Mrs Heart, you asked for advice, so here's mine: Don't get do caught up with worrying about disappointing your subscribers. You already have so many emotions to deal with as you heal from hoarding, why burden yourself with more? This journey is yours, not ours. We're just here for the ride and to root you on :)
May God bless your family this holiday season.

Do the xmas stuff in three cycles. This month is the pre declutter. Then as you utilize each catagory, (like outside deco) it becomes more clear that you will have things you did not use so you will get rid of the remainders. The last cycle will be when you put everything away, you will get rid of the stuff that did not survive the season and you wont be able to use next year. Good luck!

It could be fun to invite friends over one day and make a gift wrapping station. Like, setting up a table with the wrapping paper and other items that you choose to let go of and letting them use what they want :). And maybe to save energy, you can put out the Christmas stuff you keep right then instead of packing them away again and bringing them back out when it gets closer to Christmas.

Maybe make a bin with sentimentel christmas. Like ornaments and things you don't put up because you grow over it But still love and .feelheartstring if you would trow it away. This way you can grab the box and live the memories. But only one bin haha.

    • @goldfishsnake

I love that idea of a "sentimental bank" and giving yourself ONE bin of "deferred decisions for my sanity" - guilt-free, you can just stash the items that are really hard there, and then look at it again at the very end of the process

  • @goldfishsnake
    @goldfishsnake 3 года назад +13

I thought it was really interesting to see where you started (I love Christmas, the feeling of it, the meaning!) and then when you saw all the stuff you actually felt bad, anxious, not Christmas spirit at all! I think that's really important to sit with-you love the feelings, memories, moment with loved ones, and the stuff is none of those things, and actually removes those good feelings.
Reminder to look around the house this week for any extra Christmas stashes-Christmas clothing in the clothes bins, holiday crafts in the craft bins, wrapping stuff with gift wrap storage, and outdoor decor in the shed, that way you can consider as much like with like as possible!
Gift wrap might be a nice contained video, you could find your other gift wrap bins and look at everything together, and then sell excess tissue paper, ribbon, bows, etc. Not sure how you feel, but I thought it might be a less emotional category, too, so perhaps an easier place to start. It might be nice to store all gift wrap together, regardless of season, and in the future if you ever do run out, I like to buy "neutral" gift wrap that can be used all year round, so I don't have to store as much.
An idea to consider is storing all outdoor decor in the shed in the future too!

  • @KaylaMalmgren
    @KaylaMalmgren 3 года назад +9

I JUST watched another RUclipsr going through her Christmas supplies (Natalie Bennett). She already is a minimalist, but that is not the point. One thing she did before starting was to make a list of the items that she felt attached to and that she knew she wanted to keep without even looking in the bins.
If you find something you haven't thought of in years, do you really need to keep it? Some items have sentimental value, or they fit into the aesthtic of your home and you want to keep them and that is awesome! Just remember that if you forgot about it, ask yourself why.
She also mentioned that if you have to think about where to put something, its probably an extra. Take the time to consider what is your favorite and what you are keeping just because.
I hope this helps a little bit on your journey.
Ps there is nothing wrong with keeping items that are sentimental, but ask yourself what about it is sentimental and why you want to keep it. Would a photo capture the same feelings? Or a diary entry?

It might also be a good idea to reevaluate after you decorated for Christmas this year. Once you are done, you should be able to say what you did and did not use. The things you are not using for decoration might be also something to let go of as you probably do not need boxes and boxes of spare decorations.

AWSOME job, Ms. Heart! 👏👏👏Bravo to you for getting started - the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. And another bravo for sticking with it when it felt overwhelming. I have a suggestion. Find the decorations you use each year (I presume you put put some items year after year). Put them out around your house - yes, you’ll be decorating for Christmas insanely early, but you’ll get to enjoy it longer🎄(although you may have to dust it before you put it away in January). Then go through the rest asking yourself, ‘Do I want to have to deal with this next year if I don’t love it enough to decorate with it this year?’. Because that giant pile of Christmas stuff is not bringing you joy! Someone suggested having a ‘sentimental’ tub for decorations you no longer use but can’t bear to part with - excellent idea. And Ms. Heart, you could NEVER let us down. We’re so proud of all you’ve accomplished - we’d understand if you shoved it all back in the crawl space and concentrated on your son’s room! Who among us hasn’t been overwhelmed by a big decluttering job? (My hand is raised 🤚😁).

I love your confidence and the promise you’re making to not buy much but try to utilize what you have. You are doing the right thing taking the time to organize your sections. Such an important step! I think you should start with the miscellaneous section and sort everything into the proper categories before trying to discard more. The miscellaneous seems to be the largest pile and I think you’ll be able to fly through the rest once you’re fully able to see and know everything you have for each category.

Ideally (and you'll know you're done decluttering the Christmas Cave when) you will see the crawlspace completely emptied out once a year when you decorate for Christmas.
Don't be embarrassed! You are mid process. I like how you found your footing with a little break. I also like that you broke up the larger category into smaller ones so you could see everything you have in that category. Very nice!
You did super good today! So much sweat equity! Way to go! And your decisions came so quickly, because you know exactly what you need for outside decorations.
Consideration for interior decorations: You will still need work space. What you don't use this year to decorate, consider selling for savings/gifts/wants/needs, etc.

you mentioned that your xmas cave is never empty. i feel like a good goal would be that that the cave is empty of decorations at xmas. so that your house can be beautyful and festive but also you dont get overwelmd every year figuring out which tub your favorit things are in.
another thing maybe worth looking into, schools often dont have a budget for things like xmas decorations. so maybe you can donate things, that you are giving away to a school where kids/teens can enjoy them.

This is a great opportunity for love over like! I bet you can find enough stuff you love to decorate the entire house without having to settle for just "like", so those can go right out!

You decluttered like an EXPERT today!!!!! 💯💯💯 Putting it all together, grouping like with like, picking your favourites between similar items, keeping an amount your actually can use for the one house you have! I'm blown away!!!
My suggestions: keep the idea at the front of your mind that you only have one hous, and you only have so much time and energy. If 50 things being you lots of Christmas cheer, 500 don't bring you ten times more. 😊
This is the time for sentimental items to SHINE! 💗💗💗 The holidays are all about feelings. Get those sentimental things in places of honour and clear out the rest that's blocking their joy. 💗 🥀 🌹 Like wedding a garden so the flowers can breathe better!
Keep up the great work! 🌟

I love Christmas also and let a lot go over the past couple of years. I couldn’t imagine how overwhelming it was to look at all of it then categorize it! I think you should do the miscellaneous first even if it takes a couple of videos so that they can be put into their categories, plus I love the idea of seeing what you will be making everyone for Christmas since you seem to be super crafty!

Don't think about your subscribers feelings, just go for it in your own pace. It will be fine, you will find both sentimental things and stuff you barely remember. You are doing great! It is ok if it's not ready at the end of November, you can always continue to do the Konmari in December when it is time to decorate the house. You can start to decorate early with lights/lamps, things that are more Winter than Christmas. Is is soooo dark here in Sweden, so I think I should get more "Winter lights" as well. Lots of love and good luck with the rest of the series!

Great first step by putting stuff into smaller categories for yourself. Next video start with your miscellaneous pile and separate it all out into your categories. If you just tackle the misc pile and the Christmas wrapping paper next episode that would be enough. Whether you get rid of everything or nothing from the misc pile doesn’t matter, the point is to have all of your similar items together. You want to see how many living room thins you have and what can and will realistically fit there. Also don’t forget to add the other Christmas boxes you’ve found/ put in your regular basement clean out sections. You may also want to have the operation Christmas child, sharing table, and “future gifts” bins nearby to throw stuff in as you come across appropriate items.

  • @texadianstitcher
    @texadianstitcher 3 года назад +8

Good job with your general categories.
I might start with your miscellaneous section first and put the items into their "home" category (or toss if its empty boxes, broken or you know its not something you want), then work through the categories once like is fully with like.
I've got about 12 tubs of Christmas...BUT! we keep the original boxes things came in due to a lot of fragile stuff. If that box kept things safe being shipped around the country, it'll keep it safe during transport back into storage, or if we move (again).
So those 12 totes are lights, decor, everything except the tree. And we have paired it down over the years. If we didn't keep the packaging for some items, it probably would be closer to 7-8 totes.

I was struck when at the beginning of the video you talked about how much you loved Christmas, that you loved the feeling, spirit, joy, goodwill and how that makes you happy.
None of that relates to the decorations you have, it is all about the feelings you share with your family
I hope you will find it easier as you sort through that mountain of decorations to reflect on this. Removing all these items that no longer bring joy will not lessen your Christmas in any way, because what you care about is family, friends and sharing that time with them
I am in no way a hoarder, but I would have felt overwhelmed with that amount of stuff to sort through too. I think you were very wise in taking the break when you did to reset.
Perhaps the feeling of being overwhelmed is more related to not feeling confident that you can deal with all of the things, a fear of failure or letting yourself/others down, as lately you have appeared to be less attached emotionally to all of the items. After your break you seemed so much more confident and sure of yourself and just tackled the first section. Be proud of what you achieved, a fantastic start :)

I organized my Xmas stuff by room or category too a couple of yrs ago, it has helped quite a bit. Sometimes when I declutter I use the halfies method, if I have 2 bins of decor for a room I try to reduce it to one bin and so on! Or if I have 6 wreaths I try to only keep 3 wreaths etc. Great idea to declutter by catergory!

Somehow missed all these recent videos, watching this to help stop me buying a load of new stuff in IKEA! Christmas is the one thing where I don’t have too much stashed away, but this year I’ve ended up buying things to decorate with to help distract me from everything going on, never a good thing!
This sounds like a great way to organise it all and break it down into smaller chunks. Maybe have a look again when you’re putting stuff up or putting it away and see what isn’t used and work out what you want to keep. It can be hard with Christmas stuff as it’s a time full of so many memories and I’ll be watching and cheering you on as I catch up with them. Don’t worry about disappointing subscribers, you’ve come so far since you started it’s great to see.

Also I feel like you should maybe (if it's possible with your schedule) make sure to put alle the FB Marketplace things up there immediatly after the declutter and only then put them in the box. I can imagine how much you're going to want to sell and to do that in one big bunch seems very daunting to me.

I love decluttering and that pile is definitely overwhelming! It's also a little thrilling; think about how much space and freedom you're going to win back after this!
I have two suggestions to share.
    1. For your 'miscellaneous' category:
I had a quick google of the term 'Christmas decoration categories' and it came up with some ways you could break down your overwhelming pile. I'd have a search yourself for whatever words jump out at you as you scroll past the search results, if you're struggling find a place to start. Even if the categories are just to break the ice and you find yourself changing or making your own groupings, it's something that could give you that first move.
    2. For when you have to move lots of boxes:
Having a dad who works in safety, he made me very aware of being careful while carrying heavy/large things 😅. For these projects, would you consider investing in a hand trolley? Most of them are fairly cheap and you can wheel your stacks around without risking or straining your back. There are some heavy duty ones and there are some light weight fold-up ones on the market. I bought one when I moved house and it has been a saving grace for every move since!
Please look after yourself, take your time and have a wonderful pre-Christmas ❤️

I get second hand overwhelmed right along with you when I see the abundance of stuff. I say start simple a box at a time if it's too much for you to handle. Also, don't worry about us take care of yourself first. That is what this is all about.
Please don't buy giftwrap or decorations if you feel the temptation just think back on how overwhelmed you felt that should put the breaks on impulsive shopping.

Nov is the perfect time to declutter Christmas. As I have stated before, I declutter/organize for a living.
I found the easiest way to deal with "hoarders" (even recovering ones..LOL)
Is to use the items. For instance. Go decorate outside...then you know what you are using and what can go. Then decorate your living room and let go of what is not being used and so on. Doing each category individually as you do that particular area. Saving the tree, of course, for last. Once all the decor is up and dealt with, now you have the room down there to spread out your gift wrapping to go through
    YOU GOT THIS
