- AMPK PATHWAY ACTIVATION: In this video, we’ll be covering AMP-Activated Protein Kinase, and how to activate AMPK. We’ll also discuss what it is, what the benefits of AMPK are, how it impacts aging, and actions you can take to boost your AMPK activation.
AMPK pathway activation is one of the most important actions that you can take to slow down, stop or even reverse the effects of cellular aging. In this video, we’ll start of by examining what the AMPK pathway is and how it’s related to ATP, it’s effects, particularly on aging, and how it goes into decline with aging. Then we’ll talk about things that you can do, right now, to activate your AMPK pathway and slow down the aging process…things like exercise and supplementation.

Fasting can also activate AMPK. Many people like fasting better than low-calorie diets, for example. And I think it’s better form of calorie restriction. Also, apple cider vinegar, as I know, activates AMPK. It helps me to reduce hunger and fast longer.
Not only AMPK, but also autophagy. We should all fast more.
Agree with ACV, it decreases AMPK In the brain which reduces hunger and it increases AMPK IN the body.
Fasting breakfast raises blood glucose and that scared me so I’m trying to fast dinner instead

Hi I had a stroke in may and I am on Metformin and levothyroxine Now I'm 15 kgs lighter , thanks for the video
Really good video Lance! This was great rewatch!
I like the technical level. It’s helpful to build understanding and to stretch one’s mine to learn new concepts.
Good stuff. I have type 2 and stage 3a liver disease. I also have high blood pressure and cholesterol controlled all controlled by meds. I recently started taking deep cell activation by Nicific. I am losing weight. Yes I’m taking Metphormen.
Technical information is part of the story. I consider it necessary for a better understanding. I have learned a lot listening to you.
Thanks a lot
Thanks, appreciate the feedback.
You are an incredible teacher, Lance. Thumb up!
I appreciate that!
The supplement Berberine is thought to be a good substitute for Metformin. No Rx required and no GI side effects.
Right you are! I'm going to be doing a video on Metformin vs. Berberine in the next month or so.
I am Metformin how has it helped you ??
@@LanceHitchings sir still waiting for the video
@@LanceHitchings yes!
Your channel is one of the best I've ever seen on what you do. I'm a scientist who plays the interface between science and the public. Great job!

Great Video Lance! Thanks for sharing your research.
Not a problem. That's why I started this channel, to share my research. This is stuff I fell every guy should know.
Wow it’s the best Video to understand complete MOA of AMPK thanks for sharing.
Glad it was helpful!
Great content Lance, informative and straight to the point.
Thanks.
So AMPK activation is the fountain of youth. Thanks I needed that. Great information. Thanks for sharing 👍🏿
It's not the fountain of youth, but it helps.
Well said. AMPK activation and controlling senescence is the way!
Glad you liked it.
Great series
Thank you for this great video !
Glad you liked it!
Excellent content thank you for sharing a very detailed presentation

Can you do a video on trimethylglycine? And how it effects the supplementation of NR? I'm really curious! Thanks for what you do! Your videos are very informative!!
Perfect explanation for me! Thank you.
One question, does Berberine do that also. I know they use it for glucose control, do you think it’s the same mechanism of action?
ATP to AMP + energy, I understand now. Thanks Lance
Glad to help!
Excellent lecture
awesome! You are my new mentor.
Wow, thanks!
Thanks so much! So clear. What time of day is best to take the regimen discussed?
The content is super scientific-based. Great video, you can really tell this guy knows what he's talking about.
Thanks! I really appreciate it.

I'm a master student in Bioenergetics, and this video had an amazing level of scientific information and simple to understand! Great job!
Thanks, love to hear it when someone who's informed likes my videos.
berberine would be better than metformin woukdnt it? Has Hi dose vitamin use been studied as an anti aging protocol? Vit D, C, E. in particular, also the carrotines, Astaxanthin, etc, thanks for the video, keep up the good work.
would like some info on ampk and als thanks
Excellent information. Please mention the dose of medicines you are taking to activate ampk pathway.
Here's the thing. Everyone is different, what works for me might not work for you, or might work but at a different dose. Plus, I'm constantly tweaking my supplements, try more of less of them, eliminating some, adding others...it's a moving target. My suggestion is that you experiment on yourself to find which ones work for you, and in what doses.
Great content as always, but if you could care to share the dosage of the supplements you mentioned to be taking
I've tried replying to your question on two separate occasions, but RUclips has taken both replies down. I think it went over the character count limit for comments. I'm not ignoring you. So...I guess I'll have to do a video on my personal dosages in the near future.
I found this video interesting. However I just read an article in Nature magazine that stated Metformin inhibits complex 1 and decreases ATP
Thanks!
You bet!
Hi Lance, great video. Wanted to ask what do you think of AMPK activation supplements such as Active-Pk?
Interesting question. First off, if it works for you and you can afford it, then I'm all in favor of it. For me, I tend not to prefer proprietary formulations, they tend to be really expensive and they may or may not have everything I need. Plus, a lot of the supplements that I take perform several different functions. So I may already be taking that supplement in another form. Taking proprietary formulation can cause one to accidentally overdose with some supplements, unless you're really good and persistent with reading labels.
thankyou
You're welcome!
Hi Lance, not sure if you'll be able too see this, but I got a quick question - I've read that Autophagy is triggered by ROS(Reactive Oxygen Species) & RNS(Reactive Nitrogen Species), meaning the mitochondria has to experience oxidative stress for autophagy to occur.
Most of the supplements you recommend are powerful antioxidants; will they override the oxidation process required for autophagy? Will AMPK override those requirement?
I have been following a very loose OMAD fast for about 5 years. Ramping it up to subtract antioxidants will restrict my intake allowance to water, salt, creatine, and Ritalin in between.
This is not even close to my spheres, so I don't know what I don't know...
Any more updates? Hope to see you back soon.
I'll be posting every other week, for a while.
How about Apple cider vinegar at activating AMPK?
Thoughts on plasma dilution?
ya bro add more technical stuff. and i like this background
Lance would appreciate any solutions to ""premature ejaculation" can't seem to find a successful one
any where ! thank you
Gynostemma pentaphyllum also activates AMPK substantially.
What about visual activation when teaching?
Rapamicina or metfomina wichone is better
I hope AMPK supplementation can help me drop body fat. just started today.
I think it should help, but I use AMPK activation primarily for it's anti-aging effects. Pesonally, I think doing HIIT is the best way to activate AMPK, although supplementation can certainly help.
@@LanceHitchings so it’s a yr later. Did it help?
Did it help? It a yr later
Great information. I'm look for a more structured way to cycle ampk and mtor. Should it be 50/50? How long in each pathway? Should it be 1 day of one and the next the other?
Great questions. I'm still trying to figure it out.
The days I weight train/strength train I cycle MTOR. Days I cardio train and higher calorie burn days is when I cycle AMPK. If I’m focusing on weight loss I try a 4/2 split on cardio to strength training while using a calorie deficit, as retaining muscle mass is actually important for mitochondrial health, density, and function. If I’m focusing on mass gain then a 4/2 split on strength to cardio training with a 35-50 calorie surplus. Personally how I’ve been programming my workouts.
@@chadboy1515 thank you. That's helpful.
Please tell me what should be the dose of metformin for autophagy or slow aging?
I've done several videos on autophagy and metformin. Look them up and watch them.
Dr. David Sinclair is a professor at Harvard Medical School. Not sure he ever taught at Yale.
Please tell me te diferencie of using metformina ir using rapamina
Metformin, along with berberine, is used to help control blood sugar levels. Rapamycin is used to suppress the mTOR pathway, which is an anabolic pathway used to build new tissues. So, they each do totally separate things.
What's your opinion of Berberine, Quercitin, and Gynostemma in the stimulation and/or production of AMPK and the foods, if available, that may have one or more of these elements?
I'm not familiar with gynostemma. I think berberine and quercitin both help with AMPK, although I think that fasting and exercise are better. I also feel that most foods don't contain a therapeutic dose of either.
Do you take ALA-R or the non R? Do you think there is a rel difference in the way the body accepts the Right Hand (R) version of ALA compared to the synthetic non R version?
Great question. And the answer is..."I don't know." My gut reaction is that there is probably no difference, but I'm not a scientist, so you shouldn't take my answer for anything other than an unschooled opinion. But I'll do some research and get back to you.
Great information, thank you!
What should we take for ampk activator? Berberine or metformin?
Great question, it depends. Everyone reacts differently to different supplements and medications. I'm currently taking berberine, but I'm thinking about going back to metformin, or I might try both. But thats me, you'll have to work out what's best for you.
the sound was very "gravelly" - hard to listen/respet the info when the sound quality didn't appear healthy.
How about CoQ10 , Glycine betaine and Apigenin, flavonoid 4,4′-dimethoxychalcone? I heard that they can activate the AMPK too. Can they?
That's a great question. I haven't heard that before, but that just means that I need to do some more research. I'll have to get back to you on that.
I posted the article as below that may help you on your research.
Common AMPK Activators and Applicable Population
AMPK activators widely exist in plants. Different AMPK activators have different activation modes and characteristics. Many netizens asked me what kind of AMPK activator we should take. I sorted out some commonly used AMPK activator, and you can choose the right activator according to your needs.
Apigenin
Activation mode: CAMKK
Best Source: Celery Seeds
Characteristics: in animal experiments, it has strong anti-tumor effect, inhibits the secretion of testosterone, inhibits monoamine oxidase, inhibits CD38, and has good antihypertensive effect.
Applicable population: three high population, cancer patients, middle-aged and elderly population, androgen excessive, acne (whelk) patients, hirsutism patients, depression patients, benign prostatic hyperplasia patients
Not applicable to the population: young men and women with low androgen, pregnant women are not suitable (in large quantities, it has adverse effects on reproductive function, so it is not suitable for young people with reproductive needs),people with poor liver function should not take too much apigenin .
Betaine(TMG)
Activation mode: LKB1
Best Source: beet Root, lycium barbarum
Characteristics: inherent substance in human body, activating AMPK and being methyl donors can improve the level of growth hormone in vivo, make up for the methyl deficiency caused by NAM, promote the transformation of NADH into NAD+, and enhance the antioxidant capacity.
Applicable population: standard accessories for taking NAD + precursor , for all ages, especially for person who want to loss weight and who like sports.
Not applicable to the population:sugar content of beet root is high. Diabetics are cautious about eating beet root. The beet root contains nitrate, nitrate may causes renal calculus in people with poor kidney function.
Metformine
Activation Mode: inhibiting mitochondrial respiratory chain to reduce ATP
Best Source: drugs
Characteristic: more research, widely used
Applicable population: adults with little exercise.
Not applicable to the population: children, exercise fitness people (ATP reduction may affect ability of sport and growth, so it is not suitable for adults and children who often exercise, metformine can take at night for anti-aging), people with kidney function problems.
4,4'-dimethoxychalcone
Activation mode: LKB1
Best Source: ashitaba
Characteristic: it shows strong longevity-prolonging effect in animal experiments.
Applicable population: adults
Not applicable to the population: ashitabas contain coumarin, which may be photosensitive and not suitable for beauty lovers to take during the day.
(Because it is a flavonoid, it may have the function of plant estrogen. It is not suitable for pregnant women and men to use it more often.)
Coenzyme Q10
Activation mode: CAMKK
Best Source: drugs/dietary supplements
Characteristic: inherent substance in human body, participating in tricarboxylic acid cycle, accelerating ATP production, more research, widely used
Applicable population: for all ages
Not applicable to the population: none
Resveratrol
Activation mode: LKB1 / Inhibits ATP synthase to reduce ATP
Best Source: grape Seeds/dietary supplements
Characteristic: great controversy
Applicable population: adults
Not applicable to the population: children, exercise fitness, kidney dysfunction (ATP reduction may affect ability of sport and growth, so it is not suitable for adults and children who often exercise, if anti-aging, you can take it at night)
Astaxanthin
Activation mode: AMPK is activated by adiponectin
Best source: Haematococcus pluvialis
Characteristic: it has strong antioxidant effect and shows strong antineoplastic and longevity-prolonging effects in animal experiments.
Applicable population: for all ages
Uncomfortable group: none
Salicin
Activation mode: direct activation
Characteristic: strong anti-inflammatory ability
Applicable population: for all ages
Not applicable to the population: none
PQQ
Activation mode: unknow
Characteristic: inherent substance in human body, famous for improve mitochondrial function and ability of antioxidant
Applicable population: for all ages
Not applicable to the population: none
Sulforaphane
Activation mode: LKB1
Best source: broccoli
Characteristic: famous for ability of anticancer and antioxidant.
Applicable population: for all ages
Not applicable to the population: none
This an amazing list that will take quite a bit of study to determine the best course of action.
@@TaxLien wow, thanks.
Please , write the drugs for me which you are taking. Thanks
They're constantly changing and are based on numerous tests of aging biomarkers and monitoring with devices that I have done. What's right for me would be suitable for anyone else.
Is there a way to measure your NAD or AMPK?
Not that I know of, but that means nothing. There probably is, given that they seem to measure levels of the stuff in studies, but I don't know how they accomplish that. I don't know if it's a direct measurement or the result of indirect evidence.
Nice to watch a talk about anti aging-supplements without going down the nicotinamide, NAD rabbit hole and all of the associated expensive designer molecules.... as far as Metformin, I noticed that people who are fans of it are already in the medical field, or laboratory-types, but for a lot of people, if there's a natural alternative to a synthetic Rx drug, that would be preferable. Did you intentionally omit resveratrol or (possibly) even better, pterostilbene as better alternatives to Metformin?
I tend to thing of resveratrol and pterostilbene as senolytics, but you're right, they do have an advantage for the AMPK pathway.
@@LanceHitchings Thanks again for your well-researched and science-based approach, super interesting stuff!
I use nicatinamide riboside. Are you saying I shouldnt??
@@lindawick455 I don't see a downside to it other than the cost. Best in-depth discussion about that here: ruclips.net/video/lv7ihoY8XyA/видео.html
low carb high fat diet also activates AMPK.
Are you aware of any studies that back this up? All the data that I've been able to find indicates that a high fat diet suppresses AMPK. I'd be interested in reading a study that contradicts this.
Search in google scholar for low carb diet and AMPK.

Which is the best activator?
Honestly, fasting and exercise.
There is a lot of rather impressive comments here. Sort of makes me a bit shy on my small addition. Apparently Metformin lowers cholesterol. If you or anyone has high cholesterol you might ask your doctor to prescribe Metformin instead of statin drugs like Lipitor.
Don't be shy...we're all here to contribute and establish a community. I did not know that about Metformin, great to know...and thank you for your contribution.
What about using rapamycin
Not a big fan of rapamycin. I'm posting a video later this month or early next month in which I go into detail, but in a nutshell, it has too long a half life in humans for one, and I'm not convinced that we need to shut down mTOR all the time. I think mTOR is just as critical to healthy aging as AMPK.
Instead of taking all those different sipplements. Is there one supplement thay can cover for all of those??
Nope, and I don't think there ever will be. Because of the different eating requirements for the different supplements.
Don’t dumb it down keep it gangsta. This info wouldn’t be watered down I like the insight. You don’t look a day over 52. I’ll need to see some ID
Thanks, I'll try to keep it real. It's good to know that some people like the technical detail.
How long( Hours ) I should fast to Activate AMPK , Autophagy....?
Thanx from India 🇮🇳
If I gave the impression that fasting activates AMPK, I apologize. While "calorie restriction" is a method that has been shown to activate AMPK, it's not a fast. It's consistently eating less than the body requires...day after day after day. A LOT less. To be honest, I don't know how much, but everything that I've read about it suggests that it's less than can be sustained.
In my opinion, there are better ways to activate AMPK, such as exercise, supplementation, or doing a self-hack, such as taking a medication like metformin off-label.
Music in this kind of videos is an obstacle.

Sinclair at Harvard.
best pathway to active AMPK is berberine, no side effect.
That's what I've heard, although I have no personal experience with it. Looks like I need to research it and maybe do a video.
Berberine has many receptor modifying properties, not limited to ACE, Alpha galactosidase, alpha reductase, PCSK9. It also affects coagulation by inhibiting thrombin and platelet aggregation. I had an unpleasant hemorrhagic complication relating to Berberine use. Note Omega 3 fatty acids also inhibit platelet aggregation.

Nothing against you, just a question!
Ha! Yeah, I know that I've got a rough and gravelly voice. Before I record each video, I drink a soothing concoction of honey, ginger and lemon...but it's still gravelly. Just the voice I was born with.
Make ypur videos a lot better by getting rid of that crap music. Otherwise the info you give is excellent

Your talking over my head
Your knowledge about AMPK is acceptable but use of pharmaceuticals and recommending same is unhelpful.
Just bear in mind that pharmaceuticals are bad so being blasé about stomach upset is just so wrong.
But then you are a citizen of a criminal society and system so know no better way of life.
