  • The hijab or veil has become one of the most discussed pieces of clothing in modern times. One cannot read the news without stumbling upon a story of discrimination related to what a woman was wearing at some specific time, and things seem to be getting worse.
We often judge people before we hear their stories, and this is what Sally Beydoun and Narjes Jaafar are trying to battle. Narjes, a second year medical student, and Sally, a fifth year pharmacy student, are not at TEDxLAU to present a drug that will make people less judgmental and empathize before they jump to conclusions. They are actually going to put their medical background behind and join forces to present their personal journeys with the hijab.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

lets be honest, decency has nothing to do with Hijab. in other words, hijab does not bring decency if person naturally does not possess it. As a Muslim, I have seen many girls with Hijab who have done things that cannot be done by many girls without Hijab.

This is a BEAUTIFUL presentation. I love how they juxtaposed the two opposing choices in such a respectful way via a back and forth discussion with each other. Simply lovely. We could all learn to do this more with people who differ from us. I am putting this on facebook. Thank you for sharing your perspectives.

Such a beautiful message: ACCEPT MY STORY. ACCEPT MY CHOICES. ACCEPT ME. It's the choice of an individual woman to wear or take-off hijab - no one, I mean, NO ONE should force her to do otherwise :)

I wore hijab because in my family they used to tell us that women who don't cover up will be suspended from their lashes! And they will burn in flames after death! That made me grow up with a weak personality and low self love and esteem because I wasn't convinced that I should do this or follow that and at the same time I couldn't take my own decisions ..Growing in a muslim family who doesn't understand islam as it should be understood is the worst. now I'm trying to find the path that's most real and true to myself it's not easy but I'll try

It does not matter if you wear hijab or not, just be a good person and believe in yourself, respect and love yourself.

It's a personal choice to wear it or not.

What we have to remember is that the hijab means covering, not the headscarf. I am a Muslim, but I do not wear the headscarf. Even though I don't wear the headscarf, I still dress modestly, not wearing any form of clothing that exposes too much skin. For me personally, modest dressing includes a t-shirt, up to at least elbow length, as well as knee-length trousers, skirts and dresses. As well as this, (my own choice!), I don't wear make - up or make my hair look fancy as this is something I've had no interest in whatsover and because by not wearing make up or having my hair a certain way, people don't fixate on something superficial. Instead, it is my personality and intelligence (I hope!) that seems to win people over.

She got a nice long hair... in my country, people believe hair and teeth are women’s jewellery .... so appreciate long hair a lot

Beautiful!! Thank you for expressing what closed minded people need to hear. All people should have the freedom to make any life choices that "work" for them without hurting others. And, most especially, women need to support each other's choices regarding education, marriage, child rearing, employment and reproduction. The premise of our great nation is to strive for respect and opportunity for everyone.

"I will break all the obstacles I face because just like every successful person did - hijabi or not - obstacles are there, and for me, my hijab is not an obstacle."

I'm a person by birth a Muslim. I'm not much have an in depth knowledge of the rules regarding clothing of woman. the only thing I know is women should hide her private. I give my wife the full rights to choose. How she should dress, what type she should wear are all her choices. I cannot force my wishes on her. The reason for that I respect her individuality. That applies to my kids too. Al hamdu lillh I'm satisified with what I have and Allah has given me a wonderful wife & kids

Everyday I put on my hijab I am reminded that I own myself not society. I am my own beauty and not what society decides.

I love how both women have two different view points on the topic yet both take the time to explain their views and support each other so very much throughout the speech - well done xx
