    People keep saying that the new one looks cheaper, but I agree with you - the new one simply looks like a more modern, minimalist version of luxury. It's like the difference between a traditional Rolls Royce interior and a modern S Class interior. Different design philosophies

      I personally can do with the basic thermostats that our house came with. However this weekend we accidentally broke ours sooooo while on the hunt to buy a replacement we really stopped and considered what we want from a new thermostats. For example my room has 4 vents and my sisters only has one. That means my room is either always too cold or too hot because for her it runs the opposite way around. Also in the living room upstairs I have all my exotic plants that I have been struggling with lately because everyone else is too hot so they crank up the ac so its 60 or so but those plants have to be at a constant 70. Well I was pleasantly surprise to find that there is a thermostat that can regulate each rooms temperature individually. Also I hate having the heater on during the winter, but everyone else runs too cold and set it at flipping 75-85 which means I wake up drenched. This thermostats sound like I would be able to control it directly with my phone without having to do my usual 2 am sprint across the house to lower the heat. This is on the off chance the sensors are a flop. So sure it’s not really a necessity but I like paying for comfort if life allows it.

    Ok, I had the cheaper Nest but am switching to the $250 Learning version because 1) the Nest app is much nicer to use than Google Home 2) There is no lock feature on the cheap one. 3) The expensive one will operate and recharge itself on a system without a Common wire. This last part is huge!!!! No batteries to die or replace. If you don’t have a Common wire, pay the extra. I learned this the hard way. 😢

  • @ChristopherFearon
    @ChristopherFearon 3 года назад +15

    You failed to highlight the most important difference which is that the new thermostat doesn't use AI/ML to learn your patterns and optimize you're temperature schedule/profile. Aside from aesthetics and integration into the Google Home app, as far as I can tell, the new thermostat doesn't have any more intelligence than other programmable thermostats on the market. At the end of the day, you still manually set up your own temperature schedule/profile, it's just that you do it through the Google Home app. Of course, you can control the temp remotely with the app, but does this really constitute a "smart thermostat?"

    • @SteveDOES
      @SteveDOES  3 года назад +12

      You’re right, it’s in my notes but didn’t make it in the video. :/ I wasn’t a fan of it learning my patterns. I kept getting mad at my wife to adjusting the thermostat and she said she never touched it. I found it kept adjusting to temps that I didn’t want. Guess I just wasn’t used to my thermostat “adjusting” the temp 30 minutes after I manually changed it. Haha

    I 'downgraded' from the Learning Thermostat to this new Thermostat. Installation was just as easy. Use of it remains to be seen. I hardly touch the physical thermostat, I normally do adjustments through the app or through the Nest Hub or Alexa app. I didn't realize however, that the Termostat would not be available through the Nest app and now have to go through the Google Home app. Little disappointed in that because my Nest Cameras and Protect devices are still on the Nest App. Oh well lessons learned. As far as the new Thermostat, I definitely like the cleaner look of it. I've had the Learning Thermostat since it came out and felt I needed/wanted an upgrade.

    One function I am wanting in my first Smart thermostat is complete schedule programming for the fan. With either of these thermostats - can you program the fan to run all night like 10pm - 6am regardless if the Heat/AC is needed…. And also then just go to Automatic through the day - meaning it comes on only when the Heat/AC needs to run!? I like the fan on to move air while we sleep for the noise and air movement - but do not want to waste electricity when we are not home through the day. Also with the fan - is there a “recycle” type setting - where the fan would come on periodically to move air through the house - but would not require the fan to just be on all day/schedule long? The rest of the programming I’m sure works fine - but I want to know I can program just the fan completely!? TIA!

    The plastic one is real sucks. 2 things that’s super bad:
    - unresponsive control. It so annoying when you scrolling, but it’s not.. aghh;
    - in light room, when sun on windows side, display has bad visibility, not enough brightness.
    And also 2 common issues of all nest thermostats (but I hope it will be fixed in 2024 generation):
    - battery issue. After 6+ months customers reporting about not working power ;
    - WiFi. Also, wifi module can burn out after a some months.
    You can still contact with Google and replace the device if warranty not end.
    Idk. I like learning thermostat with metal ring. Nice control and interface. But still have those 2 problems. So if you decided to buy, buy it new from manufacturer or official distributor, to have a real warranty.

THere are days that the Nest Learning does not follow the schedule and the house is cold even up to 7 am. So then I move the app to a degree higher and still the furnace does not come on. The Nest Learning has a pretty shell but it hardly stacks up as reliable. Mine died in under a year and only received the run around from Google. Save your money.

    Wilk this work with alexa? And will it work just as good if you were using google voice assistant vs alexa or they both essentially do the same job? I know this is a Google product which is why I'm curious how it will do with alexa.

    I hate the learning thermostat! It randomly turn on the heating at 3am, despite turning off learning mode and having nothing scheduled, and often doesn't turn off the heating at bedtime.
    I've reset the device, deleted it from Nest and re-added, and turned off all of the features, but it is horrendously inconsistent, and probably adds $500 a year to my heating bills when it repeatedly comes on during the night.
    And yes, True Radiant is disabled, Sunblock is off, etc. but it's as though it randomly switches to another time-zone and makes up its own schedule. Frustrating, and not a nice experience.

    I have both. The Learning Thermostat is not worth the extra cost. The only feature it has is rechargeable batteries, the rest are features I don't use or care about.

    So I can buy the new Nest Thermostat for $50 should I get it? My other option is the ECOBEE smart device on sale for $150 . Is the ECOBEE worth an additional $100? I already have a google home MINI so I have that app. I heard the ECOBEE is better than NEST but worth $100 more? Also I have a 800sq condo if that helps. Thanks for your advice!

    I prefer the Nest E compared to all of them. Nest learning was absolutely garbage always had issues with it and after 1 year the Rc terminal went bad during the coldest time of the winter. I can't stand the Nest 2020 model it's ugly, basic and don't get me started on the crappy thermostat UI for Google home but it was the only option we had.

    Great video man.. I'm definitely more informed now. How do the sensors work? Can you adjust the temperatures? I prefer my master bedroom to be warmer than my fam likes the rest of the house to be. Thanks..

    • @SteveDOES
      @SteveDOES  3 года назад +1

      Thanks. As for the sensors, you place them in rooms throughout the house. So if the thermostat is in the hallway and you have it set to 78, it will turn off the heat when the hallway gets to 78. Even if your bedroom is still 74. If you have a sensor in your bedroom you can have your thermostat base it's on/off times from that sensor instead of the sensor in the thermostat. So for example, if you set your thermostat to 78, using the bedroom sensor, the heater will stay on until your room hits that temp. Your hallway might now be 82 but the room that you want to be 78 now will be. Hope that makes sense. :)

    • @bigmike7925
      @bigmike7925 3 года назад

      @@SteveDOES it makes sense Bro.. I'm guessing that I might be forced to get the more expensive thermostat then. I have a single story house and the thermostats are about 20 feet apart. The one for the master bedroom will not shut off when the set heat temp is reached.. it gets stuck on Duncan Hines hot!! 😳 I was looking for a solution so that my bedroom temp would be where I want it and not controlled by my hallway ambient temp..

    I like my new Nest but haven't found a way to connect with google home on our pc. I can already tell it's costing less to run the ac but it's cycling on/off twice as much. This won’t dehumidify the air making it feel muggy and can also lead to more wear on the compressor .
