In this video we teach you the difference between all three Nest Thermostats. The Nest Learning Thermostat, Nest E and the Nest Thermostat. The Nest Learning Thermostat is compatible with the most types of HVAC systems and has a high end look. But for this additional compatibility it comes in at a higher price point.

I have the Nest 3rd gen learning thermostat. After 2 years the battery is too low for wi-fi connection. I have no C wire at the thermostat, so I installed a Nest power connector. That didn't work. (FWIW- there is a gray C wire at the heat pump's AHU.) So I installed a new battery (which is tricky) and that didn't work either. I like the Nest when it's working but something is amiss.
UPDATE: Had to call in an HVAC Technician. At the AHU, he removed the Nest power connector and connected the G wire to the Y wire. At the thermostat, he moved the G wire to the C connector and now I have 3.9V and Wi-Fi connection. However, if I turn on "fan only" (which I never do) the heat will come on also. No biggie, except sometimes I rent the place weekly in the summer. I'll just make a little note about that for any guests to not use...fan only. I enjoy your helpful videos, thx for doing that.

The main thing is that the nest thermostat doesn't learn. But then, I never used that feature--my schedule is pretty rigid, so there was no point. I had the nest learning thermostat in my old house, but when I moved, I got the nest thermostat. I'm at least as happy with it--I like its aesthetics better, and it was cheap. You don't need to interact with thermostats much (or at least, you shouldn't). I did have to connect the blue wire to my common at the thermostat, but that took only a few minutes and was easy. The google home app isn't as user-friendly as the nest app was, but it works well enough. And of course, the thermostat can be made part of routines and so forth. It's fine. My main complaint is that there is no way to interact with the thermostat over the web. You have to use the app. Lame.

That said, without either, it sucks batteries and you don't have access to all the features. Also, I use the Google home app for my other smart devices so I'm happy not to use another app.

In my case, I was using the Nest Thermostat (mirror version) fine with an AC only system. However when I upgraded to a Heat Pump (And Factory reset the Nest Thermostat) It wouldn't work without a common wire. I had to run a new set of thermostat wires to fix the problem.
People should know how devices are out of the box, not how some update would maybe end up being.

These devices are sent to stores, and continuous updates are rolled out once they're in the hands of consumers. It's essential for us as consumers to stay informed and check for updates when unboxing our devices. Remarkably, these updates often enhance the device's performance significantly, eliminating the need for additional hardware to achieve optimal functionality. I just removed it from the wall and am going to Best Buy to return it and get a new one. I already talked to Google and they said the device was faulty and since it was under warranty, they’d send a new one; I don’t want to wait and have a 2 year extended warranty with Best Buy, so to Best Buy I go!

I prefer the Nest E compared to all of them never had a single issue with it, but they don't sell it in stores anymore had it 4 years until lightning hit our house and destroyed it, it's by far the superior version. Nest learning was absolutely garbage always had issues with it as it would change the temperature by itself, tried adding a common wire since this version has a common known issue where it loses power in cold weather but the common wire didn't fix it and turns out after 1 year the Rc terminal went bad during the coldest time of the winter causing our furnace to short cycle $230 down the drain. I can't stand the Nest 2020 model (current install now) it's ugly, basic and don't get me started on the crappy thermostat UI for Google home since this is the first thermostat that DOES NOT allow the useage of the Nest App but it was the only option we had.

what they fail to tell you is that the thermostat has a mode called Nest PRO, exclusively for licensed HVAC contractors that allows them to access advanced features that the regular home owner is excluded from. if i pay all that money for one of these, im not going to be excluded from setting up the thermostat to my preferred mode of operation. makes this thermostat a BIG waste of money.

I have the newest cheapest nest one...but my ac turns off and on every minute...then runs for 2 minutes...then off for a minute.. and so on...so I just purchased the Learning nest thermostat...hoping it's smarter or something...cuz I've already called several companies out..they say my system is fine that it's the nest thermostat....the one on the far right

I have a new one on the right, those things will destroy your compressor with all the short cycling, no temperature overlap. Poor engineer, high amps draw at startup and increase wear on the compressor.
      Most any tstat is better.

Can't figure why my heat pump is not compatible with my nest thermostat

  • @AntonioCunningham

Looks like I was too late.
While I liked the Learning Thermostat, the cost was too much. So I was left with the mirror Nest or the Nest E... And well considering I hate the way the Nest E looks, I defaulted to the Morror Nest.
While this worked great for my AC only system, it became a nightmare when I swiched over to a heat pump. (AC compressor died and I had no other way to heat the house besided space heaters)
I had to rerun all thermerstat wires to make this work. (I didn't have a common wire)
I probably should have saved up and waited for a sale on the Learning thermostat.

As an HVAC professional for 39 years, Nest and Echobee are DIY consumer junk. Look at a Honeywell Th8300 series. The setup inputs are many to fine tune to the exact installation requirements. We have replaced most of those two stats when called out for service be because they are the cause of the system not performing as designed and expected.

I love the nest thermostat, but not a huge fan of the google. While the google one works fine, the nest feels qaulity and refined. Google really took a big dookie on nest and essentially killed it off for googles big gain. Now all the products are terrible, from the doorbells, cameras etc. Only thing that was cool was the max hub. But then I noticed google does not pair well with homekit (without a mod) and other apple/amazon devices. Pass

#1 reason not to buy Nest! I had mine for 6 months before the thermostat started overheating and reading an inside temperature of 89 degrees. Called the warranty department. On the phone for an hour while they did several tests to say nothing was wrong with it and it will go back to normal. Never did. Called them again the next day and said I need a new one. They said “ we will send you one but you have to pay $270.00 for them to hold until they get the old one back. I paid $190 originally for it. I said they can go to hell and threw toe junk in the trash and ordered a different brand.
