It remains to be seen how well the AI Integration into the Nest works and how adaptable it really is. Simply identifying a pattern of users switching temperature to 68 in summer (when it is 80+ outside for several weeks and folks are at home on weekend/Saturday) and then suggesting to switch to 68 (when it is now fall and outside temperature is a more comfortable 74 on weekends) might not be what all users might want? In short, is it simple pattern recognition or is the AI actually taking into consideration other weather related parameters/comfort factors. As for the streamer CPU speed boost, Google seems to prioritize "planned obsolescence" - e.g. considering the upgrade roadmap for Google TV, this streamer should be viable for 'x years' down the road beyond which their devices become slow and unusable?
If Google wants any feedback, I hope you let them know that enthusiasts don't trust them not to kill an ecosystem anymore. They're always abandoning products and killing the cloud servers.
Google really missed the boat on the streamer. So much potential to release a superior option to the Shield and Apple TV and they release something that's barely an upgrade over the 4 year old Chromecast for double the price...
Huge miss not putting the latest S905X5 chipset in the streamer to bring it up to par with those other devices you mentioned, apparently it’s only using the same chipset as the 2021 Fire Stick Max so already obsolete, looked so promising with more storage, RAM & HDMI 2.1
I left an apartment a couple years back that had a smart thermostat and it was life changing. Not having a major house feature appliance end up in the google graveyard is a plus. Just put Matter on every google device from here on out...
And yeah, Streamer is a terrible name. Chromecast "Anything" woulda been better. However, it's *lack* of power and features may justify the name... it just streams stuff, nothing done well natively.
i always had trouble with nest and my trane system with nest not turning on my aux heat in the winter time... switched to ecobee and no problems since, except for getting rid of developer keys.
As pretty and compelling as it is - I think I'm going to look at some other options when I upgrade. Google burned that bridge and I'm not wanting to take any additional chances with my home automation components.
Back in the day I've had a Nest doorbell. The app never knew if I was home or not. No problem for the doorbell. But I didn't dare to buy the thermostat. Bought a Tado.
Made the mistake of a Nest Doorbell and Thermostat combo, on top of the thermostat needing a paid API, it refuses to turn on the heat while hard-wired if the backup battery is not in place (why? It has the C Wire...). The doorbell apparently only uses the hard-wired connection to charge, but can't operate at the same time. The battery is prone to overheating (in the bay area winter of all places), which results in the device being offline often unless it is set to potato quality and short and useless event times.
@@TechDogeth my nest works perfectly and will upgrade to the latest one. I can’t relate to having no power and the battery overheating bc it never does.
The annoying thing with smart thermostats is not understanding comfort is a combination of humidity and temperature. I have as much confidence that AI solves this the way google thinks their updated streamer is a game changer. If it ever gets hot/uncomfortable, I just set the temperature 2 degrees lower, not set a specific temperature for the house; Big Consumer Tech seems not not understand this lol
Think the old thermostat had thread but not open-thread to communicate with nest protects. I’d be willing to bet this one has thread but not open-thread too. Loads of stuff was USA only in the old Nest range. I wonder which stuff will make it across to Europe.
I had a Google nest and it was so invasive I switched it out got the Honeywell T5 smart thermostat. Sorry Google I don't want to hand over total control to you.
Does it work with modulating, high-efficiency furnaces yet though? Being stuck with Lennox’s medieval thermostat sucks but it’s the only thermostat that works with a modulating furnace!
Sounds like a fun trip! I’m excited to see what people think when they’ve had a chance to use them longer. I’m still team ecobee since the sensors do occupancy detection and averaging
The way it powers itself w/o a C wire burned out our circuit board on our old HVAC. Given it got power by rapidly turning the system on and off, it broke that aspect of the board. Replacement board lasted long enough for us to replace all our HVAC and install a C wire but had to use Lennox's thermostat as Nest couldn't do the variable speed features.
@@cyprianskiba8768 It is the wire that provides constant power. Many older installs didn't include that (and other) wire. Basic thermostats didn't/don't need power and ones with LCD screens would use replaceable batteries. Without a C wire Nest gets power by turning the HVAC on and off rapidly for fractions of a second, a time so short that it gets bits of power but it isn't long enough for the system to start spinning up.
@@cyprianskiba8768 It provides voltage to the thermostat from your HVAC system so as long as your HVAC has power/is on, your thermostat can get power from it.
It's disappointing but not surprising to hear they are discontinuing the Chromecast when the new Streamer comes out. People like things hidden, so they make something that needs to be out in the open, and ditch the thing that can be hidden. They should keep both products on the shelf but google probably know that if they did, most people wouldn't buy the streamer.
I had a Nest and I loved it. When I moved to my new house, it didn’t work with my HVAC system. I can’t remember why it didn’t work. I have an Echobee and it is ok.
I think the Ethernet port on the streamer is a good idea, but it has followed the usual Google upgrade path where it is an incremental upgrade rather than a major upgrade. I do like the new features of the new Nest Thermostat, but I don't think it's worth the upgrade over the previous model just yet. Improvements for sure, but like the streamer, it is more incremental than a major update.
Glad that you touched on the new chromecast. The current one is so sluggish, I’m dubious than 22% faster is anywhere near enough for current expectation. Now that device is suppose to last us years .. But yeah having a dongle these days is a hard question outside for few specific use case (ie moonshine) and they’re not making the software experience any better than tv.
