The satisfaction I get knowing I'm the one who mixed and mastered my own song is unmatched. It may not be the best nor perfect but still satisfying. But I guess the task of mixing isn't for everybody so I can see why people would use AI for it.
Same here. i agree with you and @dylan johnson. i enjoy mixing and mastering quite a bit. i also don't get the whole "it's magic" attitude towards mixing and mastering, it's a bit of science and a bit of art but it's definitely not neurosurgery in outer space level stuff. not saying it's easy either, but i like doing it.
A.I. isn't there to do the work for you though. You could do that... you could do a lot of stuff. Like reuse drum patterns everyone uses since forever because we're not drummers... right? But A.I. is meant to guide you, point you in the right direction based on the input you give it. The genre makes or breaks a song in the studio based on the information given on the song's genre. That's exactly how A.I. mixes and masters. When mastering with an A.I. simply changing the song's GENRE, I've seen first-hand, it changes the song completely [of course using all sorts of analogue emulation is the main culprit here]. I think, the primary thing A.I. actually does is gain stage, leveling, and fitting everything neatly in their own pockets. That's all. Man is limited by our hearing and equipment. A.I. fixes this problem. It won't make a song for you or cheat your mix to sound fancy. That's the wrong notion.
I see you're EQ-ing first, then applying track dynamics. I did that too when I started out with mixing, and I ran into the same trouble as you did - when it sounds good, and then you put dynamics on it, it sounds different. That's why I changed my mixing workflow. I will now only filter out some annoying frequencies as the first step, to have control over what goes into the dynamics, e.g. get rid of thumping lows or resonances and ringing. Then I'll control the track dynamics, and finally when the signals are "stable", I'll EQ them creatively to fit into rest of the mix. Filter First, Dynamics Dva, EQ Eventually, Limiter Last. (Concluding clipping casually optional.)

Kind of like vocalign or superior drummer but all about simplicity and AI mixing for demo purposes or a quick production.
Sounds cool. I don't get all the hate towards an all in one solution. "Well it's not like they did it back in the day when it was superior." It's like what do you think a mixing console was designed for...
I can envision tools like this being part of the stock plugins in Ableton and FL Studio in the not too distant future. Getting AI into the popular DAWs by default seems a logical step.
I do believe you are supposed to be (or will get better results by) using the Smart:EQ on the kick bus and snare bus, not the individual mic sources. The different target curves it is trying to achieve is probably based on general snare bus, kick bus, bass bus mixes (and so on), not based on individual mic mixes. If it were, there would probably be kick in, kick out, snare top and snare bottom profiles. It's a pretty nice plug-in to quickly get a somewhat workable sound, but I feel it's more geared towards producers and musicians rather than engineers. It's also very heavy on the CPU, even though Reaper only says it uses quite a small amount. For example: on a heavy project with a large plug-in count my CPU use hovers around 50-55% (in task manager), but as soon as I insert smart:EQ3 it suddenly jumps to 82-85% CPU use :S This is even though Reaper says that smart:EQ3 only uses 0.5-0.6% CPU. So smart:EQ3 is definitely doing something very heavy in the background that Reaper doesn't account for. Maybe this is just a problem with my system? Anyone else here that's also experiencing this?
@@CaldoHits that's not the reason it's about 40x more CPU intensive than say Pro-Q 3. It was using insane amounts of CPU wether I had it set to lin phase, minimum phase, dynamic EQ or not dynamic. Reaper only reported it to be using around 0.5% CPU, when it was in reality using about 20-25% CPU (in task mgr, not Reaper)! I'm wondering if it has something to do with the networking capabilities of the plug-in, because that's something that Reaper wouldn't account for in the CPU and RT CPU metering since it is working in the background, outside of Reaper, by creating a local network of some sorts. I didn't buy smart:EQ 3 after my 30-day trial had ended because of this fact, but maybe they have fixed that now.

This whole sonnible stuff looks like a big mystification. For me it's nothing more than a freq cheat sheet applied automatically. Notice- its allways making allmost the same cuts/boosts, even if you use eq before to boost some freq (just boost lows to ridicules level and this "AI" wil boost lows again!). Tested this in SmartEQ2, maybe they change something, but now, when i see boosted lows on a drum room track, then i dont think so... And its not using LPF HPF at all - wonder why.
can you make video on ToneBoosters or Analog Obsession?
we need an ai that tell us the name of the song!

i came back to this video today thinking "what if you run the mix trough this same process more than once? What the AI will decide to do?" but I don't have the plugins to test this :(
