    Master System version looks awesome for an 8bit system. Too bad it doesn't have music :(

    The SEGA/MEGA CD version remains the best one by a far margin. The CD quality OST and the "extra" content (not shown here, but present throughout the game) makes it the definitive version of this game.

    It's kind of crazy how much better the Amiga version could have been, it could have been much closer to the Mega Drive and SNES.

    • @Prelmable
      @Prelmable 2 года назад +3

      That's because Amiga and ST were the original versions and SNES/MD were released nearly a full year afterwards. They had time to improve, is my point.

    • @PixelShade
      @PixelShade 2 года назад

      @@Prelmable Yeah, you're probably right... and generally Amiga- (and Atari-) games often suffered from devs targeting both systems at once, not really utilizing any of their strengths but rather allowing the common denominator rule how the games was built and designed.

    • @Midwinter2
      @Midwinter2 2 года назад +2

      I disagree. The Amiga is being stretched here: it's using dual-playfield mode which places huge demands on the processor. This makes for a really tight colour palette as you can have only 7 colours in the foreground, eight in the background. It's really not much to work with. But the game runs at a smooth 50 frames per second - and at times with several enemies on screen at once. That's about as much as you'll get out of the Amiga.

    • @PixelShade
      @PixelShade 2 года назад +1

      @@Midwinter2 I mean, I don't want to hammer on the game. Because in the end, it's a nice Amiga game.
      However, In my eyes it currently runs at ~25fps, and due to the limited use of the second playfield I would rather see single playfield 32 colors. meanwhile using copper for sky gradients as well as multiplexed sprites for background parallax. Instead of a single cloud at the first level they could have had something that looked similar to the SNES and MD. Same goes for the forest and other stages. They would have needed to do some slight design changes, but all in all I think it would have resulted in a far more attractive results. You could hammer the copper and sprite hardware pretty hard without waking any meaningful performance on the blitter.

    • @Midwinter2
      @Midwinter2 2 года назад +1

      @@PixelShade Aha - nice reply! And nice technical knowledge of the Amiga. Yes, indeed, it is certainly possible to get more out of the Amiga than is demonstrated in 'Wolfchild'. And visually, I think 'Wolfchild' looks horrible - more due to the visual design than anything.
      But when compared to the body of Amiga games that were made, 'Wolfchild' is still in the upper ten percent in terms of technical achievement - and is about as good as you could expect from most decent programmers.
      Now, that is because so many Amiga games were shoddy (compare the smoothness of scrolling+animation in 'Wolfchild' to Psygnosis' appalling 'Barbarian', for example).
      Putting graphic design aside - to get better technical results than we see in Wolfchild, you'd need a really, really top programmer - and there was only ever a small handful of those.
      'Wolfchild' looks like 50fps to me - but I stand to be corrected. I am comparing to 'Ruff n'Tumble' that I have been reliably informed runs at 25fps - and I find the scrolling so bad in that game that it really hurts my eyes (I bought it back in the day for my Amiga). That is not the case with 'Wolfchild' - I can watch it with no ill effects.
      Have you seen the new game 'Metro Siege'? That makes astounding use of the Amiga, taking full advantage of the hardware sprites and copper in the way you've suggested to produce amazing results. But that is the case of a supremely talented programmer who has had a couple of years to plum the depths of what the Amiga has to offer - and who is working with an artist with outstanding design skills.
      But, honestly, that is the only game I can think of that gets such great performance out of the basic Amiga. Can you think of any others?

    LA version de Amiga es insuperable, ésta gente de Core por aquellos años, hacian virguerías ,solo hay q ver las micronmanía de la época, los ports para consolas, son meritorios, sobre todo los de SEGA, q respetan al original, Nintendo otra vez a su rollo y en mi opinion la version de SNES, está por detras de la SEGA, respecto a la MEGACD, es la única que incluye INTRO, ya que tiene espacio de sobra y música flipante. En consolas no parece salir bien parado , con las puntuaciones, sin embargo en amiga está por encima del 85, en la media de los titulos de Core.
    Para mi, me quedo con la versión original q es la que programaron para AMIGA. Y de hecho, ahora noin, me enciendo la anbernic y me hecho unos vicios.
    Gracias.

    you can tell the original version is for Amiga, there's something about the movement that's just native on it and lost in the other platforms.

    • @rafaellima83
      @rafaellima83 2 года назад +2

      Running at 50 fps.
      I am not european, so have this in mind. I had an Amiga back then and still own one. I always felt the Amiga games also had something about "movement" that were unique to them. And at one point it hit my mind.
      Every system I played before or after ran at 60 fps. The Amiga was the only one running natively at 50 fps.
      And, ok, some games were made for the NTSC market and would run at 60 fps, but I honestly can't remember a lot of games that actually kept at a steady 60 fps when the computer was set to NTSC compatible output.

    Can't decide between the Sega 16- bits or the snes version.... The snes is more impressive, but I like the HUD better on the Genesis/CD.
    Surprised at how competent the SMS version is.
    I always wondered how many people bought these spruced up versions of Amiga games.

      Yamaha YM2149F (later Atari might be better) is a quasi-clone of the "sound chip" used by many 8 bit (Spectrum ZX, MSX) ....in many ways it's worse than the Sid (C64)

    SNES is the winner for me. The Megadrive isn't far behind, but there's something about the parallax scrolling of the sky which I'm not sure about. I never had this game, but as an ST owner at the time, it's very disappointing to see how poor the Atari version was. The ST was capable of better and by 1992 they should have been taking advantage of the improved sound and scrolling of the STE. Sadly the days of the ST were numbered and it could just be that the developers didn't want to put the effort in.

    Gotta go with the Genesis version. The Sega CD version might have CD-quality audio, but its music isn't as strong or as funky as the vanilla Genesis version.

    From best to worst:
    1) Genesis/Sega CD
    2) SNES / Amiga (SNES is smoother but the physics is wrong, too fast)
    3) Master System / Game Gear
    4) Atari ST (looks unplayable due to low framerate)

    Horrible colour palette - particularly on the Amiga and Atari ST. Amiga version has nice, smooth parallax scrolling - the ST version is very jerky, though. Overall, I prefer the look of the Master System, for some reason.

    Atari ST version has absolutely terrible graphics and sound - cant the ST even do parallax scrolling?. What surprised me was how good the Nintendo veesion was - how the hell did the snes get cd quality sound from a cartridge? Both 8 bit versions were in line with expectations.

    Sega Genesis/Mega-Drive/SNES version is a joke at 1 MB or 8 Mbits (megabits) i would’ve used a bigger (larger) cartridge 9, 10, 11, 12 Mbits (megabits)
