Retrosurta, you forgot Amstrad CPC version
The newest version of Toki might appeal to nostalgia folks, but the animation is perfect. It’s a way to bring a classic game back for a new generation of consoles and to the children of those who remember the original fondly.
Too many extra sounds and stuff. Too bad.
The Amiga is my favorite. I never knew this was out for the ST. It's better than I thought it would be with the limited on-screen colors / sound.
Amiga is or seems worse with limited audio, colours, graphics, music, sound, visuals
One of the best Amiga ports. Provided an arcade or console experience at home.
And better music.
The Mega Drive is fundamentally a different game where you feel mostly overpowered while in the original and the other ports you always feel like on the verge of dieing. That's my favourite version actually, I always felt Toki was originally way too much like an euro-platformer where you have to memorise everything before getting anywhere. The Amiga and ST are very good representations of the original, if you like that. I'm not sure the frame rate is up there but overall they are well above the usual ports to these machines. Ocean France took pride in their work and it shows.
This time we can say that Amiga and Atari ST have good ports. A shame the one-button control.
@@retrosutra Right, but to be completely honest up to jump on a joystick is better than up to jump on a game pad.
@Diskun u mean zool
@Diskun well I enjoy the Amiga more than the megadrive version, I hate james pond and zool with all my heart and I DO think the Amiga soundtrack sounds way better than the MD. I found the MD version very boring tbh.
The Mehgadrive version of Toki is like the NES version of Rygar. They are both platform offshoots that should have been named differently since they are not arcade ports. I personally hope for an arcade experience not a Mario version.
The Amiga version was unmatched. What an amazing port!
One of the best arcade conversions for this system in my opinion
French team (Ocean France).
The Stereo music in the Amiga version gives me goosebumps from the slick beats!
Amiga kept me addicted to this game in the past, but I also enjoyed the Lynx version. Today, the new version on Xbox One is still super fun.
Finally, a good Amiga port
There were good ports of Amiga arcade games in 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990 before Toki in 1991
Famicom version have a some difference:
1.Toki dies in a single hit (NES add a health system)
2.The map screen show the your score and the high score (NES remove this feature)
3.The continue screen says only CONTINUE? YES NO and the credits left (NES Version says would you press A or B to challenge again and save Miho otherwise you can stay an ape for rest of your life and the credits left and YES NO)
4.When you win a level the game says immediately stage clear (NES version gave you some power up and bonus before says stage clear)
So many arcade games were changed on the NES such as with Rygar; very disappointing.
Dang, Toki looks really interesting. I might download it for MAME when I get the time.
Toki is one of my fave platformers. First played on Atari STe, then Amiga and C64 Cart. I also have the remaster but the difficulty puts me off playing it, so i stick to M.a.m.e. Great comparison yet again retrosutra. Thanks
O remake ficou perfeito! Um dos melhores jogos já lançados!
Played the amiga version back in the day converted by the excellent team ocean France. Lovely colourful with some Parallax too
The sound and music in the Amiga version is really good. They didn't add a bunch of crappy digitized sounds like most Amiga games.
Amiga version seems to me the best port of all. The girl in the Atari version is brunette due to color restrictions, i guess. ;-)
Amiga - Yes, my favorite version. ST hair color - weird, as that color is available. I think they split the palette 1/2 down the screen to get 32 colors and fucked up the palette =) Good attempt though.
@@IntoTheVerticalBlank if they did fuck up the Amiga port’s palette 4,096 colours is that why it looks Atari ST?
how did they fuck it up?
@@jasonlee7816 I think they just didn't have enough colors on the ST version and didn't do a Pal split 1/2 way down the screen render to try and match the 2 color screens of the Amiga, which they could have done. They also may have tried and could not match the same brown unless they used the STE palette,
I played this on a real Amiga 500 and I loved it and still today!
The best one is the original Arcade game but I have to say, the music is better on the Amiga.
The Amiga version is the best conversion of the Arcade game.
The Atari ST version is also good, but I recommend it only for Atari owners and fans.
The C64 version is good for this machine but I don't understand why they changed the music. The intro music became the first level's music. And I don't remember, which music is on the first level instead, at least it sounds good. The intro music (1st level music originally) could've been better compared to the SID's capabilities.
The NES version is great, but the music is a real disapointment from the musician - the sounds are very different from the original tune. And again, the NES sound chip could do more!
The Sega version is very good, but it's like if it was another game, like a Toki 2. This version is also definitely worth playing.
The Atari Lynx version is surprisingly good for this old portable gadget. The pixelated graphics takes some getting used to, but other than that, it's a likeable version.
The J2ME version is very good, it's a must have for your compatible device.
I hate the Switch.., etc. version. It looks terrible! It's like a flash game, synthetic, ugly, I can't like it.
I don't even want to see it.
The current remake is really cool looking. I'd like to try that out. The Genesis version, with it's cheeky "Going Ape Spit" subtitle, was the first I came across. Got the Lynx and NES ones later.
The Amiga version is the best port, it even features new music tracks for some later levels. Ocean France really did an amazing job with this.
Yes, I agree with you. One of the best Arcade conversions for the Amiga.
The Genesis/Megadrive version is totally i love it, because the colour's.
The Amiga music is definitely the best, and one of the few with a proper stereo mix, I notice.
The latest one has that Flash game aesthetic that I'm not a fan of, but the animation at least is good.
That's probably the best arcade port the Amiga ever got.
I'd say it's up there with Pang!, R-Type, Silk Worm, Rainbow Islands and Rod Land. The recent ports of Gradius, Bomb Jack and Bubble Bobble, among others, are also excellent.
21:30 Love it whenever the bosses die like this in the genesis version.
Amiga did the best port to any home system but also have the best music. Only first level was ported from arcade, but the rest is damn good original soundtrack on it's own (also the Atari ST got the same music).
Amiga is the best for me.....the remake is very beautiful
I Agee . Amiga best for Toki.
16:54 Toki: Going Ape-Spit! I’d admit you can’t jump while spitting and die in one hit! 🐒
Atari Lynx. Captures the arcade game almost perfectly.
Agreed.
I’m looking to see if you are working for Bart vs the space mutants, and I know some of the versions gave serious headaches
Perfect Cut between Famicom and NES! I love how the music doesn't get interrupted!👍🏼
Hahaha i am glad you noticed It!
The Atari Lynx deserves a lot of credit here, looks, and plays great!
I have only played the Amiga version.
And I like it 👍
Atari ST! Not bad!
At last, we finally have a version comparison for another one of the games featured on this channel's banner! Hopefully, it won't be too long before we see videos of Blue's Journey and Shadow of the Beast.
La versión de Sega Genesis fue la primera que jugué gracias a mi papá. No me acostumbro a la versión de Nes, menos la de Switch 😅
Cool game!
Amiga, Lynx are the best versions after the Arcade.
Agreed.
So often C64 music blows all the others out the water. It was just the platform to be on for all the great musicians.
We need more remakes for Windows like this. Midnight Resistance for sure.
I'm so used to the Genesis version of Toki, which ironically is nothing like it's other ports. I've watched a TAS video on the port so many times that I've been so used to the music, graphics, and sound.
I think the C64 version's music is the best sounding, with the Amiga version looking the most defined it can possibly be.
i believe Amiga/Lynx/ST made better use of the audio, music, sound than on the C64
I never knew the Sega Genesis Version is the one which is different.....
Lynx version is my favorite
Played this game on cabinet! Later on Amiga! Nice game!
Amiga rocks the house, as always. Why isn't that computer still around today? I'd much have an Amiga than a Windows PC anyday.
The Lynx version is excellent, you just need to see it on a smaller sized window or screen. That handheld does NOT look good when blown up, but don't let that distract you. It's basically a portable Amiga and, in a better world, would have been a huge success. We should be playing videogames on a Super Turbo Edition Lynx 3DS by now.
The later 2018 version was actually originally to be made by Golgoth Studios who made the panned Magical Drop V but Microids later picked it up.
That's really interesting, I had no idea it changed development teams. I remembered seeing it back in what, 2017/18? and being blown away by the art, but it disappeared for ages, first I saw was it was out on switch, so I bought it immediately.
and cpc ?
I found that apparently in production

I believe that the megadrive version of the game and the original for slot machines are the best.
Thanks for the video ) !
Я считаю что megadrive версия игры и оригинал на игровые автоматы лучшие.
Спасибо за видео ) !
I own the C64(cart), NES, Famicom, Lynx and Switch versions as well as the Mega Drive game.
I think the NES(US) one is the most playable out of the bunch, it's not as stiff as the rest, Toki has a health bar which is replanished after every boss and his movement and jumps aren't as stiff as those in the original version and its ports.
Granted I haven't played the Amiga version, though it looks very pretty I will get around to it, but out of the ones I have played I'd say the NES/FC one is the most playable. Still as a kid I played the game at the arcades so I'm used to its original controls and stifness, I often play it on MAME and Lynx too.
EDIT: Apparently only the US NES Version has the health bar, I recently got the Japanese one and didn't have time to test it out so I assumed it was the same, it is not, the Japanese version has no health bar at least not in the beginning. So the US NES Toki remains supreme :)
I realized the Atari Lynx is little slow.
Nostalgia ❤
Toki got the Nike Cortez 😂 nice
I see that Toki was one of the first "return to monke" memes out there.
EVOLUTION of Games (Super Mario Land)Please
6:38 thats are the credits of staff of snow bros(amiga)
Toki Walked Away Instead Of Transforming Into An ape In Rody Frost Version
2 videos about the same game? interesting, you still forgot the famicom
I had it on megadrive back in the day and now remake on switch.
Witch is the best version imo.
You can play handheld or on tv.
The music for the Amiga / Atari ST versions was adapted and composed (most of the tracks are originals not coming from the Arcade) by Pierre-Eric Loriaux.
Pierre Eric Loriaux badly composed the audio, music, sound for the Cabal Amiga/ST arcade game port (version) 1989/1990
Amiga is very close to arcade, c64 is very respectable for a 8-bit home computer port.
Entonces el de Arcade es más corto el juego?
Solo el de Sega Genesis es más extenso
面白そう!(≧▽≦)NintendoSwitchにも 出ているのが
ありがたいが 本家してみたいです。
Not so fun fact: in the Amiga version of "Toki"; you are actually see Miho's nipples in the opening of the game. :(
31:46 Song Name?
Funny game )
Name :Toki (トキ)
Year : 1989
Genre : Platforming/Adventure
Arcade version is clearly the absolute winner !!!!!
Na, stop beign nostalfag, obviously the Remake has best graphics, animation, soundtrack and etc.
But in original versions yeah, Arcade was the best and the best way to play original game
La de Megadrive. Basicamente por que es la que más se diferencia de la recreativa .
Graphics - 2019 Version
Audio - Amiga Version
Best audio: Amiga, J2ME
version (not PC or Switch)
Best graphic: Arcade version (not PC or Switch)
Wow i had no idea they did a remake. And it lost all the charm. :-(
La cumbia de toki java movile
Many criticize the MD version for being totally different from the Arcade, but that is its great strength since if you want the superior version you only need the Arcade, but if you want what looks more like a Toki 2 part it would be the MD version since The entire labyrinth of levels is totally different and much longer than the Arcade, in addition to preserving the same game mechanic, it has some additions such as new Powers that are not included in the other versions ... That's why you are a fan of Toki have the arcade version is the best option but you also have to have the MD version because you literally want a new adventure.
sorry, have to disagree.. the MD version is just crap. None of the complexity or uniqueness of the level layouts for the other versions, it's just a boring, dull platformer with a (mangled) Toki sprite and handling. Aladdin on the MD is a better conversion of Toki than Toki :P
@@gravious well, I would give you the benefit of your own opinion but it seems that you just want to troll the forum or you hate MD for being a different option that comments on the arcade and not a forgettable version like the one you have to adore why it came out on your console of marked adored by you; Toky de MD is literally a new and different Game and that is something that no other version will have ... now I give you the last word so that your self-esteem does not deflate.
@@davidvfx No need to get salty, it's clear you have a lot of love for the MD version and that's fine, but it's like making a perfectly reasonable platformer and then sticking unrelated sprites from another IP on it (*cough* Universal Soldier / Turrican 2 *cough*). There's no reason why the MD couldn't have had the best port, the machine is capable enough and lesser machines have done better - demonstrably so. It was just a lazy port :-/
And you're right, it is my own opinion, I'm not trolling, I'm entering into discussion - I had it on the Amiga back in the day, I played it in the arcades and I own the switch version :-/
Toki on the Megadrive is fine if you are not interested in an actual conversion of the Toki Arcade, as a conversion, its quite ridiculous.
There is no reason the dev team doing the conversion couldn't have simply done a proper conversion of the arcade, but they took too much artistic licence and turned out something that simply isn't Toki.
A "new adventures" of Toki is fine, but let people get to experience the game as was intended, and on that basis the Megadrive version fails badly.

*BREAKING* *NEWS:* Local monke goes on violent murder spree using only saliva.
Published by independent video game company, TAD Corp. it has published/reprogrammed by other such as Ocean (for home computers we're dominated in Europe, also imported copies), SEGA (for Mega Drive/Genesis), Taito (for Family Computer (as JuJu Densetsu or JuJu's Legend) / NES (add more features), FAB (for Lynx, however little bit slower because Atari Lynx is worse than Game Gear).
The original is very nearly-comparisons, but remake is done well......
Lynx version is super detailed for a handheld system. Game Gear had no chance running this.
i believe Atari Lynx could run Toki because it had Mikey 8-bit CMOS chip 16 MHz + WDC 8-bit 65SC02 processor 4 MHz vs Game Gear would struggle Z80 @ 3.5 MHz
Amiga is best port. Sega Mega Drive: remake?
I'm early.
El único que si modifico la tarea fue el genesis mega drive jaja y reprobó jsjajajaj
imo genesis best versions
Arcade, NES y remake 2018
why is the awful, crap, dreadful, horrible, terrible NES port better than the remake?
El Atari ST que macana que no tiene soporte de sprites, se queda a mitad de camino...
in english
coño. si es oscar puente. 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Ok
WTF with the Genesis version?!?!
Good Amiga but no AGA. I have great a old Amiga 1200. Amiga 1200 runs faster with more color.
A1200 was not out when this game went out. That would make your comment irrelevant (twice as the rest is not that interesting).
🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒
More like se
The PS4 version is so fancy that actually destroyed the game.
Where atari 7800
Sega 😢😢
Switch version is utter garbage.
whoa@parallax on Genesis!
Atari Lynx. Captures the arcade game almost perfectly.
