@@Dorian_Scott Eh I have this version, the SNES version, the Game Boy version, AND the NES version. I'd highly recommend the NES version, it feels better for some odd reason, as though the Toads were meant for an 8 bit console more than a 16 bit one.
I find it really interesting that while the SNES version were content to increase the colors on the NES version's toads, the Genesis version here actually have redrawn sprites altogether for them!
Both versions redraw the toads. The Both SNES and Genesis version use larger sprites for the toads than the NES version (about 42 pixels tall for both 16bit versions compared to about 32 pixels tall for the NES version). The Genesis version is still considered the better port overall due to the SNES version cutting a few corners (lost visual effects, dialog, music, etc). One oddity is despite having noticeably different toad redraws the double dragon redraws are virtually identical between both ports aside from their palette. Its something of a trend for the two ports: some redrawn sprites are shared between both and others are completely different.
Actually, the character select theme is inside the SNES version, but it went unused. If you want a SNES version with all the musics, then you should play the MSU-1 hack.
This is probably my favorite version of Battletoads & Double Dragon - Rare definitely handled this one with a little more care than the Genesis port of the original Battletoads. Most people know Dave Wise for his SNES music, but he was also one of those composers who knew how to make the Genesis sound grand... even if this game isn't exactly the best example to go by (Snake Rattle 'n Roll holds that distinction for me). I also like how this version corrects some minor visual weirdness that was present in the NES and SNES versions... namely the elevator animations - I know I can't be the only one who was bothered by the elevator doors in Blag's stage opening by sliding upwards when they clearly weren't meant to.
I agree. This is better than the NES & SNES versions. This was the version of Battletoads & Double Dragon I remember trying to beat as a kid. I done it once, and it was a lot of getting used to, But the music made the journey worthwhile. It sounds much better than the SNES & NES versions. I would love to see this game get remade someday for PS4, Switch, & Xbox One. Who's with me!
"Rare definitely handled this one with a little more care than the Genesis port of the original Battletoads." That's because the Mega Drive version of the original Battletoads was not developed by Rare themselves. Rather, Sega licensed the rights of the Mega Drive version and tasked development to the then infant Arc System Works (exactly the same process was done with the Game Gear version of the original Battletoads). The Mega Drive version of Battletoads Double Dragon, on the other hand, is truly "A RARE Production", and it's the only time they ever develop a Battletoads game on a Sega system by themselves (so yes, that makes the Master System version of Battletoads in Battlemaniacs also not developed by them).
Probably because battletoads (1991) was their competetor. The Ninja turtles (1984) franchise was before battletoads. So the turtles creators probably saw battletoads as a turtles rip-off.
It's much more simple than that. Tradewest had publishing rights for both of these series, licensed from their respective creators, something they didn't have with the TMNT. Clearly this was Tradewest's idea, and nothing else.
Fun fact: this was my favorite game on Genesis, but it stopped working for a long time until one day I spit a little bit blowing into the cartridge, like blowing raspberry, and somehow it started working. I'm so confused seeing so many people online claiming the SNES has better sound. Maybe you need to play it with a proper CRT in person to really hear the difference. But in literally every video I've watched comparing all the versions the SNES sounds considerably more muffled than the Genesis with a notable difference in sound variety. The music doesn't even change for the boss fights on SNES! And to claim the NES version is superior to all of them I find kind of silly. The SNES has some key differences but the Genesis version is superior to the NES is pretty much every single way. Don't get me wrong it's a great game no matter how you play it but there's no way the definitive version isn't on Genesis. In the end I guess it all just comes down to nostalgia.
"Maybe you need to play it with a proper CRT in person to really hear the difference." I've... never heard that before. 😶What exactly would a screen technology have to do with sound?
Seems closer to the NES version than the SNES version, but isn't a perfect conversion. It also lacks the Missile landing in the Level 6 intro and it makes the transition a bit too sudden.
I never really noticed this before, but did ATLUS games swap billy and jimmy's hair color for the GBA remake? Because billy has brown hair and jimmy is blonde in that one.

I grew up w the genesis version. My friend had the SNES version and I considered that version unplayable. Like the boss music, the space race music when it speeds up whenever you encounter a space bull etc. SNES missing quality of life improvements
If that's all it takes to make a game unplayable, then we sure played a lot of games back then that were unplayable. SNES version's fine, I own it, this Genesis version, the Game Boy version, and the NES one. To me the NES version plays the best, and the NES soundchip sounded much better than the 16 bit versions of this game.
I think this version is the best overall experience among all the versions.
