  • Dairo Antonio Úsuga, aka "Otoniel," was extradited from Bogota, Colombia, to the Southern District of New York May 4, 2022. The U.S. Marshals Service Special Operations Group conducted the transport as soon as he landed in S/NY and continued on with the processing and security of the move. Úsuga pleaded guilty Jan. 25, 2023, to running a continuing criminal enterprise -the Colombian paramilitary and multibillion dollar drug organization known as the "Clan del Golfo" and to related drug distribution charges. Úsuga was sentenced Aug. 8 to a mandatory minimum term of 20 years in prison and up to life in prison. As part of the plea agreement, Úsuga also agreed to pay a $216 million forfeiture money judgment.

I remember watching an older recruiting video when my high school class was lucky enough to host a deputy US Marshal, the extradition process was shown but just briefly.
Actually getting to see the work the USMS is doing is awesome and sure to inspire the younger generation.
    Awesome job.

*If commenters on this thread understood the intelligence and sophistication of some of these criminal organizations, you'd readily agree the Marshalls are a top tier federal law enforcement agency. The USMS may not put their agents through an OTC but similar training will be received to counter any and all potential situations. Forming a perimeter doesn't control an environment. That's laughable.*

Here in Australia when we extradiate somebody, they ask for volunteers who are usually the fat sergeant's who want a free holiday for a couple of days.
They throw on a suit that used to fit them back in 2003, before their weight blew out before jumping on a commercial flight and sitting at the back of economy class, with mister criminal cuffed with a jacket over his hands
Once they drop mister crim at the correction center, they then proceed to get extremly hammered at a bar, before flying home the next day

I've had the pleasure of working alongside the US Marshals in a past life, and I have nothing but good things to say about their professionalism and character.
That being said, this is absolutely disgraceful. Making such a huge scene in the middle of NYC, with dozens of DUSMs to handle a single hogtied individual reeks of an organization that is very unsure of itself, and feels the need to prove how tough it is, rather than let it's actions speak for itself.
Not to mention, as others have posted, the potential risks of handling a prisoner in such a high profile location. If someone wanted to disrupt the process, either to rescue or silence this defendant (who has not yet been convicted of a crime), the location chosen would have place both the DUSMs and the prisoner in way more danger than was necessary.
Justice isn't a show for mass public consumption.

What do think about the idea that perhaps the sensationalism of the transport is to send a message. That the United States places incredible resources and priority on high value targets. I would argue this acts as as another deterrent. A stark reminder to all the: kingpins, leadership, and top bosses of criminal organizations about what lies ahead if they continue on in their line of work. If I were in the position of a top level crime group- seeing some crazy sh*t like this would have me perhaps deescalating my level of violence and/or “work” out of pure fear. This flashy reminder more so states that if you continue on in your criminal line of work, serious; uber-capable intervention will come your way.
As for your other points, k*lling off this guy would be a suicide/jail mission. I cannot imagine there would be anyway to pull the trigger on buddy and live a free man after. Between the chopper and area full of kitted out LEOs, I’d argue our buddy in cuffs is pretty safe where he is. I mean sh*t man. The huge scene in itself is more than enough flashiness to send a message to the bad guys. “This could be you.”

So a failed nation is when you treat criminals as criminals?

Please don't misunderstand: bringing criminals to justice is great. It's this pageantry, uploading it to youtube cause it's so "badass", as other commenters like to say. That's the joke. That's why we've failed. Justice isn't a game, it's not a show we put on, it's what makes us civilized. If this is how we're going to think of justice, it's already lost. This was put on for the cameras, not for a just society. It shows that our priorities are all wrong, a nation consumed with media, acting out a scene from a 90s action movie we saw as kids. It's so tragic.@@f18murderhornet

@@scottfarcus1667 theirs videos of people being beheaded on the internet I think this is just another reminder of what goes on, any asshole can hold a camera and film doesn't make the people watching it doomed. Wanna talk about priorities talk about how important it is to fund ukraine and let thousands of migrants and nationalist flood the country.

LEOs shouldn't be militarized. This is ridiculous. The Marshall service used to do their job in suits and ties.

They're escorting the boss of a drug cartel not giving away parking tickets.
Futhermore they're federal agents not mall cops.
