The most heartbreaking part about this insanely good controller is how next to impossible it is to make it function with anything that isn’t a WiiU. SUCH a missed opportunity.
A simple USB bluetooth adapter lets it work on Switch and PC instantly. It's my main controller for the Switch. I specifically got the adapter right before Tears of the Kingdom came out because I was so used to the Wii U version of BOTW. Felt right at home
There's adapters from 8bitdo and Mayflash and Linux has support out of the box without a dongle. There's also software to make it usable on Windows, I don't remember the name of it.
My favorite thing about the Woz is that everyone rn talking about Switch 2 leaks and the pictures and all and he still just talking about the wii u pro controller
It’s the same d-pad style as the gamepad and Classic Controllers. The cross is pretty large, and while the buttons don’t click, they feel super sturdy and responsive, unlike the mushy d-pads on Gamecube or Switch Pro. I’d say it’s on par with the NES/SNES d-pads..
@jumentoqueanima I am not a fan of how the Switch pro controller feels materials wise. The triggers and buttons are mushy, and the sticks are a downgrade from the Wii U Pro controller iirc. I prefer clickiness in my pads I personally use the Gullikit King Kong pro 2 for my switch, since it has hall effect sticks and proper clickey face buttons while liscensing the mold of the Xbox controller, so its high quality and ergonomic
I really loved having both sticks on top, whenever I’d play a game with full camera controls on the right stick, I’d use my thumbs for the buttons and have my right pointer finger control the right stick, kinda like a weird claw grip. It was way easier for me to use buttons and control the camera at the same time
Scott, there are times I disagree with you and move on, but this is one where I can't even agree to disagree. Just a moment. "Not now, Mom, someone is wrong on the internet and it's Scott!" Granted, perhaps the only time I use the Wii U Pro Controller is when the GamePad is out of battery and I can't find the charger, but even then, I'd just look for the charger since most games either require the GamePad or benefit from it anyway (Breath of the Wild without gyro-aim?), but at least in terms of how it feels, it's pure heaven. The Sticks being further apart makes so much sense. I know you show the Classic Controller Pro, but as you point out I think in an earlier video with the original Classic Controller, your thumbs kiss with the sticks when pushing them towards the center. This isn't an issue with the flatter Control Pad (D-Pad) and A/B/X/Y Buttons. Maybe they're a little close, I suppose, but I don't think they're that much closer than the NES and SNES controllers are to their respective buttons, so go off, why don't you? Off your rocker is more like it. I think it's something you're not used to, because I thought the same thing, and then I felt in my hands and maybe my hands are different because there's no blood on them, but everything is at a comfortable distance from my thumbs and index fingers. The Z Buttons are a little bit weird, I'll give you that, but the Z Buttons are good enough, and I don't like the lack of MotionPlus, but you know what has MotionPlus? Some Wii Remote Controllers do. Just make sure to use the wrist straps to keep it in place and to prevent yourself from squirting over the Pro Controller from how excited you are from spitting. It's very unprofessional that a lack of microphone won't stop you. That's the real travesty.
If you hack your Switch you can add a plug-in that lets it connect to the Switch. Just careful around amiibo functions, some cause everything to crash.
i remember people praising the Wii U Pro controller for the stick layout. i never owned one, and im sure it isn't too bad, but it always seemed like it would be really uncomfortable. back in 2017, i saw some people lamenting that the Switch Pro controller was redesigned back the the diagonal layout, but that piece of hardware is divine. i feel my virginity slipping away just thinking about it
It's not the perfect controller for everything, but it makes some games work much better. I have an offbrand WiiU procon for the Switch, and it's great for games like Pokemon Legends: Arceus, Astral Chain, and (depending on your control setup) Smash Bros.. Much of those games use sticks+triggers more than they use stick+buttons, so it works well to have both thumbs in a more forward position.
It's the opposite for me. Both sticks being at the top is way more comfortable than the Playstation or Xbox layouts, resting my thumbs up there just feels natural.
The WiiU Pro Controller is my favorite controller of all time. You can play the D-Pad and 4 button controls at the bottom (like an SNES) but the joysticks are at the top. I prefer that compared to the joysticks at the bottom or mixed like the Switch or XBox.
The stickplacement is my favorite ever.. both sticks at the same height and not in the crampy PS-Style. Buttons were just better in gamecube-style but it's probably never coming back.
Honestly, this is one of my favorite controllers, I use it almost every day for my PC and Steam Deck. The layout with the sticks on top is definitely weird, yeah, but it's comfortable enough. Mainly it's that battery life. I've been gaming a long time and have yet to find another controller that can beat it. Despite using it almost every day, I only need to charge it, like, every two months or so. That's absolutely crazy. My drama queen PS5 controller can't even last two days.
The switch pro has more issues so I wouldn't recommend you use it or anything, but man its battery life is pretty damn good Meanwhile yea the dualsense controller is uniquely bad
@@kingstarscream320 if you take into account the fact it has adaptive triggers (requires robust triggers and motors to hold the trigger in place), the touchpad (which requires a capacitive touch surface), a pretty decent battery to last as long as it does, along with gyroscopes, controller speakers, actually good rumble and the other controller bits i think you'd understand why its a little more expensive than xbox
@ I’d understand if it were an optional higher-end controller, but as the primary first party controller? Most gamers don’t need or want most of that crap. Touch pad? Give me a break. And I remember speakers in the Wiimotes being such a shallow gimmick.
I played Breath of the Wild on Wii U, and there were several shrines I just didn't bother with because they had those gyro puzzles that required you to switch to the Wii U gamepad.
I remember this glitch with the Pro Controller that when you went to the home menu sometimes the control stick would drift north east on the menu and you'd either have to re-pair the controller or reset the console. I can't believe they never fixed that issue.
Yeah if this thing had Gyro and better PC compatibility it would've been amazing, probably the defacto emulation controller. But alas! No gyro support means no gyro support in Wii U games in pro controller mode, meaning you can't even use the later switch controller on PC for Gyro - as any game with Gyro will also expect you to have a second touch screen in your hands, which is a MASSIVE pain in the ass on PC. You have to install Linux on your switch for that functionality, not even joking - because the Wii U gamepad can't be used on PC. This one decision meant that Wii U emulation SUCKS. The core feature is missing!
@@uponeric36 You had most easy option is buy 8bitdo USB bluetooth. You can actually connect any controllers you like in any console and PC. I'm generally used playing my wiiu pro controller in my switch because my pro controller die and don't want wasted $70-80 for that bad switch official controller. Even Third-Party controller are better to play in switch (or PC). Another time "Linyuvo KS42 Wireless Joy-pad" is better joy-con literally.
I definitely don't think the Switch Pro D-pad feels good, but I've never actually had an issue with it. I also find the ergonomics of the controller to be really nice.
Not even close. Dpad sucks but the battery life is still great (40 hrs is still insane next to the dualsense), it has the gyro and nfc of the gamepad missing from the wii u pro controller, hd rumble, has better ergonomics with a non-weird button and stick layout, and has arguably better build quality with snappier shoulders and triggers and non-smudgy plastic. Also, if you've ever used a wii u, you'd find that the pro controller is borderline useless on the console. The gamepad still turns on when you turn on the console, and because of the gamepads disgusting battery life, you have to reach over like an asshole, open a menu, and turn the gamepad off (even if it's plugged in, it's distracting when the screen is on). And like scott says, so many games don't support it. Even for the ones that do, many features in games rely on having the gamepad screen or motion controls.
I used one of these guys for playing on PC, connected via Bluetooth and a fanmade piece of software which took all the inputs and converted them into an emulated Xbox controller in real time. As complicated as that may sound, it had close to zero input delay and i played some intense stuff. By far the best feeling sticks out of all controllers from that generation, even the next one and like we all know the crazy battery life. The only downside would probably be the lack of analog triggers, but that depends on the kind of games you play. Overall, it was my favorite out of all controllers i ever used.
this is legit an S tier controller for me I know everyone doesn't love the design of having the two sticks at the top but for me its just PERFECT for shooters. Honestly a lot of the time if I'm playing something on PC there's a good chance ill pick it over even the Switch pro controller. Easily the most slept on controller of all time that's just my opinion.
I have 2 things to say about your criticisms of the symmetric top sticks. 1. I think this layout makes the most sense for people who primarily play first person games. Granted, that wasn't exactly a super common use case on the Wii U, but with Zombie U for example, I loved the symmetric top sticks. It felt a lot more ergonomic than other controllers. 2. I don't think it was done just to "be different." I think it was to provide consistency with the Wii U Gamepad.
I find the dual raised analogues on the pro controller to be so comfortable and it feels like the Steamdeck took the stick location inspiration from the Wii u too
I used a Wii U Pro controller for about a decade as my main controller for PC. I've had to replace one and my second one started having some weird problems about a week ago, so I finally switched to using my Switch Pro. I still miss the old controller though, I really liked having the right stick be above the buttons, it felt more natural to nudge it with my knuckle.
This is one of my favorite controllers. The d-pad and face buttons are perfect for snes-type control schemes, and the sticks are really smooth. Only complaint is the lack of analog triggers
I'm hoping and dreaming that 8bitdo releases a controller with the Wii U Pro controller layout. I loved the feeling of playing games that used both sticks with both my thumbs in that comfortable spot at the top of the controller.
I picked this controller up fairly recently. I never owned one until this year, and I now actively go out of my way to play retro games on Wii U when I have the option because of it. No doubt in my mind that it's the best controller for retros, and it isn't even close.
I really like the buttons and Dpad in the middle bc I got big ass hands so the controller feels bigger when I get to fully outstretch my fingers to use em, also the sticks being at the top are good for fps games which isn't that useful on Wii U but the Steam Deck supports the Pro Controller natively
Bought my Wii U back in 2014 right after Mario Kart 8 released and my Pro Controller still holds up incredibly well. A lot of people missed out on a great controller and console, the Wii U is still the last Nintendo console with a personality. It had that Nintendo touch that got lost with the Switch. The Pro Controller also has a very rare layout with two thumbsticks at the top combined with the insane battery life and lightweight build that you can't find anywhere, even in Chinese controllers. It also doesn't fucking drift, that alone makes it the goat.
After reading the comments my mind was blown! After all these years I had no idea there were more people like me that love this controller so much they still use it to this day. My JoyCons got heavy drift after 3 months of use back when the console released, so I got an 8bitdo adapter and have been using my WiiU Pro controller for my Switch since. This is also my dedicated controller for PC, I love it so much, the only real downside for me is the lack of gyro.
The Wii U pro controller is my favorite controller of all time, to the point where I use an adapter that lets me use it on switch and PlayStation. I know I’m rare but I love the stick placement and how light it is!
I love this controller and it's so cheap at retro game stores and I've stockpiled many of them. Feels great in my large hands. I use it on Switch, PS3, PS4, and PS5 with adapters.
the gpd win 3 also has the sticks at the top, apparently to keep them from blocking your thumbs from touching the keyboard and touchscreen i wouldnt be surprised if the wii u gamepad has them along the top for the same reason and from there, id argue it makes sense for the pro controller's sticks to be at the top, to match the arrangement from the gamepad
the worst part of right stick up top is; due to games like FPS games. Think about what button would normally be reload and jumb and that they're usually the closest to the stick in a standard configuration. but with stick up top, they're the buttons that are the furthest away.
Love this controller, probably one of my all time favorites. Battery still lasts forever, and I still use it pretty regularly (for Wii U, and on PC w/an adapter)
I played my first Call of Duty, which was Black Ops II, on this thing. I ran that controller almost into the ground as I played the crap of BO2, often using the Wii U gamepad as a monitor when others were using the TV.
I actually found both analog sticks being on the top incredibly comfortable. I really wish someone would make something similar for the Switch. If not Nintendo first party, then Power A or even some no-name chinese maker.
The WiiU Pro controller forces you to give it two thumbs up, making it the most appreciated controller ever for shooters.

The most heartbreaking part about this insanely good controller is how next to impossible it is to make it function with anything that isn’t a WiiU. SUCH a missed opportunity.
And how impossible it is to function even with many Wii U games for no reason lol
If you want a similar controller, look at the Vex V5 controller it has bluetooth
@ any chance you think that could work on a mod wii?
these things are amazing because they're compatible with a hacked Wii so you can play any GameCube game or emulator with a modern wireless controller
Loved how it's battery life felt never ending.
You know how timeless Scott is when you don’t realize your watching a new video from 2 hours ago.
My favorite thing about the Woz is that everyone rn talking about Switch 2 leaks and the pictures and all and he still just talking about the wii u pro controller
I love the Wii U Pro Controller. Great battery life and the layout mimics the Wii U Gamepad.
Finally a 13 minute video of scott complaining that the thumb sticks are on the top and the buttons are on the bottom
Legitimately the most comfortable game controller ever made.
0:02 wow Scott admitting to Sex Work was not on my bingo card today
Don’t worry he is still a virgin
The Wii U Pro Controller definitely did the dpad better than the Switch’s
So true....
Is It a clicky d-pad like the new 3ds?
It’s the same d-pad style as the gamepad and Classic Controllers. The cross is pretty large, and while the buttons don’t click, they feel super sturdy and responsive, unlike the mushy d-pads on Gamecube or Switch Pro. I’d say it’s on par with the NES/SNES d-pads..
Maaaaaaaaaan I love this controller! I never had an issue with the joysticks at the top either
I honestly like this controller more than the Switch one. Used it until the triggers and bumpers all wore out on Bayonetta 2
Mmmmm..... It's a very good controller but better than the Switch Pro Controller? Please give more detail. :)))
@jumentoqueanima
I am not a fan of how the Switch pro controller feels materials wise. The triggers and buttons are mushy, and the sticks are a downgrade from the Wii U Pro controller iirc. I prefer clickiness in my pads
I personally use the Gullikit King Kong pro 2 for my switch, since it has hall effect sticks and proper clickey face buttons while liscensing the mold of the Xbox controller, so its high quality and ergonomic
@@ddr4v7z If they traveled more, then sure, but they don't for my tastes. Makes it feel stumpy and not particularly satisfying imo
You forgot the main reason for the Classic Controller (Pro) - playing Virtual Console games.
The Wii Pro Controller was more meant to play retro games for the Virtual Console than it was the newer mainline games.
The funny thing is that I use that controller to play majority of virtual consoles games I downloaded on my Wii U.
I absolutely love the anolog sticks uptop! Just feels way more comfortable than the offset!
"Not now, Mom, someone is wrong on the internet and it's Scott!"
Granted, perhaps the only time I use the Wii U Pro Controller is when the GamePad is out of battery and I can't find the charger, but even then, I'd just look for the charger since most games either require the GamePad or benefit from it anyway (Breath of the Wild without gyro-aim?), but at least in terms of how it feels, it's pure heaven.
That's the real travesty.
best controller ever. So bummed it never worked with switch.
If you hack your Switch you can add a plug-in that lets it connect to the Switch. Just careful around amiibo functions, some cause everything to crash.
@@tempanon8672There's also the good old 8bitdo adapter if you don't want to or can't mod your Switch
i remember people praising the Wii U Pro controller for the stick layout. i never owned one, and im sure it isn't too bad, but it always seemed like it would be really uncomfortable. back in 2017, i saw some people lamenting that the Switch Pro controller was redesigned back the the diagonal layout, but that piece of hardware is divine. i feel my virginity slipping away just thinking about it
It's not the perfect controller for everything, but it makes some games work much better.
Scott's over here wondering why the older he gets, the longer his stuff lasts.
8:20 I refuse to believe this, I refuse to believe anyone would even suggest this as an idea
Oh boy, you have just seen a glimpse of Japan boy.
It was not a suggestion, it was an order by a true arteest
@Chronoflation If you don't abide by it, be ready to face a lawsuit
We'll settle this, 1v1-Walleye Warehouse *YOU GET THE RUBBER BAND CONTROLLER*
It actually worked decently well weirdly enough, provided you tied the controllers together tight enough so they didn't flop around lol
The switch pro has more issues so I wouldn't recommend you use it or anything, but man its battery life is pretty damn good
Meanwhile yea the dualsense controller is uniquely bad
the ps5 controller has crazy amounts of hardware that justify the battery life, the ps4 controller though.....
@@ellie_is_jellieThe PS5 controller is almost a $100. That is insane.
The sticks on top was awesome
imo best controller layout and most comfortable, oh and that back is so sexy
I remember this glitch with the Pro Controller that when you went to the home menu sometimes the control stick would drift north east on the menu and you'd either have to re-pair the controller or reset the console. I can't believe they never fixed that issue.
I love your takes. They feel fresh and real. I like how you make fun of things like the "big hands" people. XD
idk.. im a little offended as a "big handed" people..
The best controller.
Everybody else: switch 2!!
Scott: "WiiU controller" 🙌
When you take into account the Switch Pro Controller's terrible D-pad, worse battery life, and insane price tag, I'd argue we've regressed a bit.
@@uponeric36another comment mentioned this, apparently Linux has support for it
The stick placement is what makes it the GOAT fps controller for me
Every push you make every move you make I'll be watching you

Absolute cinema
4:17 That, my friend, is called ageing.
Welcome to the club.
Part of the reason the battery life was so good not just the lack of some features like a gyro. But the fact it uses the exact same battery as a 3DS
Find yourself someone who loves you the same way Scott loves talking about anything Wii U related ❤
this is legit an S tier controller for me I know everyone doesn't love the design of having the two sticks at the top but for me its just PERFECT for shooters.
I knew 2024 couldn't come to a proper close without another Wii U video
I really like this controller and yes I actually used it a lot
the wii u pro controller owns you.
plus it's the greatest controller design ever made.
Before Nintendo does anything, they ask themselves _”What if we made it bad in some unfathomable way?!”_ and then they do that.
I find the dual raised analogues on the pro controller to be so comfortable and it feels like the Steamdeck took the stick location inspiration from the Wii u too
Wii U Pro Controller was peak, better than ANY other controller of all time.
I got a ZombiU Wii U at launch, came with a black Pro Controller. Was amazing having that at launch, an adult game bundled with a new Nintendo console
I picked this controller up fairly recently. I never owned one until this year, and I now actively go out of my way to play retro games on Wii U when I have the option because of it. No doubt in my mind that it's the best controller for retros, and it isn't even close.
I never minded this analog stick placement. looks weird at first but I probably clocked around a thousand hours in monster Hunter with this thing
Wasn’t pro enough to save the Wii U
Also not pro enough to work decently on PC
The Atari 7800 was called a pro system, and that didn't help sales.
@@KoopaKid660 what? i use this controller with mayflash dongle, it's perfect on pc
@BugsyFoga Wow...rude.
@ just pointing out facts
wee bit odd that there was motion control support considering it is a wii remote at heart.
I really like the buttons and Dpad in the middle bc I got big ass hands so the controller feels bigger when I get to fully outstretch my fingers to use em, also the sticks being at the top are good for fps games which isn't that useful on Wii U but the Steam Deck supports the Pro Controller natively
Great thing about this one, it works on anything you'd want to use it on with the 8bitdo adapter. You can pretty much play any game with it.
For MK8D (with an adapter) it’s the best controller for a big session, because the A boutons is perfectly placed !
This is also my dedicated controller for PC, I love it so much, the only real downside for me is the lack of gyro.
this is my favorite controller of all time
The Wii U pro controller is my favorite controller of all time, to the point where I use an adapter that lets me use it on switch and PlayStation. I know I’m rare but I love the stick placement and how light it is!
This controller was so close to perfection, they just had to ruin the triggers like that.
I always wanted one of these
You need it!
you really dont
@ YES YOU DO
I bought three of these
I love this controller and it's so cheap at retro game stores and I've stockpiled many of them. Feels great in my large hands. I use it on Switch, PS3, PS4, and PS5 with adapters.
the gpd win 3 also has the sticks at the top, apparently to keep them from blocking your thumbs from touching the keyboard and touchscreen
i wouldnt be surprised if the wii u gamepad has them along the top for the same reason
and from there, id argue it makes sense for the pro controller's sticks to be at the top, to match the arrangement from the gamepad
I remember rubber banding a wiimote to the Wii U pro controller to play the 2 player mode in Splatoon. What a crazy time. lol
the worst part of right stick up top is; due to games like FPS games. Think about what button would normally be reload and jumb and that they're usually the closest to the stick in a standard configuration. but with stick up top, they're the buttons that are the furthest away.
Yeah, the camera stick not being on the bottom is a damn war crime 😂
I like the design!
