Let's talk cardstock basics + how to cut card base and layers and get all your questions answered! This is part 3 of my Card Making for Beginners series.
Knowing cardstock basics is the 3rd essential item when making cards. We have already talked about stamps, ink...and now on to cardstock!
I get asked all the time, “how do you make card bases?”, or “How do I cut cardstock for cards?” Then there are the questions about the difference in Stampin’ Up!’s ‘regular’ whisper white cardstock vs. thick whisper white. Let’s chat about all of that today.
Cardstock Basics: How to Cut Card Bases, Layers & More ~ This video is filled with cardstock cutting tips that will help all of you beginner card makers, and hopefully teach you something new if you have been paper crafting for awhile. I throw out lots of numbers, and it may be confusing, but watch to the end as I think it will all come together and make sense.

Ty! Newbie cardmakers need a total breakdown of how and where to begin! Very much appreciate this.
You're so welcome!
Pretty cards. Nice to know the sizes.
"mountain in the middle" is the only way I can remember that the ridge goes inside the card, Jackie. Thanks for the great tips, as usual.
I'm anxious to go find your other videos. You always manage to explain things well (even if in this case it took a minute to get around it). I know I'd get myself tongue tied trying to talk it through. I have to say it's nice to see you have an imperfect moment, because it just helps to show we're all human and it can happen. I have to admit, some rulers confuse me with lots of lines in between vs just a few. And I don't read them well. I usually count X number of lines past a 1/4, 1/2 or 3/4.
Another helpful video. I have been folding my cards the wrong way. I'm so glad I found this series!! Thanks so much.
After reading the comments I also am going to say Thankyou for reminding me, an old carmaker on how to fold the cardstock with the bump inside.
Thanks Jackie! Very helpful.
Much appreciated. Need to know these measurements as a Newbie in Card-Making...Thanks a million, Ms. Jackie.
Jackie, even though I have been stamping for a number of years I love to go back and review basics sometimes or any other videos you have done! Thanks so much for all your hard work!
You are so welcome! I hope you picked up some new tips here!
It all makes sense now. Thank you
Thanks Jackie! I am new in card making and all your videos are very helpful. Your cards are beautiful!!
Thanks for taking time to share
Your cards and video.😀
Scoring first then cut. What a great tip; saves a step
Thankyou Jackie ! Quite a bit to remember there, but can always refer back if needs be. Here's hoping !
Thanks, for card making information.
This has been so helpful, thank you so much. I haven't made cards for years, and thought I'd start again, and for the life of me, I couldn't work out how to measure for the bases and layers. And the folding after scoring was helpful too, as I think I used to fold the wrong way. Awesome, thanks so much.
I'm so happy to hear this was helpful for you!
So helpful, thank you💞
I am still binge watching only because we are leaving our snowbird S. Texas home for our Missouri home this week. We live in a house in the woods on a river and do not have access to intranet, barely any phone service. So I’ll miss your upbeat videos but will watch when I can and look forward to catching up this Fall. Thanks so much for all of your tutorials. Time to pack up my toys for the trip back North.
Jackir= Great information for the beginners & a refresher for us older stampers! lol Thanks for sharing !
Thank you Jackie. That's a great Video
Thank you Jackie ✨
Awesome!
It was fun watching this older video of your younger self.
Hahah! Old vide, but still relevant content!
You made it so much easier than just math. Thank you. Also, I am glad to explained the correct way to fold the score.
I'm so glad these tips were helpful for you!
A great video. Thank you.xx
Thanks so much...great tips💖
It was great!
Thanks for this video I'm a newbie to card making so this really helps me! I'll be watching all of your videos!😇
TYFS❣️ Great tips
I have been making cards for years but you have finally made me remember to fold the card so the bump is on the outside!! Why is that soooooo hard to remember? Thank you!!
Ellen Gates didn’t she just say the bump or hump goes on the inside? I’m new so just got confused.
Do you have a certain quantity for your precut bases? Like what colors and sizes of bases and layers do you like to have cut and ready to go on hand? This info would be helpful to a lot of newer card makers I believe. 😉👍🏻 thanks for such clear and helpful videos, as always!!
I've only recently done laying so this was a great idea.
Glad I found this. These tips are so helpful.
I'm so glad this is helpful to you!
This is exactly what I needed. Thank You.
You're welcome!
Folding tip was helpful. The rest was super confusing but I think watching your other video will help. However, seeing the examples at the end helped a bit show what you were trying to get across! Now to watch the other video. Thanks.
Great thank you
Thank You for your help. The card that I was trying to make turned out to be only a frame. I appreciate your help
Glad I could help!
I am so pleased that I found this video today I have been struggling with my cutting and sizing. I feel stupid now because it's all so easy thank you so much I have subscribed and I'm looking forward to looking at more of your videos👍💕🥰🐶🇬🇧🇬🇧
I'm glad you found this video helpful and Maureen, don't feel stupid--LOTS of people struggle with these things (that's why I created this video) and sometimes our brains just need a little help to think about things slightly different. You've got this!
Thank you so very helpful
You are so welcome! Glad you found it helpful.
Yes, this was confusing but did make sense and helped! lol
great video , would of liked to see where the 1/8 is on stamping up cutter
I'm not a beginner but still enjoyed your video!
Great tips! Also I always got confused what weight of paper should be using. I have 110 lbs, 65lbs and designer paper and pretty thin ones too
Hi Jackie....
My biggest mistakes come from trying to cut down directional paper.
Good video
I long time ago make a sample of each layer. Different colours. Size printed on each layer. Tuck the layers inside
Tuck rack layer inside a card.
Glad this was helpful to you!
I want to make the layers template, but could not find the measurements on your site. Great idea!
Love the 2 tick marks comment. I say the same thing. Great video
This was great. A tutorial on different size cards would be great to see for beginners.
@@KlompenStampersJackieBolhuis The post was exactly what I needed to see. Do you have any tutorials or ideas on 5x7 cards?
@@KlompenStampersJackieBolhuis The 4-1/2×9 is my favorite. I can see that as a masculine card which is what I am working on. Thanks😙
Thank you. I never knew how to fold the card. What went inside the mountain or the valley.
Thank you for sharing. Can you do envelopes too?
Great video... for the card with the birds' nest... did you cut the white panel first and then stamp, or stamp & then cut?
❤️❤️❤️
Thanks!
Love your SIP concept - Stamps, Ink, and Paper. No, cutting dimensions were not confusing, just add 1/4 or 1/8 to you basic layout. Thank you for sharing.
Not confused at all, Jackie! It's simple: 1/8 smaller gives you en edge of 1/16 all around - very pretty
Hi, Jackie: What is the weight of the white cardstock and the green cardstock that I should be using? Thank you!
Honestly, I do not know. It is from Stampin' Up! and a nice heave cardstock. If you email me I can look it up and find out for you.
I was taught by a former SU demonstrator that “the hump goes inside the card, because you’ll get arrested if you hump outside!”
Oh my goodness. I have never heard that before. But I can't stop laughing now!! 😁😅🤣🤭
Because the whisper white & lvory card stock are designed to be much smoother than all of the other stampin up cardstock. Your little saying is only true for the cardstock. The whisper white and ivory get to hump outside. It is a much denser paper but that's all I remember.
LOL
I have always had issues with the fold. I usually just score then fold without flipping so it folds towards the valley, however I find depending on the cardstock I sometimes get cracks on the fold. I just paused your video and did a few folds on dark cardstock and folded to the mountain side and valley side. I found that folding to the mountain side does seem better. I must remember to take this extra step. Thanks.
What size card does this recipe wind up being?
Hi Jackie! You were saying in your video to "keep your blades sharp". How? Is there a way to sharpen blades once it starts going dull?
I mean instead of replacing the blades, is there a way to sharpen them?
Thank you!
Okay….so for the layering it is always 1/8th inch bigger or smaller. Got it!
1/8" is always my go to! But sometimes that math isn't always the easiest, so 1/4" is good to!
Can you tell me what the lb. weight is for the Whisper White basic & the heavier weight card stock?
Thank you!
What will make the blade last longer? I only cut cardstock and DSP and yet within a few weeks my blade leaves jagged edges :( I have a Fiskars slide cutter
Cleaning your cutting track helps.
Please Miss Jackie, how do I make a 5 X 7 card, cutting the cardstock? I'm so confused!
To make a 5X7 card you would ned a 10 x 7 piece of cardstock. That is not a size I typically make, but I am working on a blog post showing lots of different cards size options.
Where is the blog on cutting layers sizes
You can find that here: klompenstampers.com/learning-how-to-cut-cardstock-cards/
When picking cardstocks, what is the weight of the papers?
Gosh, I honestly do not know. I only use Stampin' Up! and their quality is the best so I don't really worry about the weight.
I never seem to have even edges when I fold my cards even with correct measuring and scoring tools - what am I doing wrong?
Gosh, I don't know. Make sure you are measuring correctly. Maybe try not scoring and just match the edges when you fold it over, then use the bone folder to get a nice crisp edge.
I could not find your guide for cutting paper you spoke of. I am a beginner.

💖💖💖🌹🤓
I am not able to find a templates
Sizes to cut your templates are in the blog post which is listed in the video description: klompenstampers.com/learning-how-to-cut-cardstock-cards/
But mot all beginners have the dye cut cricut etc
I was very confused you went so fast and maybe you should get closer to the numbers
I am not quite sure what you are confused on.... this blog post that goes with the video might help to see the visual diagrams: wp.me/p8rvpR-9qj
