    The market you were looking for at 12:27 is about 400 yards away, in the opposite direction you were walking to. It's tucked away, and while the market is huge, you can only reach it through a series of small alleyways. The market's been there for about 150 years, and the roads feeding into it were never upgraded. Essentially, from where you were at 12:27, you need to turn around and walk about five minutes, past the hotels and the railway ticket agency, turn right at the huge building shell that's under (perpetual) reconstruction that's across the street from the new skyscraper, and then left on the first alleyway. You'll end up in a huge, partly open-air market.

    The first locomotive you pointed out at the station is a Swedish design built under license in Romania by Electroputere. The second one you pointed out was purchased second-hand from the French national railway company (SNCF); it was built by Alsthom. Both designs date from the mid-1960s.

    11:44 this is former French SNCF BB 25572, built in 1971 by Alstom. Regio Călători bought 13 of class BB 25500 second hand, together with fitting RIO sets and other classic French vehicles, like Caravelles.
    23:30 if you want a classic night train from Romania to Hungary try to catch IR 406 "Corona" Brașov 18:51 - Budapest-Keleti 9:55 (currently, it is being rerouted because of works on the Cluj - Oradea line), it still has an old Hungarian sleeper and couchette car built in the GDR plus dining car. Or catch an inner-Romanian sleeper (there are several long routes) some are still second-hand old western German DB cars.

    I've posted this comment before as you complain about the noise in every hotel you go to. Download some ambient noise to your phone ( thunderstorms ,rivers, train sounds) and play it through a Bluetooth speaker or your phone itself then you can override external noise with that. I use it at home and everywhere I go. Well done treating your lad to this trip , a nice adventure for him.

    • @birdsbodger
      @birdsbodger 2 месяца назад +3

      Will add to this to make it even simpler, if you have a music app like Spotify RUclips Amazon or Apple if you sign up to their service you can download ambient sounds from there, then simply play whichever sound one you choose on a loop all night. I prefer river sounds myself.

    • @inthepub
      @inthepub 2 месяца назад +4

      There are specialised white noise/ambient sound apps too which do the job without needing Spotify etc. I've been fortunate enough to never need them in a hotel but they are also very good at blocking out annoying people who talk on their phones for the entire length of a train journey!

    I went to Romania last October. Flew from Birmingham with Wizzair - not bad for a budget airline. I cut short my time in Bucharest because it was a bit hit and miss - things closed without notice, quite dirty and scruffy in places and downright scary in others. Once out of Bucharest, though, Romania was fantastic. Beautiful, friendly, amazing architecture, scenery, food, culture and wildlife - saw my first bear in the wild. I would definitely go back but give the capital a miss.

    • @tonycasey3183
      @tonycasey3183 2 месяца назад +5

      @@KartoffelHundin Essentially, I would say "stay in the tourist areas of the city". I went to Piaţa Obor, a huge market. It was lovely, interesting and everyone was friendly. I decided to walk back to the city centre and had to go through an area where five men followed me and (appeared to) get reinforcements, as two other guys ahead, grossed the street and started to come towards me. I jumped on a tram before they converged on me and they began yelling at me as the tram pulled away.
      The old town at night feels like you have to keep your wits about you. I saw pickpockets and locals scamming tourists.
      I stayed in the north of the city in an area called Baneasa. Nice and safe as well as handy for the airport.
      Everywhere I went out of Bucharest felt very safe.

    that railway museum, it said on the door it is open Wed to Sun so that is why it was closed. If you ever visit Bucharest again, I suggest you try just walking around some of the old neighborhoods with houses, in Cotroceni area, around Dorobanti area, near Universitatii square and so on, those are the remnants of pre Soviet Bucharest. That Mall you went to is a mall not far from where I live, the first real mall in Bucharest, there's some much bigger ones now. As someone born and still living in Bucharest, the old town is the worst part. Also, near the main attractions in Brasov/Bran area, there's a really beautiful area most foreigners don't go to, way more beautiful than Bran, it's the area right next to Bran, the mountain villages on the hills(Magura, Pestera, Fundata, Sirnea), easily accessible with a taxi and there's a lot of nice walks and hikes around Zarnesti(there's a really old train from Brasov to Zarnesti btw). CFR trains aren't worth it generally if there's a different option( the private operators have half the price for at least the same if not slightly better comfort). Oh and everything(CFR and private operators) can be booked online, CFR has an app, the others on the sites. If you'd like towards Hungary, there's the Astra Trans Carpatica train to Timisoara that is modern and nice, then surely there's connections)

    When are you going to visit Rotterdam? A lot of things to see that would fit in your video. Things like the cube houses.
    Let me know! :-)

    Top tip: When travelling, take a pillow case from home with you. That's soft and smells of your home laundry, so it's comforting and helps you sleep when away from home. ❤

    Nice video Scott and Blair. Could I ask you a favour Scott? When you post currency conversions, could you include EUR alongside GBP and USD? Many thanks.

      The EUR is usually just about 10% more than the USD so I wouldn't bother doing both conversions either.

    I have to say as soon as I heard you were there
    on a Monday - I thought
    ALL the museums will be shut!
    and they were.
    I am interested in Romanian language as it is a Romance language
    so seeing how much as someone who has lived and worked
    in France and Italy could understand
    and I was pleasantly surprised
    though the grammatical endings were a problem.
    How did you find the language?
