  • As the name suggests, pre-flight checks are done prior to takeoff. We are determining whether the aircraft is ready for a safe flight. A written check list is used to make sure that all important tasks are done; items on the list include checking for properly-working systems, fuel, oil, etcetera.
This is just a casual video walking through and breaking down the preflight checklist for a Cessna 152. This video is tailored to student pilots training with CFI David of the Flying Twenty Flight Club at RHV but will be made public in case others may find it useful. Also, note that we are going a little slow in this video; an experienced, focused pilot who is familiar with the aircraft could easily perform a thorough preflight in less time. If we find that we are missing anything or corrections need to be made, we'll include those updates in this description. You can also leave a comment below and let us know.
Edit: while you are checking this area of the aircraft (around 20:49 in the video), you should also ensure that the nose gear strut is showing 2-3 inches of chrome.

@ 11:26 "Here we have the elevator". You didn't think we were paying attention did you? Preflight interrupted by the arrival of the fuel truck, leads to a break in flow/concentration. This is a good illustration why one may want to consider restarting a checklist (or flight related check) after an interruption occurs. Perhaps not necessary here, but when attention is divided and we are doing multiple things at once it is easier for errors to occur.

Weed abatement. Same here - did PPL at 23N. Things may have changed now, though.

Why is there a red dot on the tire?

At 13:51 a red dot is visible on the exterior of the tire. The red dot is put there intentionally by the tire manufacturer. The red dot marks the place on the tire, where the valve stem from the tire tube should line up on the tire when the two are joined. On the tire tube the valve stem will be the heaviest part of the tire tube. When the tire tube is placed inside the tire the heavier inflation valve stem it is lined up with the red dot that indicates the "lightest weight area" of the tire in an effort to balance out the tire, tube and wheel assembly.
