It looks like Molly knew what she was doing. She did a great job. Your animals look great, it is easy to see they are cared for properly. I like your videos, they have given me many ideas I have tried on our small farm.
Now that's how you take a sheep to the baabaa shop. Jokes aside, it's impressive how you aren't so rough on the sheep, and the coats after shearing look so nice and fine like a freshly cleaned carpet.
Molly has jujitsu skills for sheep, you can tell she knows exactly what she is doing. Nice that she explains the positioning and what it does, really great stuff. She is a true professional.
Glad Molly addressed how not to pull the skin or wool up so the sheep aren’t cut by the shear. Once I watched a sheep shearing contest in which one of the shearers cut a sheep on the neck. Not surprisingly the sheep started to get a little panicky after that. Fortunately the cut wasn’t deep. Anyhow, nice work by Molly and interesting to see the ewes’ look post-shearing.
That['s gotta feel SO much better. And it would be fun to collect the fleeces for a few years from each of them, and then have them skirted and spun! The colors are lovely and would make such nice natural colored yarns for weaving, knitting or crocheting!
That is a lot of hard work shearing sheep. All done without a stand to hold the sheep. Molly has a strong back to be able to hunch over and work that trimmer so well.
I could never be a sheep shearer... because I’d lose my job almost immediately for spending too much time informing shorn sheep that they are now “Nakey.”
I’m from the city but I’ve always been casually interested in owning a vegetarian farm (no killing, just harvesting) and these videos are really fun to watch for me! :)
About a decade ago, I was at a certain central Ohio university, in a class, talking about wool, with sheep all around. Invited, I walked into the pen in front of me and in a moment already had one of the biggest laying back against my legs. 7 minutes later, the fleece in one piece, the director of the farm who had brought the sheep asked how the hell I had done it on that particular sheep...... as I continued to sing and had another sheep ready to go..... Yes, sing..... I always sang to my goats and they never failed to let down their milk...... This is what is lost in today’s world....
Ba Ba Black Sheep Have you any wool! What a lovely Fleece! Also, it is SO nice to see a gentle sheerer! The last time I saw a sheep get sheared...it involved some wounds from rushing! Wool is supposed to keep slugs away from your leafy crops...So if you have a garden with hungry slugs...
I had the same thought. Many of the sheep on my friend's farm had lots of bloodied skin and the finished coat was patchy mixed lengths. Dan your sheep turned out as good as our dog when he goes to the groomer.
She was AWESOME!!!! Wow! Great job and super cool to watch. I bet the sheep feel better too. Though, it’ll be hard to pick Annabelle out of the crowd now. LOL TFS! God Bless ~Lisa
Professionals make it look so easy! What a difference in the looks of the sheep, especially that spotted one (not sure of her name). I'm sure they'll thank you in the heat of summer.
She was amazing how in control she was. The sheep never seemed stressed. On a separate note, we haven't heard from Emmet in a month. I know he was discouraged by the poults he was losing, hope all is well on Goat Berry Farm. He is in my thoughts and prayers.
So cool! could you do a video where you go over all your new lambs and talk about which ones you think are breeding quality, the percentage of Dorper and E fresian in them ect? It would be really interesting.
At 6:46 that sheep has a perfect heart! Talk about wearing your heart on your sleeve (shoulder!) Too cute! Did Molly or you (Dan) comment on that while she was shearing?
I was wondering what you were going to do with those wooly sheep. BTW, I heard some people use subpar wool as nesting material for brooding birds. However, I'd love to see if you all would experiment with cleaning and processing the wool for say a rug or animal blanket.
The steel she’s talking about is called a gut and short gut, and they cut the wool a hell of a lot better then an electric hand piece. It’s gotta be going at least 3300 to cut the wool or it tears it and ruins the comb and cutter real quick as hell as not feeling good for the sheep.
Irk what was your family problem but I do hope it is better n if u could text me I would like to know what the problem was ...that us if u don't mind telling me...I've been with u since b4 Justin Rhodes came to visit u....but didn't c u as often i do ( or did) in the last year plus ....stay healthy/happy/n active/ love all your vlogs ....very informative !!! Very interesting video! Molly is a real pro at it!! Will you sell the wool to a spinner, or? Also...will you learn to do this in the future or continue to hire it done? TFS
The wool got soaked in the rain so it'll just be mulch. I think it would be neat to learn to shear like that but I'm not sure I have the time to hone that skill.
I have never had sheep before (looking into it though) the squirming looked like a combination of losing some balance, and a "wow that feels different".
Would LOVE to know what brand of shears Molly recommends! We decided to do our one sheep (Friesian/Dorset cross) ourselves this year, bought a decent looking pair off Amazon and they were a total nightmare! They wouldn't even make it through the top layer, let alone getting a nice, close shear like she's getting here. No amount of oiling or adjusting the tension made a difference. And my arm is still shaking trying to type this from the vibration after 15 min of use. Halp!! (Pretty please!)
Dan, do your Khatadin ewes provide you with any milk at all? If so, can you tell the difference in taste or quality from the Friesian mixes? I have always figured (planned) on just having hair sheep (American Blackbellies) and getting what milk I could from them as I am the only milk drinker in my house. However, if hair sheep milk is not so good....I need to develop plan B.
i live in North Eastern Washington. I learned to shear back in the 80s but only sheared a few times. I have been wondering what month in the spring would be the best for shearing? Do you bath them before shearing? IF not, how do you wash the wool?
I don't have it done for a wool product so there is no bathing or washing. A sheep rancher I'm friends who lives in Ione, WA shears her flock in Feb/March
@@TheGrassfedHomestead i have a couple people that say they will come help me shear my girl hopefully in March. its only 30 degrees here today and we could loose power do to this storm. my ewes are clean bellied and seem to nurse their lambs well enough. I'm more worried about them staying warm after shearing since our winters dont end until late March or early April.
I always wondered why you had some wooly sheep and some not but now I know. Its about time for me to shave my fluffiest buck goat. He is older than the rest and cant deal with the heat and happens to be the stinkiest as well as fluffiest. I would rather sheer a sheep than shave a goat anyday

Thank you for showing humane, efficient shearing. The sheep look like they had no trauma whatsoever..
She is amazing! She looked no bigger than the sheep and had total control of them. Impressive, for sure.
What a sweet couple, I enjoyed watching that video so much. I wish them much success xxx
I'm glad someone is able to do that while being gentle to the animal. That's how everyone should do it. Good job!
Molly really knows what she's doing ! Awesome job ! 👍🏻

she is a nice ewe

That's a good friend to have.
That looked like a combination of a Turkish bath massage and the first day of boot camp. :)
haha! Indeed!
6:41 sheep with a black heart. So beautiful.
That second spotted sheep was really nice..Molly you are very unique for sure!!

I spy a heart on Penelope's shoulder!
one of my favorite parts of the video was that surprise heart!!
Okay this handspinner is drooling... what a lovely color she is
Great job Molly. Dan what a differance. I enjoyed warching her work. She is very gentle with the animals. Very nice.
Annabell was beautiful! That chocolate brown for her wool omg

have learned more from Molly than from many other videos, great job
Does a neat job shearing . . . cheers.
Nice to see Molly back in business! She used to do my sheep before starting a family. Very nicely done!
That girl is freaking awesome!!! She manhandled that ewe like it was a stuffed animal!!

The second sheep she sheered had a black heart on her and it transferred to the fleece. It was up by her shoulder. Amazing
That was great. I loved how Molly shared tips..especially the finger in the mouth. Great site..loved your music too!!!
Thanks Meg!

She'll grow it back ;)
Good job .. Shearing is a relief for sheep.
@Nonya Biz but all the wool they produce is worth it. As long as they are treated well it is fine.
Thanks so much for this demonstration. I'm new to sheep ownership and found the tips for handling very helpful!
Glad it was helpful!
Professionals make it look so easy! What a difference in the looks of the sheep, especially that spotted one (not sure of her name). I'm sure they'll thank you in the heat of summer.
That's Penelope :)
Great video done by an expert who made us feel we can do it too..thank you so much for showing us how it's done! :)
They look so svelte without the fleece. A beautiful job and nice handling. 👍👍👍
Ohhh that was satisfying to watch all that wool come off. Your girls look great with less wool..lambs are growing fast too..
Beautiful! I have never seen wool so seamlessly shorn. Thanks for sharing!
I LOVE Penelope's coloring!!! Quite a vast difference from my boring ol Suffolk x Hamp. crosses!!!
My goodness you did a good job on that I wish you lived close to us
penelope has a heart shape spot!! Cute!

I noticed it but didn't say anything. Molly didn't mention it
So awesome! Wish you were in FL to sheer my (future sheep)!
Nice work Molly
Great job Molly.
It's like shaving off a rug! I wonder how much weight each one lost?
good question!
Really wish I could have her teach me how to shear! I'm in Iowa and have shetland sheep, they are a wool sheep breed. Great video!😄
now its hard to see them from the others but i bet they feel great
Good job Molly, I'm about to shear my Dorpers for the first time .....I'll let you know how I do ! Regards from the Hunter Valley in Australia.
Managed to shear 1 and a 1/2 dorpers...won't be stealing your job ! My girls were not very cooperative !

She did an awesome job shearing! Just like in the pro videos! Did the lambs still recognize their mothers, they looked so different and smaller! lol
They did! I was wondering the same thing but they also go by smell so they went right to their mother
Cool video!!!!!
The baby was like "Mom, can you shear that guy's beard first?"
long live the homesteaders!

It began pouring rain as we were finishing up and the wool got soaked. I think it'll just be mulch :(
That was me going to the barber for the 1st time after they opened back up

Yes! Thank you!
My hair sheep is bread with dorper which dose not sheed the wool so she is normally su post to sheed it but has not so I have to start sheering her

Can they bite when you are shearing
What size of blade or comb are you using?
Sometimes the sheep really squirmed; are animals ticklish like people?
no, their hides are way less sensitive than our skin
Thank You, good point. However many animals have there spots to be rubbed, and I have seen videos of orangatang babies giggling on Johnny Carson.
