- Wool was once one of New Zealand’s most exported products. But thanks to trade wars and synthetic fabrics, wool prices have plummeted. It’s left farmers with bales of wool they can’t sell and herds they can barely afford to shear. Some farmers are stockpiling wool. Some are turning to forestry and getting out of wool altogether. Business Insider follows the owners of Ruanui Station as they shear their 25,000 sheep and fight to keep New Zealand’s wool industry alive.

A sheep naturally has a tail, but it's cutoff as you see in the video, and will even endure "mulesing" look it up. this is a cruel industry.
@@joannot6706 there's a reason sheep's tails are cut off, the wool on it can grow too long and get covered in feces and attract flies, bugs and disease carrying organisms. Leading to them actually start decomposing at the tail, its easier to cut the tail off when they are newly born before the bone gets to hard and too painful to be just removed. It's similar to clipping newborns pigs ears to mark their litter and age. Sometimes the tail is cut too short and it can cause problems, but the majority of the time it's done well. These sheep farmers know exactly what they are doing and it's clear they are doing it well
@@joannot6706 if you don't remove a sheep's tail it will likely die of fly strike. They mentioned this in the video.

I love how the sheep are actually pretty comfortable and chill when getting their haircuts, it's like they're used to them and actually look forward for it lmao
Yeah as a shearer you learn stuff like how to handle them in a way to reduce stress and pain. Watch how they even drag them, its always on their side and always at their brisket and one leg for less pull of sensitive areas. A good shearer is one who makes it effectless and that's what you call a gun shearer.

I grew up watching my dad sheer sheep on his own every summer. Hard work that many could never do. Now it’s not even worth selling anymore. It’s incredibly sad

Wool : expensive, but great
Synthetic : horrible, not environmentally friendly, but cheap
Cotton : Affordable and biodegradable, pog
Also hemp, linen, and bamboo make great natural fibers.
For clothing, especially when talking about use in the outdoors, wool is best. Cotton loses all of it's insulation value when wet and will actually cause you to get colder while wool will retain that insulation. All materials have their best use so I hope the farmers hang in there.

Ah, but even with affordable "cotton", you have to watch out for poly-cotton blends, that act more like polyester than cotton.
My Wife and I always purchase a nice (something) on each anniversary. On year 2 we purchased an expensive wool rug (have no recollection of what we paid I just remember it being an expensive purchase for this time in our lives). This rug was once in our den and is now under our kitchen table, perhaps not the best place for a nice rug, nonetheless we've had the rug for close to 30 years now and it still looks great. We also bought a cheap rug somewhere along the line...it was crap, we keep it 6 or 7 years then sent it to the landfill. Moral of the story...you get what you pay for...spend the extra cash and it'll last forever.
I lived in Australia for 8 months, loved products made out of NZ wool. In Europe we should tax synthetic made carpets to make NZ wool more appealing

Why? Why artificially manipulate the market to benefit one foreign country over another? Maybe NZ should negotiate such a deal themselves.
The tax idea would only make it harder one someone else. Instead of a video showing how wool businesses are suffering, we would start to see videos on how synthetics factory workers are suffering.

It is absolutely foolish to believe that we completely understand that system. It is even more foolish to believe that we are truly damaging or destroying the world. We are simply changing it. Change is inevitable. Change isn't always bad. Plastic was considered bad because it isn't biodegradable. But the world is strong and can change faster than we can predict. Plastic is becoming biodegradable. The world is learning how to degrade it. So all that leaves is the greenhouse gases for us to consider. Wool production releases a ton of green house gases. I mean I could be wrong but sheep's fart right?
This is sad. I hope the 🐏 sheep industry recovers. I'll be more mindful now when buying clothes, rugs and fabric

Based on the video, if the shaven wool is not sold, and there is a loss of business, these wool producers will have to sell the sheep as meat instead and close down the entire industry. And that will mean we have even more lower quality fabrics on the market

@@daryldaniels4860 Some farmers train the dogs themselves, and they also somewhat train themselves by watching the other dogs. Quite often they will buy dogs from a trainer or shepherd. A good dog will cost around $3,000 - 4,000 USD
Some dogs are much smarter than most humans.

@@CHLOCHLOLP agreed. Sheep are bred to overgrow their wool, so NOT shearing them causes extreme overgrowth that can lead to joint issues, pain and infection.

I've sheared a sheep and they are momentarily distressed but as soon as they're back in the field they get back to sheep living.

I'd be marketing it towards gardeners, coarse wool is one of the best slug repellents out there and I pay good money for it here in the UK

Only problem is that as offshore demand increases, the prices for the locals will increase as well and also their capacity to produce the stuff can only expand so much.
@@scootergrant8683 offshore demand is not increasing. People love buying homemade (Australian Made) products. I only buy Australian produce (fruits and veg) and I try to source Aussie stuff whenever possible.

Yea thats all well and good saying that, totally different matter when you go broke and cant afford to pay the mortgage on your farm or the wages to pay shearing contractors. These guys arent living the life of luxury, they life a bloody hard life wondering if the next year will be their last
Wool is the best winter clothing. No synthetic comes even close. In -20 C° the only thing you need is one wool shirt and a windresistant jacket on top and you'll be warm. If you want that with only synthetics you have to pay a fortune for the best kinds of polyester jacket.
A good wool shirt cost around 50-100 dollars + one windresistant jacket for about 20-50 dollars. A winter polyester quality jacket cost around 200-1000 dollars. The maximum for the wool option is about 150 dollars while the minimum for a polyester jacket is 200 dollars.

They're breeding sheep to grow too big of coats, so big they need to be sheared twice a year just to stay alive. I'm glad the wool industry is dying and I hope it never recovers.

italy production probably have exclusive contract with eu wool producers. So no global imported wool to eu on large scale.
Merino socks are brilliant for cold weather and comfy.
Italy used to have on the 90's Recycle wool industry at Pratto. The quality was impressive . The famous lambswool was recycled. Export was a success. On the 2000's China appear very aggressive dropping the prices with slavery.
Wool is very cheap in Europe and there will be tariffs on imports. Processors (likely in China) probably take a big profit

Well my husband is doing his part in helping, we have a wool rug in the living room and he has a TON of wool blankets, hats and shirts. He loves wool, I can't touch it, way to itchy but as a rug it can't be beat.

You are correct it's expensive and i have seen some items before and i decided it was not worth the price because I could buy cheaper.
But when I was doing that I didn't have the knowledge that this product last longer and its environment friendly.
I was not informed until now. So now I can see myself investing in the long term for my money and the environment.

Wool and Cotton feel so amazing. A lot of the cheap Synthetic stuff rashes my skin and other family members. My great aunts had about four mountain sheep they use to sheer and make some blankets out of! So the tail is normally removed because flies LOVE to breed eggs in there from the poop feeces that get stuck in the wool. Yes it does cause rot and a painful infection incredibly fast. (I asked them and they told me that’s how they lost their fifth sheep in the past from it) Good memories tho! The sheep were sweet hearts.

Or we could not breed sheep to have such enormous coats, that way we wouldn't need to shear them at all.
Only some ancient breeds maintain the ability to shed naturally. We cannot easily undo thousands of years of sheep breeding which has selected sheep specifically for their large coats and wool producing ability. Not shearing modern sheep breeds would in effect kill them via a multitude of ways.

Another alternative is turning it into something for gardeners. I've seen compressed wool pellets being used for Gardens as Pest Control and ground cover insulation because it breaks down as fertilizer. Add reusable shopping bags are on the rise they could definitely make a couple ton of those to ship out
It breaks down as a fertilizer? In how many decades? I highly doubt it a quick process because the material is harder than human hair.
@@singhmaster4 the primary purpose isn't as fertiliser in the garden - it's as a ground cover, a barrier to prevent frost or suppress weeds growing between the plants you want. But unlike plastic barriers, it breaks down and provides a little nitrogen to the soil when it does.
Alas, wool wouldn't be great for reusable shopping bags because it doesn't have much tensile strength - there's no wool equivalent of canvas. It's great for warmth and comfort, not so much for supporting loads.
You can but there's not enough value in it for the producer, those are normally made from the fleece offskirts which are low value.
I wear thick wool socks all year round,anything synthetic gives me stinky feet,wool allows your skin to breath no matter what the temperature.

Business Insider had a video on Cashmere being expensive about a year ago.
They should switch to raising cashmere goats, the price of their wool is still very expensive and profitable.
To be honest they should raise some local native animal that can produce textile fibres. It would be way more ecological than sheep and it would make a difference between them and other farmers. Let's think different! For the sake of the land and the people

I love Wool! I hope the New Zeeland's farmers recover from the pandemics. Aren't the synthetic fabrics using Wool in their productions? I could imagine a lot of new synthetic fibers being created with Wool.

The price is not a problem with investment, you pay a lot more buying a lot of bad quality, while a real wool one lasts much longer
Not to mention that it is manual labor, obviously it will be more expensive
I guess the only ways to increase the wool prices that come from sheep here in New Zealand is if some synthetic products are becoming less popular, or if they've been banned, or perhaps if there are really popular, good quality & affordable products that are made entirely out of New Zealand wool

Wool wall insulation is growing … especially in RVs . I guess that is the future. We had to diversify way back when the world stopped making many tartan kilts too.

I hope the wool market will boom again, I think people are becoming more conscious of the affect on the environment so will ditch the synthetic. I for one prefer wool, we have wool mattresses, duvets and pillows they’re amazing! If only they could ship more out to the U.K. 👍
There are plenty of natural plant fibers that you don't have to resort to exploiting sheep. Cotton, hemp, linen, and bamboo are even more environmentally friendly.

My family owns sheeps and when im shearing the sheeps it takes about 15 minutes for a single sheep so its not as easy as it seems
Wool is a lot better.... plus it doesn’t hurt the sheep so a win win in my humble opinion
We have 203 heads here in New Mexico, my grandparents use to have over 1000 but laws were put out to only have a certain number. We had 2 years worth of wool because of the trade wars too but finally sold em all.
All I can say is, send all that wool to the great white north, is freezing up here and it’d be great to wear a nice warm sheep wool sweater made out of sustainable materials while we help our friends down in NZ
If sheep can't shear naturally how do they survive in the wild or back then
Humans selectively breeded them so there coats would not stop growing. before that the normal sheep would be fine to survive in the wild.
You can google the sheep that got lost and found 6 years later. It had 30 sweaters worth of wool on it. They say if they haven't found it, it would die in the next couple of weeks from infection caused by so much wool. Poor sheep. But also lucky at the end of the day.

I am in the upholstery business, and depending on the furniture working with a wool fabric can either make the job a lot easier, or it can turn it into a nightmare. It is rarely in the middle ground.

In the military we say "cotton kills" because it doesn't insulate against cold, especially when it gets wet. It also takes on odor quickly, making it a poor choice for undergarments. Wool on the other hand is softer, insulates, breathes just as well, is tougher, and has fire resistance. That's why we love sock brands like Darn Tough and Smart Wool. Wool may lose its value to some people, but it'll always have value for us guys getting our hands dirty

Wool is a superior material,stays warm when wet. I seen fishermen wear wool mittens in winter around their gear and their hands stayed warm.
