I am still in the practice stage. A bit fearful of committing to free motion quilt on a quilt. I love your attitude and you are so right.. when it’s all done it’s amazing and will keep someone warm 🥰
I don't know if you have ever done any professional teaching, but you are a very good instructor. You explain everything well and your demonstrations are clear and concise. Thank you for taking time to do this.
Hi! I hope you had a fun day! I spent my day in my sewing room getting a big project done and now I get to sit and watch your video while I make yarn. I hope you have a fabulous week ahead. Thank you for posting this video and sharing your positive energy.
Thank you, Kristen. I'm going to try this on a printed panel. I hadn't thought of that before, but having some lines to follow will be much easier than making it all up as I go along. Really useful tips for a not-confident beginner (at least in FMQ). Great video!
I am in love with ur channel im new at quilting I make clothes with stretch mostly but this is a whole new ball game for me thank u for ur help and ur hard work making these videos
Thank you, thank you, thank you, Kristen! I want so much to begin free motion quilting, but it scares me to death! I love this idea of using panels as practice pieces. I think I’ll just jump in!
Hi Kristen, this was really great of you to show. I’m just started working on a appliqué quilt and I was so intimidated to jump in because I am so critical of how I want it to turn out. In all honesty, I’m really liking the imperfections; it is giving the quilt a fun whimsical look. Putting too much thought in to it, I realize was such a waste of time. Thank you for showing that it’s ok to just jump in and try different ideas. 👍🏻😊
Thanks Jill! So glad you liked it. If we don’t try and make mistakes we’ll never get better. Thinking rarely helps me with a problem but trying things does! All the best with your project!
Thanks for the lessons. I have some Christine Camelli books I use for reference. I like to go for it and make small quilts for my cat and dogs, tablerunners, pillow covers, mug rugs. I just started to fmq a fall panel. What fun. It has a spooky tree and pumpkins. I love watching your process and how brave you are.
Great video Kristen and I really wish I could adopt your easy going attitude but I always get myself in a tizzy over the quilting part, even years down the line. What you’re saying makes total sense though. I find I can relax and make a reasonable job of a small piece but I get really hung up about potentially spoiling a quilt top which I’ve dedicated, usually, so much time and effort into precision piecing and I never seem to manage the weight and bulk of a big quilt to achieve the same results. Also, I’m always worried that the back won’t look as good even if I deliberately use a “busy” backing to hide the stitching. Obviously, I should try your method of quilting different designs in areas rather than trying to achieve perfection on an overall edge to edge type design. Some teachers suggest a glass of wine to relax into the process….maybe I should just have a few to rid myself of negative vibes🤭😂
Wine definitely helps! Also you could make some quick and easy quilt tops and make them the Guinea pigs for doing fmq on the whole quilt with different designs to see how you like it.
Thanks! I’ve started fmq too and it’s not perfect, but very fun. I have a hard time regulating the speed of the machine with my hands, but I’m not giving up. Thanks for the book recommendation too. I’m going to look into it. Keep up the great videos!
You’ll get there! When I started I thought I couldn’t stop and had to continually stitch. When I realised I could just pause and regroup whenever I wanted it got a bit easier. Christina Cameli is amazing definitely worth checking out!
Thank you!! Great encouragement!!! I’ve made a 82x90 “I spy” type quilt- with long rows with blue between the rows- I actually do not like the blue fabric- it is thin. I was thinking about cutting the blue and replace it with a better quality, solid cotton fabric. Then “quilt”the solid before rejoining the rows - like a QAYG. It seems that QAYG type quilting would be better for me. - any ideas( anyone?). Practicing different FM on each strip of solids- what could happen? It’s a winter blanket anyhow, fun characters and scraps form every project for the grandchildren..
The little bobbles on the gloves sort of grip the fabric and make it easier to push it around. They are not essential but lots of people (including me) find they help!
Do you practice your free motion quilitng on a sample first or do you just go for it?
I should practice…but I don’t really
Sometimes it’s more fun to just start!
I practice on a sample first, to get in a rhythm and get the speed of the machine in synch with the speed I move the quilt sandwich.
Great advice!

Thanks so much! So glad the instructions make sense - because no I’m not a professional teacher!
That’s because she is honest . She also seems like a sweet person!
Thank you for showing the difference between real time and sped up. This is a great tutorial!
Thanks! So glad you liked it!
Goodness the block and the quilt at the end is gorgeous!!! Well done!
Thank you!!
That is one of the best vedios of free motion quilting I have seen thank you for making you giving me the confidence to try again .
Aw thanks so much for saying that - so glad it helped give you some confidence!! Go for it!

Yeah! Go for it! Nothing is ever as scary in real life as it is in our minds! And it’s all learning. You can do it!

I love Christina Camelli she is awesome! Your fall panel sounds like a great project too! Thanks so much for your comment and for watching!
I've used free motion a lot in the past for embroidery and also applique.
It’s great for appliqué isn’t it!
@@ScrapFabricLove indeed👍
I have always been afraid to try free motion, but am beginning to feel motivated thanks to your demo.
Like your style !
Thanks! It’s definitely fun once you lose the fear! You’ll do great!

This was really helpful. I like the idea of practicing on a scrappy strip quilt. Thank you! :-)
Glad it helped! Have fun with it!
Thank you
Everyone I know that does free motion quilting says the gloves make a huge difference.
SOOOOO BEE-utiful 🐞✌️🕉️❤️
Thank you!!

I always ‘practice’ on actual quilts. You never learn unless you try!
Why do you need quilting gloves?
The little bobbles on the gloves sort of grip the fabric and make it easier to push it around. They are not essential but lots of people (including me) find they help!
