Bravo Zulu Mike. What a privilege to parallel a small French flagged cruise ship. Happily this is US waters. If in Kuwait you'd be intercepted by the Kuwaiti Navy since the USS Cole bombing changed maritime security. We were hired by the US Army MWR Watercraft program, Camp Doha, Kuwait 🇰🇼. We were on a 27' fishing boat Al-Dhaen manufacturer. We were approaching the shipping channel to Al-Shuaba port when a very large US Army transport vessel started to exit and entered the shipping channel. We cut the throttles and was adrift when a Kuwait Navy fast patrol boat [not coast guard as this was all gray] hailed us to "heed to" with the ships horn and channel 16. After confirming our intentions and were not fishing in restricted waters [our lines were all in]. The Kuwait Navy ship turned and warned us to only proceed across the shipping channel after the US Army ship reached the last channel marker. I told my supervisor that Kuwaiti ship was going to ram us and split us in half if we were suspected criminals or terrorists. You could hear her diesel engines power up as she approached. We were all ready to abandon boat if needed. Quiet the experience
Bryon! Thank you so much for sharing such an incredible story with us. I am genuinely amazed by the level of detail you provided and how you brought us right into the moment. It is fascinating to think about the parallels between our experiences here and what you have gone through over in Kuwait, especially with the heightened maritime security since the USS Cole incident. Your story of navigating near the Al-Shuaba port and the encounter with the Kuwaiti Navy on that 27-foot Al-Dhaen fishing boat is nothing short of gripping. I can only imagine the adrenaline rush you must have felt when the Kuwaiti patrol boat started powering up its engines and coming toward you, not knowing what might happen next. Being ready to abandon ship at any moment must have been quite the experience, and your story really captures the tension of those kinds of situations. It is amazing to think how different things can be in various parts of the world. Here, we are lucky enough to share the waters with all kinds of vessels without much of a second thought, but your story reminds us that there are places where the stakes are much higher. The level of professionalism and vigilance you displayed in handling that situation, making sure you were clear of restricted waters and responding appropriately to the Kuwaiti Navy's hails, shows a deep understanding of the environment you were operating in. It is stories like yours that make this community so rich and engaging. It is not just about watching ships; it is about connecting through these shared experiences and learning from one another. I am really thankful for you taking the time to write all this out and sharing such a unique part of your life with us. It is a privilege to have someone like you contributing to our little corner of the internet.
Chuck, It was important to me that I put the time in responding to such a wonderful and well-crafted comment by our friend Bryon! I want him to know that I respect him, and he is exactly the type of person that should be hanging with all of us in this Boat Friends community all the time!
I see on the stern cabin area the words "Mata Utu". This is positioned directly below the ship's name. You can see this at 7:44 into the video. Mata-Utu is the capital of Wallis and Futuna, an overseas remote collectivity of France located in the South Pacific. This beautiful ship is named after the famous French explorer Samuel de Champlain, "The Father of New France".

In many respects Mike, I think this vessel is even cooler and more beautiful than the Viking ships Octantis and Polaris. The streamlined hull and stunning blue just does something for me!
@@vibewithmike Tbh I was hoping she you would capture a video of her lol wanted to see her close up. When I got a notification you posted an she was the vessel it made the entire day. I like personally really love her bow. Also idk if u seen my post down below some where but, I put some info about the last coal fired steam ship on the great lakes.
I thought it might be a good idea to put out a video so people can think about ships versus anything else going on during the week. Also, let us think about the weekend ahead. Another cruise ship will be arriving on Saturday.👍⛴️
That would be really cool if you could email me a photo of that. I would love to see that. I know you will agree, it’s stunning in person. mikems1mn@gmail.com
I did not hear the horn facing me, but I know you heard it, it was very loud from behind, what did it sound like as it was facing you. I know you will agree with me, that is one beautiful ship! Really sleek and the beautiful colors on it, and don’t forget that pool on the back. Thanks for the comment brother!⛴️👍👋
Mike---great photography and what a treat for all of us who were actually in Duluth to watch the LeChamplain entering, visiting and leaving the Duluth Harbor, as well as all of your boat friends viewing this video. Wonderful opportunity for everyone. Thank you for sharing this with us.
Mike, you out did yourself on this one! Simply fabulous. Your boat friends pontoon took us to parts of the harbor not typically accessible. What a stunning cruise ship. The beautiful lines. The stunning colors. Boy would I enjoy being a passenger on this vessel. Almost a 1-1 ratio of crew to passengers. A 4 course meal everyday. Unlimited beverages. Room service 24 hours/day. Can you imagine an underwater observatory, the Blue Eye? It's a lounge and bar. It's totally under the water line. At night it glows a pretty blue. Last year I saw her twin....the Le Bellot pass under the Port Huron Blue Water Bridge. My jaw about hit the ground it was so amazing to see pass on by. Thanks for your big time effort to produce this video Mike. It was so very well done.
Hey Chuck!! As usual, you also don't disappoint!!! Le Ballot, REALLY!!! What is a Blue Eye?? Have always been scared to go on a cruise.... need to be in control at all times, here....
@@elizabethw.8561 Hey there. The lounge is called Blue Eye because the inside is bathed in blue light which gets emitted through glass portholes ....which then glow in blue when viewed from outside the ship.
My friend Mike, a beautiful day, a beautiful ship, who could ask for anything more. A historical day for all the boat friends and the people of Duluth. Thanks for another outstanding video, stay safe and good health everyone. Peace!
MIke thanks for sharing this visit for this French cruise ship to Duluth. We have to remember France sent explorers to the Saint Laurence Seaway area. They sent missionaries and explorers to the great lakes area. I grew up in a city that was visited by French missionaries like Marquette who came to the Green Bay area when only native Indians were in residence. He landed in Bay Settlement on the east side of the Green Bay just north of the Fox river. Over time the Indians were placed on reservations in the area. Many locations in and around the great lakes have Indian native names, we lived in Wauwatosa after my father was transferred to the Milwaukee area from Green Bay.
Wendy, we all always appreciate seeing comments for you. In particular, you always give us some pieces of history and things that really tie these videos together in a fun way. You are so wonderful. Thank you for what you do in the comment section for all of us Boat Friends!👍🙏⛴️
Charlie, it was absolutely stunning in person! You could see the people on the ship were in a really good mood for obvious reasons. This would be a remarkable ship to be on board. And again, congratulations on the new house my friend!⛴️👍
Tim, thank you as always for leaving a nice comment. I’m really glad that you enjoyed this one. It has to be a pretty cool thing to be able to say you were on the ship. There are some happy passengers for sure.👍🎉
It’s always fun when you slip in a fun new ship to watch. It’s weird seeing this in Duluth! What a lovely surprise mid-week ship video from you. Absolutely fantastic.
@Hardwareman1343 that is one of my favorite videos. Here’s one that I really think you would like. Wait until you see the unbelievable lake conditions. It was absolutely beautiful that cold morning. ruclips.net/video/mKzamgCa6zw/видео.htmlsi=KfLgSW98N0_IglkA
There was a lot of extra things in here that made it fun. Many different ships. Plus that beautiful cruise ship. I’m glad that you enjoyed. Thanks again for dropping another positive, brother.👍⛴️
It was fun showing you things while we waited for the cruise ship. I like going in that little marina to show you what was going on before the big ship⛴️🙏
Kelly, don’t you think it’s still odd seeing cruise ships in Duluth? I know it’s weird, but I’m OK with it and I want to see more of them! Ships like this, from France, literally as cool as it gets.👍⛴️
Awesome!!!! What a Phenomenal Video!! Editing and Photography was Excellente !!!!! Thanks You Mike for taking the time to put your boat into the water!!! Excited for you as I watch your Channel Grow!!! 🤗❤️👍🙋🏻♀️

The Le Champlain is a beautiful looking Cruise ship! A lot of action in the harbor today we got to see one of my favorites the Mesabi Minor and the Coast Guard Cutter the Spar in dock. Loved watching the Captain back that Cruise ship out of dock. That is 180 lucky passengers! That ship is so sleek looking. Loved the look of those two big Globes on top of the ship as you were behind it as it left through the canal. Excellent video Mike!
How beautiful to see this cruise ship! The French company "Ponant" is known for its luxury cruise ships. I had the pleasure of capturing the maiden voyage of the sister ship "Le Lapérouse" during her departure from Amsterdam in 2019. I was able to take beautiful photos of it. Greetings from Alkmaar (NL) René
Hello my friend in the Netherlands! There are so many beautiful vessels that have come from the Netherlands. My favorite, named after your wonderful queen, Maxima! That’s such a beautiful ship that we get to see once in a while. I didn’t see it this year. I hope we still can see it. Thank you so much for taking time out of your evening and your beautiful country to watch this ship. Come on back and watch a ship and leave another comment. We look forward to seeing you.🇳🇱🇳🇱🇳🇱🇳🇱🇳🇱🇳🇱🇳🇱🇳🇱👍⛴️
Thank you for showing us around the beautiful scenery around Duluth . It always amazes me how the captains are able to move such large vessels and they just glide across the water. Such control and skill, just amazing. It's always treat to watch your videos and see these beautiful ships.

It’s definitely one of the most gorgeous ships I’ve ever seen in my life. I absolutely love the color scheme. It looks so modern and cool. And how could you go wrong with that pool on the stern?⛴️👍
I didn’t know other ships, than the “Vikings” made port in Duluth! The Hotel in the Harbor looks like one could be right “In” on the action, I’ll keep that in mind for my visit there, one day. I am so glad you had a driver so that you could concentrate on the “Le Champlain” to get the views you wanted, please thank that person for me. Another stellar report of a ship, thanks, Mike!
I really didn’t know much about it either. It’s really cool to see some of these extra cruise ships moving around. Believe me, I’ll try my best to record as many of these as I can show you the new styles of the ships come in.👍⛴️
Thank you so much! I want you to know that it was truly a pleasure recording this beautiful ship from France. To be able to connect Duluth and France together is pretty cool. What a great looking ship. We stayed in Duluth 10-2015 on the third floor of the hotel. We had a great view and walked to the ship channel several time to see the big freighters. Really enjoyed the adventure. You did a great job with this video, thanks.
This is a very cool comment! Did you do anything that you remember as far as restaurants are going places, it would be interesting to hear what you did.👍⛴️

Adam, this ship really lived up to the hype! It was so cool to see it. I made sure to have the video start where it was backing out by the fuel dock. It looked so cool coming backwards.⛴️👍
This ship is owned by a company called 'Ponant Cruise Lines". "Ponant" is a French word that means "west" or "where the sun sets". It's an archaic naval term that's the opposite of "levant". French archaeologists use the term to refer to the western seaboard of Europe or the Atlantic Ocean. The Ponant Sea can also refer to the western part of the Mediterranean Sea.
It really is very cool to have these cruise ships in Duluth. Did you see this video from the other day? ruclips.net/video/mvaC5q6cDNg/видео.htmlsi=O3rWty2LuuaqrJrk
I tried to find some extra fun things to do while we waited for the cruise ship so I brought you in that little marina area. Unfortunately, some rope wrapped around my propeller right after that, but luckily I was able to cut it off. That’s only problem, when you go on those little marinas you have that’s floating around underwater. Thanks again for leaving another comment friend.👍⛴️
Awesome video Mike!! What a beautiful ship. I watched her leave on the live cams that day and I thought I saw your boat with the flag!! Great footage from your boat!! Nice job brother!!! 👏👏

It could have been this one! I hope your travels are going well. I know you had beautiful weather in Savannah recently. Thanks for taking time out of your day to check this out Lauren.👍
As mentioned earlier, This is a sister ship in Cruise Line Ponant. They specialize in exotic itineraries mostly in and around Antarctica. It is noted that the mainline cruising companies are also adding specially designed ships specifically for the Adventure Cruise Market. And now it appears that Duluth is becoming a destination for those cruises joining Viking Cruise Line
Take a look at the lights on this cruise ship at night. Below the water. That’s amazing. www.cruiseline.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/le-champain-ponant-cruises-ship.jpg

Thanks for the extra video this week. Any time we get a video of the Boats and Harbor is nice. This Cruise Ship is absolutely beautiful.
I thought it might be a good idea to put out a video so people can think about ships versus anything else going on during the week. Also, let us think about the weekend ahead. Another cruise ship will be arriving on Saturday.👍⛴️
Great show, Mike, thanks! Beautiful day too!
Thanks for the comment friend, this is literally one of the most beautiful ships I’ve ever seen in Duluth⛴️👍
Another Masterpiece by Boatfriend Mike!
Looks beautiful in Duluth today!
Dave, this definitely was one of my favorite videos of all time just because of the uniqueness of this cruise ship👍⛴️
Wow!!! Here for this video!! Very beautiful cruise ship and so much to see. Thanks, Mike!
It was an absolutely amazing ship to be in Duluth. It definitely was the talk of the town by everybody in Duluth.
Hey Mike and Boat Friends! I photographed Le Champlain while visiting Port Huron, MI over Labor Day weekend. Beautiful vessel.
That would be really cool if you could email me a photo of that. I would love to see that. I know you will agree, it’s stunning in person. mikems1mn@gmail.com
Always enjoy your perspective of the harbor while cruising around in the boat. Thanks for that! Beautiful cruise ship.
Suzanne, I’m glad that you were able to check this one out. There’s nothing but good vibes about seeing this cool looking ship.⛴️👍
I was on the south pier when this ship went out. And I saw you in your boat, making this video! Awesome video as always, thanks so much!
All I did is press record Robin, the ship that everything else. It’s such a beautiful ship. It really is.👍⛴️
Beautiful Mike!! Thank you for capturing this and sharing it!!❤
It’s my absolute pleasure, Stephanie! Probably one of the funniest videos I’ve ever ever recorded of a ship👍⛴️
Chuck, one thing that we have to figure out is how to get on that ship. I know we would figure out a way to have a good party.

Scott, thank you, thank you! I’m so glad that you enjoyed this video!
Saw this on Marine Traffic and was hoping you captured it! Well done, my friend!

Jeff, it was really thrilling being able to watch this beautiful ship. The colors look so good.
Ken, I wonder if we should make this the official/unofficial cruise ship of the boat friends community?🤔👍⛴️🤣

87 degrees in southern Sanilac county. Michigan great videos!
Hey friend! Sounds like a wonderful day there in Michigan. How do we keep these nice days going?👍⛴️👋
Seen many similar size to this moored in Barcelona and privately owned. Some serious money there. As always thanks for the upload Mike it was awesome
I have seen many yachts about that size in Florida as well. Can you imagine having one of those ships for yourself? I don’t think you would ever have to leave it. I appreciate you watching another video Brother.⛴️👍
Great video of Le Champlain Mike. Lovely weather too. And I see you have a life ring aboard - good choice for fallers and I had to use one on my boat test in Australia to simulate a “man overboard”, plus a pair of earmuffs of course. 🤓 let’s keep in touch and I will try to find some info for you on the ship we were on. Will send separately if I can find it!
Hey pal! I really hope you feel better soon.
Mike, what a great get with your coverage of the Le Champlain at Duluth! She is a beaut! I hope the passengers had a good time here. Any idea why she was docked in an industrial area? Is that typical? The Duluth Chamber of Commerce would be wise to cut a promo deal with you to showcase this beautiful city. Thanks, too, for the quick tour near the USCG station. A new perspective for me. Keep it coming!
Hey, I hope you're doing great. Thank you so much for watching all the videos. I really want you to check out this video. The video is on a great lakes ship. Check it out. ruclips.net/video/mvaC5q6cDNg/видео.html

@@vibewithmike I loved it!! To be honest, I'm a little bit jealous. Lol I would love to take a tour of one of those old lakers!! Another awesome video brother!!
@Robbie1075 I promise to keep bringing you with every time I go on the ships. However, there have been a few of these big ships that I have went on, but I didn’t record because I wanted to get to know the crew and not make it about recording.
Wow, that’s a great looking ship! I guess this cruise is pretty excpensive but they pay for a great wiev😃! Thank’s for this one Mike it was amazing 😃👍!
Starting at 8390 dollars for 10 nights starting this Saturday from Thunder Bay.
I wonder how much it costed to build this ship? It’s a beautiful ship. Thanks so much for dropping another comment my friend.
OK, now we know Chuck, around $8000 just to get on
