This was so much fun Doug! Taking me back to my youth. Piece of Mind and Powerslave were huge for me. Triggered me to go and discover their back catalog and to be a fan for life. Something about those 2 albums hold a special place for me. The kind of songs that immediately take you right back to that time and place. Have to love the power of music to do that.❤

Martin Birch, everyone-the secret sauce to Iron Maiden's career-best work in the 80s. He knew bands better than they knew themselves, and he wrung the best out of them by any means necessary.

Finally. I've been waiting for this one and surprised it's taken so long to get here. Haven't watched it yet, but I think Aces High is possibly one of Iron Maidens highest points. The song just musically captures the essence of the visual imagery. The urgency and desperation of getting the fighters airborne and then the life or death thrill of aerial mortal combat. Perfection.........and then the follow up song in 2 Minutes to Midnight. What a riff. Brilliant!!!

I somehow bounced of Maiden in my mid-teens, having recently started listening from their 1st album forward - thanks to you Doug, and Matt Colville (mentioning in his streams). Powerslave has been in heavy rotation here, all killer tracks! Thanks for giving me the feeling of listening to it for the 1st time again, through your reactions! Can't wait for part 2 and my favorite song, Rime of the Ancient Mariner.

I derive SO much joy watching a musician like Doug experiencing Maiden for the first time. They were the best band on the PLANET with complex musical structure, deep lyrics, and incredible musicianship. And they STILL are a relevant band who are playing (and singing) better than they were 30 years ago.

I have a clear memory of buying this cassette on the way to the beach for a surf session. Losfer Words ended as I parked and I was so amped up to surf. It became my surf soundtrack of winter 1984-1985. Also bought it on vinyl and still have that album... along with everything else Maiden ever released.

I love how the cadence of Aces High simulates the pacing of an aerial dogfight. Just an absolute banger! And the lyrics in 2 Minutes To Midnight, while graphic, are pure poetry!

Came here for maybe my favourite metal album of all time and got Doug Helvering on some of the best air drums known to man. Priceless. Not mentioned here much is Steve Harris' bass playing on this album. It's truly epic. I'm a bass player myself, and this album has some of the gnarliest bass playing ever. Not only are the lines thoughtful, but the endurance needed to play songs like The Duellists, Back in the Village etc.
But to be honest - everyone on this album brought their A game.
    Epic. Well done Doug.

You seemed to be enjoying that a lot ! It´s (almost) 40 years since I first listened through that side 1. Oh how I loved it. And still do. As decades have passed, my favorites are now Flash of the Blade and The Duellists, as good as Aces High and 2 Minutes to Midnight are, maybe they´ve a bit worned out in my mind, as they have been around in live sets etc. Your remarks of Bruce singing are on point, this was maybe the best he´s ever been, before the torment of World Slavery Tour, which took it´s toll of them all. Don´t know, but I still think, that the sharpest 2% was off from Bruce´s voice after that insane long and tightly scheduled tour.

I had gotten into them the album prior to this one. Then once this record came out MTV teased all week that they'd be dropping the video to 2 Minutes so I triple-checked my VCR to make sure I got it. This tour (along with the final Metallica tour with Cliff the following year) is still my favorite show ever.

Last video I watched about Iron Maiden (pardon the pun... made) I think was that 'documentary' they did about their South American tour, when Bruce organised and Piloted that Jumbo! That was a really well made documentary, with some bits and pieces oft hem playing and talking to us... they managed to do a HUGE amount of concerts in a very short time.
Forgot what is called... you should watch that - possibly 2 hours long, if not wrong.
    You will enjoy it...

Two Minutes was what got me into Metal. The main riff blew me away, not to mention how the drums and lyrics build up to interact with it. The part where the slower half-time bridge returns to the main riff will probably give me goosebumps for as long as I'll have a pulse. To this day, I basically compare every new song to that one, and most hardly come close for me.
I'm looking forward to your reaction to side 2, especially Back In The Village.

Wow great stuff Doug. Just for context we are the same age. I was exposed to Maiden with this album back in 84, but being 7 years old, it didn't quite click. It wasn't till 88, that I bought Somewhere In Time that my love for Maiden was cemented. So I always lean to SIT or 7thSon as my favorite albums BUT there is no doubt in my mind that Powerslave is Maiden at their Pinnacle. The creativity, rawness, power, speed, lyrics and Bruce Fkin Dickinson! This album is ALL Killer with no Filler, I think that phrase was coined by Powerslave ;) !! Cheers, Up the IRONS!

Oh man, and I would absolutely be remiss not to mention the late legendary Producer, Martin Birch... He recorded, mixed and engineered this masterpiece. I would say, what made this record sound so clean and timeless; 50% is from the band and the other half is because of MB. It is what Maiden is missing in their modern era. I do love the new albums, i truly do, but they do not hold a candle to what was produced in the 80s
