When art becomes more than just a hobby, it gets really hard to enjoy the process and create only for yourself. Thanks for pointing these out! I also definitely agree with what you said about using references. There is no limit to what we can draw, but sticking to references only can get in the way of the creative process very easily.
I completely agree with the first one. I craved validation from others everytime i painted, then i stopped showing others my paintings for a while, and i started seeing major improvments.
I agree with what you say so much, i've been struggling so bad with creativity that i rely on references a lot ;;;, i've been trying to stimulate my creativity lately with book reading, tryting to sketch stuff and such! i hope im making some progress over it hahaha, thank you so much for making this video!! it's very nice to see someone talk about this as a topic!
Yes! I’m so glad someone really resonates with that point! I’m absolutely sure that your art will be improving even if it’s difficult to see yourself :) and reading is so good for inspiring a bit of creativity !
The first mistake you mentioned i realised after not finding satisfaction in the art or sketches I was doing for Instagram posts, I was doing those for likes n all, lately i started doing sketches for my satisfaction only, this also helped me get to more ideas and learned some new things also..😄
I fell into the same trap of trying to please the Instagram masses! I’m so glad you’re finding fun in it again, there’s nothing worse than making art that isn’t bringing you any satisfaction
I was talking about these things exacly to my friend yesterday. A lot of the time scrolling on YT and Pinterest really inspire or discourage me to continue my craft because of “oh i can’t do that fancy thing” or “i’ll burn myself out commiting to perfecting this one thing”, and forgeting that it wasn’t about being done with that project; rather it’s about the figuring things out and learning that I love about doing these projects. I think artists/craftsmen(women) naturally learn to do things without being praised for the skills or recognition because it’s what make them feel alive, not because the money could bring them in the first place.
Omg just subscribed! Ive only began trying my hand at art just a month ago and you're the first art youtuber who reeeaally drew me in. Just please contining making more videos and tutorials 🙏
@@tterpsichore I think it’s the Windsor and Newton dart sketching easel! I think they may have discontinued this exact one but you can still get it second hand on eBay
I’m still trying to figure this out as well😭 I started by doing a bit of both. I would still use a reference but start to change small elements. Maybe alter features of a portrait or the lighting to try and train myself. As I got more comfortable with that, I was able to not have to rely on the references as much and it definitely improved my designs. I was no longer limited by what references I could find, if that makes sense !
You are right, i had being a RUclipsr for few years( i had other channels) but i wasn't doing anything for myself there and that's how they failed. This Art channel I create a month ago and i already uploaded 15+ videos with literally no views and subs but i am doing this for myself that's why i am enjoying it and not worrying much. Also if you'll see my vids few of em are not good drawings but i uploaded em anyway ahaha. I love art and i am subscribing to you.
I draw with markers, and I'm stuck on the "bemore creative" part. I strive for perfectionism, and all I see is perfect art out there, and when I create something, it's just blah. Also, it doesn't help all my ideas are dark and morbid.
I really understand the struggle of wanting everything to be perfect, so much so that sometimes we never even start a drawing because its not a perfect idea. If those dark ideas are what you're more drawn to, then you should roll with that! I feel like you can never really go wrong with drawing something that you're drawn to
Okay, so once you paint something that you enjoy, how do you make a living with it? Prints online? Posting on IG and selling it? Because that’s where I want to go!
Yes exactly! There are so many possibilities to be able to make the art you love AND still make money! It's just finding your market of people who enjoy that style, whether it be making prints, comics or making videos about the art!
Painting for yourself is a great thing and a great slogan, but we live in a world of money. If you have more money, you have more power. Therefore, the goal is _always_ to have the most money.
I agree! Artists still have to live somehow so we need to make money. I take lots of commissions but only ones that align with what I want creatively. Even with things like commissions that are directly linked to pleasing another person, it doesn’t mean sacrificing painting for yourself. I still control a lot of elements of the pieces and really enjoy it ☺️
@@caitlinoliviaart Goodness, I was hoping you would disagree with me. For the record, I hate money. Awful stuff. Let's just take it all and bury it somewhere. Or else launch it straight at the sun.
Even that's okay! Who's judging? But when that attention from others becomes what you require to be happy it can become a problem. At the end of the day, ofc it's OK to make art for attention, but you should be happy in the piece you make yourself.

I’m so glad you agree!! I guess we’re all just trying to find a balance between our love of art and trying to make a living

It’s such a good feeling no longer making art just for validation!! 💪

Yes.!!!you are right on, on all your points. The issue is to remember what you say and take action. That is a personal matter
I’m glad they resonate with you! They’re all still a work in progress for me! It’s so easy to fall back into bad habits😅
Could I ask you, the easel at 0:36?

Thank you for the reminders!
I love these hints! Thank you for sharing! It is so inspiring!!
You are so welcome! I’m glad you liked the video!!❤️
Omg ive been struggling with the third tip a lot 😭 do you have any tips to find a balance between channeling creativity vs copying from reference?

Thanks a lot this video gave me somethings to think about.
Art is truly a science. It's incredible.

That's so amazing to hear! Just keep making art and doing what you enjoy, you can't go wrong with that! :)
im really happy that i'm able to learn from you ......
are u planning on showing your painting process here on youtube? I would love that!
Yes! I’m working on a few videos at the moment where I show my full process! Hopefully should be out in a few weeks 🤞
