Your journey is truly inspirational. You are beautiful in and out. After watching this video I have found again the inspiration to pursue oil paint. I am more into realistic classical drawing.
Oils really do feel so much better to use than acrylics in every way, I always struggled with acrylic paints not giving me the results I wanted when I painted with them, but the way oil both feels to work with and just looks in general fits me much better. Now I've been painting with oils for years and years, and whenever I have to use acrylics for something I'm reminded of how annoying I found them, haha! Also, because my respiratory system is super sensitive which meant solvents were hard to use, finding water mixable oils was truly a game changer.

They're absolutely beautiful! I would love to see them in person if that's allowed. It's astonishing how well preserved they are! Thank you so much for introducing me to them
Interesting idea, we'll talk about it in 10 years - don't encourage anyone to paint with oil because it's very complicated and reserved for traditional maniacs like Cistercian monks who want to sacrifice their lives for their art - which is why the majority of painters preferred painting with acrylic from the moment it was invented because you can use colors directly at the exit of the tubes and superimpose them - because the colors must also be preserved on the canvas without migrating one in the other or drooling through the canvas - and quality colour tubes are hard to find and very expensive - but you can make your own colours with powdered pigments There is also varnish - because we don't have enough problems - which means that most old paintings become yellow brown, cracked and illegible in 50 years - museums have their cellars full of them and don't know what to do with them, you should take a look - or take advantage of the rare exhibitions where the work of those who remove these varnishes after 100 years - a year's work for a piece of painting It takes 15 years to train an engraver and 10 years for a traditional painter (oil) - but you will have to find a teacher to guide you during these 10 years - you could be his assistant - young people entered a painter's studio at the age of 11 - but finding a teacher when the technique is no longer taught (for lack of a teacher)? But you have plenty of time
@@skoruno1 If you don't understand anything I'm saying, it's normal - So a few lessons: don't listen to the young artist who speaks, it's too complicated for you - and I just wrote that it's very very complicated - Crayola offers boxes of 100 colored pencils...

I’ve since tried a different type of paper that wasn’t as bad but still not the same as canvas
@@caitlinoliviaart Oh yeah for sure, a primed canvas will help! And haven't tried linseed oil yet, will check that out. Thanks!
Wow. May I ask how many years you have been painting? I just started about a year ago with acrylic and just started using watercolors. I want to try gouache next and then oils because they seem the most intimidating. Your artwork is stunning. Thank you for sharing your art with the world.
I've been painting with acrylics for around 7 years now! But gouache and oils are both really fun to use, I think you'll enjoy them!
@@caitlinoliviaart Wow that is a long time. thanks for answering. I think I will too.
Real nice work
Thanks!! :)
That's really great.
daamn thats good 😳how long have you been painting for in general?
Thanks! I think it’s been around 7 or 8 years since I first tried acrylic painting - I think I was about 12
@@caitlinoliviaart you are awesome! I am only a baby artist, picked up a brush for the first time a year ago, but i already love oil paint the most. btw. you look kind of familiar. I think I'm gonna paint a portrait of you 😄
don't give full stop to your excellence , there must be only comas. and keep surpassing yourself
I loved this project great job but I died a little inside every time I saw u blending on the canvas in the beginning 😂
Hi, what paper book did you use?
It's the winsor and newton canvas paper for acrylic and oil
Good Job!
Thank you!!
1 question - drying time of that oils is ? Like how much to wait before you can actually do some 2nd layers of colors , or varnish it on the end ?
I wait until It's touch dry to add another layer, just making sure than I follow the fat over lean rule. But to be honest I haven't varnished any of my oil paintings yet because I'm worried it'll be too soon 😅 so I'm not the best person to answer that question, It's so hard to know when is the right time because it could be dry on top but still too wet underneath
@@caitlinoliviaart hahah , yeah I gonna stay with my acrylic retarder and colors for now ,there is no question I will try oils one day ... :D Thanks ! and Keep going you are amazing :)
That portrait was from phantom of the opera wasn’t it. Good film. very disrespected film but it was well performed and well made
@@paulwoodford1984 I feel very uncultured, I haven’t actually seen it😅 I will have to add it to my list
Damn! I'm currently using acrylics. What advice do you have for someone who wants to use oil?
It's so hard but you've really gotta try and just forget everything you know. It won't work going into oils with your acrylic techniques and mindset ( as I found out😅). Try completely new techniques and play around with it until you find a way that you like. I'm still trying out different ways of oil painting, I'll see another artist paint in a different way and be like 'huh, let me try that'. I wish you luck on your oil journey!
I really enjoyed your video. You got a new subscriber! I would love to learn how your approach to fat over lean (solvents mediums etc) for all your layers.
@@shinkfieldstudio I’m so glad you liked it! 🥰 I’m still figuring out myself about the fat over lean rule so I won’t share anything until I’m super confident I know what I’m doing ( don’t want to give you any false info😂)
@@caitlinoliviaart my gosh oil is so tricky 😆please do share as soon as you figure it out
Would you recommend to start with acrylics or oil? I always wanted to paint with oil and even have all the necessary stuff but i kind of feel like it is harder than acrylic. I am a tattoo artist and I have been drawing and digital painting for a long time but it is very difficult for me to star the actual paint😪
@@Pankov.tattoo it’s hard to say. I’m leaning more towards saying that you should start with acrylics but I have a full video coming out next Tuesday comparing the two mediums where I’ll go into way more detail about the pros and cons so I hope that might be helpful!
@@caitlinoliviaart thanks! Will check it out:)
Do u work a job or anything that got in the way of your learning or are you free on time? That’s what’s holding me back from working on oil painting consistently, not having time. But your improvement in just 30 days is superb🔥
@@7MileDae I study Zoology at Uni full time and do commissions on the side. It was definitely hard to keep up with it while I had lots of other work so I did mostly small quick paintings. Even a little bit every day can make a difference, don’t let that hold you back!
@@caitlinoliviaart I do have about 2 hours of free time after a work day I just waste over thinking, sounds smart to use it on practicing small paintings.
@@7MileDae trust me I understand! It’s like decision paralysis. And then by the time I actually know what I want to do, I’ve wasted most of the time😭
I really enjoyed your video. You got a new subscriber! I would love to learn your approach to fat over lean (solvents mediums etc) for all your layers.
Wow
Did you paint straight on the oil painting paper? Or did you prep it with something? Im not really sure if i have to prep it
@@Romy4926 I did paint straight onto the paper but I shouldn’t have😅 I was just being lazy because I was making a painting everyday and it was too much faff. But when I’m doing a proper painting I always double gesso the paper and use a spay of varnish to seal my drawing and to stop the oil from absorbing into the paper later down the line. Hope this helps!
👏👏👏
awesome
What kind and brand of paper did you use?
It's winsor and Newton oil & Acrylic canvas-textured paper. I wasn't super impressed with it to be honest, I feel like blending wasn't great so I've moved over to hahnemuhle watercolour paper
ur bf’s reaction was mine bc WOAHHH. i’m currently making a puppet so listening to this vid makes me feel like we’re making stuff together :)

ahah girllll not painting with oils on paper 😭 something really cool you might like is canvas paper! it’s cut into sheets and already primed , super practical for studies :)

Idk, anything about painting but girl can i suggest you to check out Ajanta cave paintings of India🇮🇳 the oldest buddiest cave paintings r so beautiful, Fresco style paintings. 2000 yrs old,our indian govt. Is also not giving f* to it. Ajanta caves are the only bestestt carved and fully hand painted caves exist in whole world.this site actually deserve plc in 7 wonders. Jus thought to give u suggestions, might be that painting style is gonna give you sm inspiration bc its too old. Indian ppl don't cate bout art lol its f* sad that most of the paintings got ruined by yrs of erosion, but just thought to share thos thing eith u bc we gonna loose all this very sooon.
They're absolutely beautiful! I would love to see them in person if that's allowed. It's astonishing how well preserved they are! Thank you so much for introducing me to them
COMMON AFGANASTAN W
Interesting idea, we'll talk about it in 10 years - don't encourage anyone to paint with oil because it's very complicated and reserved for traditional maniacs like Cistercian monks who want to sacrifice their lives for their art - which is why the majority of painters preferred painting with acrylic from the moment it was invented because you can use colors directly at the exit of the tubes and superimpose them - because the colors must also be preserved on the canvas without migrating one in the other or drooling through the canvas - and quality colour tubes are hard to find and very expensive - but you can make your own colours with powdered pigments
There is also varnish - because we don't have enough problems - which means that most old paintings become yellow brown, cracked and illegible in 50 years - museums have their cellars full of them and don't know what to do with them, you should take a look - or take advantage of the rare exhibitions where the work of those who remove these varnishes after 100 years - a year's work for a piece of painting
It takes 15 years to train an engraver and 10 years for a traditional painter (oil) - but you will have to find a teacher to guide you during these 10 years - you could be his assistant - young people entered a painter's studio at the age of 11 - but finding a teacher when the technique is no longer taught (for lack of a teacher)?
But you have plenty of time
What are you Talking about hahaha
@@skoruno1 If you don't understand anything I'm saying, it's normal - So a few lessons: don't listen to the young artist who speaks, it's too complicated for you - and I just wrote that it's very very complicated - Crayola offers boxes of 100 colored pencils...
You are talnted!
Aw thank you!
I love my oils, I hate acrylics
I definitely understand now the hate towards acrylics haha
I hate acrylic paint in comparison to oil.
I’m not sure if I can ever go back😭
good for your boyfriend
once you do oils you well never want to do anything else
I can confirm, this is very accurate
uuhhh... rockie mistake, painting on paper. Been there, done that. Like pitbull said. Oil is best over canvas and wood. Always gessoed.
I know right! I though canvas paper would be alright but even that was awful to work on🥲
Romans already had oil painting.
As far as we know, oils came about in around the 7th century. Romans likely had tempera!
Bro you already knew how to paint on day 1 😂😂 that’s cheating! Great work tho
Well…I feel like CR7 or Leo Messi is teaching how to play soccer in 30.

What a shame! You will soon write a title saying "I tried to paint like Velazquez in 30 days". You cannot become a very good oil painter in 30 days or 5 years, lil kiddo. Don't be a clown, make art
