Where did you purchase the crystal? I have a 1959 rolex oyster perpetual 34mm 6534 that I’ve been trying to get watch crystal for and the couple I ordered have been half mm off tried sanding polishing the crystal but always run into problems would just like the right crystal

Thank you for the video for some reason i thought the crystal went into the rehaut cause you cant really see the indentation in the crystals that fit over that part of the case.

You can just push the crystal from the other side after you took of the bezel. Less prying less risk.
Do you have to take the whole thing apart to do this? Can’t you just pop off the bezel and the glass on the watch as normal?
No. Just the bezel has to come off. I will take them apart to if it is glass in case bits are floating in the movement

Would you advise changing the Datejust to Sapphire / Glass ?
If you do that it will be nice but not genuine I think early watches had an acrylic version I'm told a few off the reissue ones are even better then the genuine article and alot cheaper too correct if I'am wrong here ?
If your keeping for yourself it's fine if selling on the buyers will want all to be period correct
Is there an alternative for the crystal press?
For this example if you don’t want to purchase a press, you will need something that allows you to push the bezel down. Something that presses against the bezel but does not touch the crystal. You could try a socket and a microfiber towel but the nylon discs for a crystal press won’t scratch any of the parts.

I have an old Waltham divers watch with a loose plastic domed crystal with a flat outer edge. Do you know if these crystals require gaskets or are they simply friction fit? I have had the crystal out to polish it, and there was no gasket installed previously. I have since used some GS Hypo cement applied to the inner edge of the crystal ledge prior to re-install. Seems to be holding, but I am afraid to water test it. To better ensure water resistance should I be looking to replace the crystal with one slightly larger in diameter? Thanks!
Hi, Let me try to do my best to explain, but if you post the model number of the watch, I'll be better able to answer this. I'm guessing that the crystal is a pressure fit, and that maybe it is too small for the bezel on the case. If it is a replacement, then this is common, because matching older crystals is very difficult, and they usually need to be cut down. GS Hypo will hold the crystal in place, but I would recommend that you use a UV Crystal Curing cement which will help keep it resistant to moisture. If you have ANY Doubt, do not water test the watch. I usually water test cases with the movement out, but steps and chrono buttons in, that way I do little or no damage. Getting a larger crystal, and polishing it down to fit is the way to go. If you have any questions, let me know.
@@watchesandjewelry Thanks Peter. I agree that the best solution would be to replace the crystal with a larger one. While I don't plan on ever using this vintage watch for swimming or diving, I would like the piece of mind knowing that I can wash my hands without having to remove it, (I lost a nice watch doing this once). The sad part is I just got this watch back from servicing. They claimed to have replaced all gaskets, yet they sent the watch out for water testing with a loose crystal. Needless to say it failed!

My crystal press wont push the bezel all the way down :( it doesnt have straight walls like yours

There are a few professional watchmaker RUclips channels like Mark Lovick, Nekkid Watchmaker, etc. that you can tell are precise and neat in their approach to matchmaking. No offence but Peter is an example of the opposite side. Kind of the quick and get it down to it type.

Is that Watch waterproof only with the Crystal? Without crystal gasket?
The plastic crystal is the gasket in this case. Bezel is not just cosmetic but helps to put pressure on the crystal to seal it
On older Rolex watches,the overlap on the crystal fits into a slight groove around the case front and provides the seal itself.Newer models have a gasket.

Thats a bad idea to change the glass self. It would be not wather proof.

They are. The bezel seals the watch crystal on the case

Rolex states that their watches are waterproof to 60 meters. Ladies watches less. As a watch ages and wears from use it will naturally be less resistant to water. Wear to crowns, case tubes, back covers all have an effect in water resistance. I would never take a vintage Rolex or a vintage omega that was not in almost perfect condition diving to 200 feet or more. Even though we test watches they are tested for just a minute or so. Longer exposure to pressure on older watches can have u predicted results.

Seriously how many people will dive this watch hopefully no one there are plenty off Casio watches which will exceed their water tested ratings no one dives a Rolex like this or if you do you got rocks in your head so many sub homage copies which you could dive as well most off you won't even see 10 m off water ....
I won’t be sending you my datejust for a new crystal. You may as well take an axe and chop off the bezel off, it wouldn’t look any worse than you using your that blade.
what do you suggest? tape over the blade? or a specialized too?
Holy hell this was hard to watch. Proper tools or more importantly ANY PREVENTION of damage would go a long way.
You can see the gold chunks come off the bezel stuck to the razor blade! Unacceptable.
This video should not be used as any kind of guide for anyone.
I repair this damage after it leaves hands like yours, and while it’s these mishaps that keep a roof over my head, I care far too much about the pieces to allow anyone anywhere to think this is acceptable treatment to any timepiece, let alone one of value.
What a cowboy way to change a crystal on a classic watch - I mean really ! razor blades and ham-fisted approach. I won't be sending my watch to anyone other than a genuine watchmaker.

@@hq72hotmaleIf you can’t afford the repair bill then you can’t afford the Rolex. By bodging the crystal repair you can easily lose much more than you save by doing it yourself.
And the 'watchmaker' will do it the same way- only with a $100 razor blade and a $1000 crystal press.
Another one with a razor blade you lot deal with high end watches but have low end tools dont send no watvh here
Maybe so but the man was super careful and methodical in his approach I guess you could go to Rolex for the overpriced version off this wonder what you would pay there no one is saying pull the movement apart but even removing that you better be careful I'd never service a movement myself but I'd sure perform the task I just saw here if a person doing the task is a complete fool then yes I'd not let them near the watch either

I've never seen a 2k repair for a sapphire crystal! LOL I'm sure someone has charged that much... I just changed a Patek Phillip sapphire domed crystal, and I had a hard time charging 300.00! lol
That's absolutely ridiculous. What a great way to ruin the bezel.
