    Hey! I bought one of those high gaskets and sapphire crystals on eBay too , for my OQ thing is those crystals aren’t the same as a Rolex sapphire I sat them side. By side the edges are cut at a better angle on the Rolex. But my thing is those gaskets are huge and expose the plastic gasket past the bezel unless u had like a 7.0g bezel to fill the space in my opinion it looks goofy sitting up so high, I cut mine down seems to be working just fine sits perfect but do you know of any shorter height gaskets for the 36mm oyster quartz oyster case

    I have several watches like 16014, 16030, 1600, 1630 among others. I have bought some sapphire crystals on ebay but which supplier would you recommend to buy? I would like to find some crystals only with magnification on the dater but not concave.

    hi peter, i'm looking to replace the acrylic glass on a rolex perpetual datejust i inherited.i cant read the ref number anymore but the crystal measures 30.49mm above the bezel. will the 31 mm sapphire replacement glass fit it/waterproof it? i heard it will need a new bezel for this change. is that old/wrong information. Thanks for a great video!

    • @watchesandjewelry
      @watchesandjewelry  3 года назад

      It depends. If you have a watch with an original bezel then chances are there may be a conversion gasket and crystal available that will press on fine. I would suggest that you remove the band ant the watch case and verify your model number. From there using the model number you can search for a sapphire crystal and gasket. Remember that these are aftermarket only.

      @@watchesandjewelry thank you so much for the quick reply . Peter i have taken the band off, but with the resources i have, the model number is mostly illegibe due to scratching. i believe i can make out a 1604 but i cant be sure nor do i know if there are numbers preceding or following what i think i can read
      . is there another place on the watch where I might find the number? I believe it was purchased in the early eighties.

    Hi Peter, thank you for the video. What are your thoughts on the sapphire crystal and gasket from Amazon compared to the oem one that Rolex provides? Is there a difference?

    • @watchesandjewelry
      @watchesandjewelry  3 года назад +1

      They are at about 98%. The crystals are fine. I have had 1 or 2 gaskets fail out of a few hundred. I always ask the customer what they want. So think about how you wear your watch. Diving. Shower. Etc. normally the pressure from the bezels is more than enough to keep any gasket tight.

      @@watchesandjewelry hey peter, i was doing some crystal replacement work on a Rolex DJ and noticed the old gasket was a lot thinner and flimsier than the new gasket I replaced it with. my questions is, will the thicker/more rigid gasket make the watch more waterproof? and btw way the amount of force needed on the press was significant, so Im just assuming that makes it a better seal

    • @watchesandjewelry
      @watchesandjewelry  2 года назад

      Too thick doesn’t help. Gaskets typically have 15% play. The tighter you turn the case back, the more risk you run of actual damaging a gasket. I see this more with quartz watches when some places think they are tightening up an oil drain on a car. Lol. It is hard to give you the right amount over a text. But if you think that just one more turn works better… stop.

    • @lazylewislewis4944
      @lazylewislewis4944 2 года назад

      @@watchesandjewelry I meant the gasket for the crystal on a Rolex DJ was thicker than the previious. Also, the bezel took a lot more pressure to put on, could this potentially increase its water resistance?

    • @watchesandjewelry
      @watchesandjewelry  2 года назад

      Ok. Got it. Crystal gasket thickness may be different in two ways. Wall thickness and height. I am guessing you mean wall thickness. A new nylon gasket is slightly thicker. It will make it difficult to press on. As it is pressed, it should compress and make a tight seal. There are also different thicknesses of seals based on the particular model that you have. A datejust from the 80s uses a different gasket all be it similar size watches then one from say, 2010. If you have the correct gasket, based on the case model and the bezel cannot be pressed on without Samantha gasket, it may be a bad gasket. Hard to say here. And of course the gasket is keyed, so that the crystal only fits in it one way, so check to see if the gasket is up side down also.

    do we need to remove the movement, etc from the watch, or can we replace the crystal with everything in tact?

    • @watchesandjewelry
      @watchesandjewelry  2 года назад +1

      If the glass is shattered or there is debris in the watch, I would take the movement out. Glass can get into anywhere on a watch causing other issues. If it is just an exterior chip, you don’t have to go that far. Pressure test afterwards or avoid water until you do

    Is there a way you could give me some direction as to measurements? I sent the model and calibre to a provider in Texas and they swore it was the right crystal but, it wasn't. How can I measure and order accordingly? It's a Rolex datejust 34mm ref. 1500 calibre 1570 and the bezel diameter is ~29.2 mm. I believe they sent me a 30mm + gasket! Thanks !

    • @watchesandjewelry
      @watchesandjewelry  3 года назад +2

      Ok. If the model number listed on the case is a 1500 then you need a plastic cyclops crystal no 117. If you want to change it to sapphire then you will have to go aftermarket. I.e. eBay. Search for a sapphire crystal 25-117

      Hey. Thanks for the appreciation. So. How do you know if you have a genuine or an aftermarket part? It depends on who and where you buy from. Newer Rolex models have laser etched crystals. However, the fakes can also be etched. Buy from a reputable seller or supplier. I will say that for older watches, aftermarket crystals are as good as genuine. Just make sure the gaskets are good and have them pressure tested.

    What can cause a Crystal to keep falling off the watch? Is the bevel too loose? It’s original bezel, unless the watch repair shop changed it out because they broke the original. It an antique men’s rolex watch that I was given by my father. The watch belonged to his uncle. I think it’s around a 1942-1952 Rolex. Pearl face. Stainless bracelet and clasp. I know of 5 times my father has had to get the Crystal reattached or replaced after it fell off the watch while he was wearing it. He had the watch from 1992-2010. So for the Crystal to come off 5+ times in 18 years is ridiculous!! I think the watch repair place did something shady. I have not work the watch these past 13 years because I need to have the Crystal reattached, or order a new sapphire Crystal for it. Again, I’m wondering if the original bezel was damaged during repair and they replaced it without my fathers knowledge. And it must be just the slightest bit bigger diameter wise than the original bezel and therefore is not holding the Crystal on tightly. My father was a Realtor and Contractor. He did not do hard labor and bump or knock his watch around. He was not rough with it, but yet the Crystal would come off. That has never happened to one of my watches and I’ve been collecting watches since the mid ‘80s. Do you have any advice naught on this that would help possibly explain why this Crystal keeps falling off? I would greatly appreciate your thoughts on the matter. Thank you!! I enjoyed your video also!!! 🙏🏼

From looking at the video, this Rolex oyster case has a distinct serial number between the lugs on one side and a model no. 16013 on the other side. You cannot just make a BS comment and then turn your back and hide away like a coward.
