This was one of my favorites growing up in the early sixties. My mother had this album, and I played it repeatedly. I had great uncles who were in the Navy during WWII.

Johnny's such a great storyteller, North to Alaska's another classic. Growing up around country music he wasn't mentioned much but has such memorable songs

@@acetheautisticroyalnirgizer I looked him up after hearing the alligator line in Battle of New Orleans. Johnny Cash is the first Johnny people think of in country music. Both were fantastic

Sad to say the Bismarck was dealy as far as 30 nautical miles away compared to most of ours was rated deadly at only around 20. It was the reason why they limited the size of battle ships afterwards even to this day.

The story of this great WW2 battle makes for great reading,m too, and the movie is surprisingly-good, considering when it was made. The Bismarck took a lucky hit from an airplane-launched torpedo, dropped by a biplane so antiquated that the Bismarck's state-of-the-art gunnery technology was unable to be brought to bear on the slow, low-flying biplanes. The hit from the torpedo froze the Bismarck's rudder, making it nearly-impossible to maneuver and slowed the ship greatly, allowing the Briti8sh ships to chase it down and essentially batter it to death.
One of my favorite Johnny Horton historical songs is 'Jim Bridger,' about a pioneering mountain man who did a lot of exploration that rarely gets taught in history class - I had never heard of him at all, except on our Johnny Horton LP.

The old stringbag biplane Swordfish's strength was in it's slow speed which enabled torpedo's to be aimed accurately and also in it's ability to remain undetected by enemy radar
The old lump of string and wood was actually the most successful naval aircraft in WW2 according to Wikipedia sinking more German and Japanese shipping than any other naval aircraft

Bismark was actually the Second Biggest ship. Japanese was the First.

Being German I always feel kinda guilty bobbing along with this. Even if I wasn't German born this is literally a bob about death and killing and disasters. Still I cannot help myself 😅

Hi. The shells were SIX FEET TALL and weighed OVER 2000 pounds and can be shot out to 23 miles distance. The Bismarck was built to go after the convoys of supplies being shipped to England, and not go toe to toe with other battleships. ALTHOUGH, when it did, it sank the pride of the English fleet, the HMS Hood, IN MINUTES!!

Loved your account on history. You should listen to battle of New Orleans. Same artist. With this song, it would have been amazing just at the closing credits. Damn, you heard New Orleans already. Listen to Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald but not the version that people react to. The original radio song

Cool fact about the Bismarck is it was on a mission to France if it would have made it the plan was to disappear into the Atlantic because it never would have been found if on the open ocean. If it's mission would have been successful it would have wreaked havoc on supply lines and disappear into the it ocean again leaving a very good chance that WW2 would have turned out very different.
