I grew up in and still attend exactly this type of evangelical church. I don't take any offense at all at the song. In fact, in addition to it being funny, I consider it a valuable warning to examine yourself so you don't get complacent and self-righteous. When Ray Stevens makes fun of people and institutions, he doesn't do it out of contempt, he does it out of love. You can tell, and that makes a big difference.
I just read a comment from someone who said they were in Amish country and observed a number of Amish people watching Weird Al's Amish Paradise, and they were having a good laugh over it. Like your evangelical church, they could see the humor in their quirks (as compared to others).
Ray Stevens is a comedic/ songwriting genius! I think we all could use a few squirrels in our churches! Thanks for a fun reaction; you caught a lot of peculiarities of American church culture.
We were one of five families that started a new church in the early 1970's. For the 1-year anniversary, we had a big picnic outside, and a squirrel ran right through the crowd. So, when this came out, we were all reminded of it happening and got a good laugh. Sometimes churches need a good wake-up call every now and then. LOL
Oh Lord!! I'm so glad this was suggested to you, lol. One of my favorites by him. So glad you got to this one, Saeed. It's hysterical😂😂. Much love to you and your family❤️😊
I saw Ray in concert in a small auditorium in the early 80's. My Ex let out a shrill whistle from the second row. Ray immediately spotted her and pointed her out with a big laugh. That show was a lot of fun. Great reaction, yours is one of my favorite channels.
#TheMississippiSquirrelRevival #RayStevens #SaeedReacts 🤣🤣🤣... Such a fun song..very characteristic of Ray Stevens... Have a great week..see you soon... 🌿🌿🌿
"Sitting Up With The Dead", "The Streak", "Shriner's Convention", are some great, funny, Ray Stevens songs. Some other hilarious songs are "Trailerhood", "How Do You Like Me Now", and "I Want To Talk About Me", by Toby Keith. Then there's "Homegrown Tomatoes" by Guy Clark. All are crazy funny!!
@@SaeedReacts. you should do a livestream sometime on a weekend - so you can interact with your subscribers. I think it would be very popular and entertaining. You could pick an entertainer for the topic of the day and how their music has affected our lives.
"Juanita and the Kids" should be next it's hilarious, you will have more fun than you've had even on this crazy one! I absolutely loved your reaction Saeed! Deb
Home Free did an acapella version of this song, too. Theirs is a cartoon animated version with Home Free's great singing. Ray Stevens has a lot of fun novelty songs like "The Streak" and "Guitarzan" will get you started down that road. He has more traditional songs like "Everything is Beautiful".
My favorite detail in the church is the red carpet and the floor grate. That grate connects to the central heating (50's era) and if you stepped on it in plastic sole shoes, they would melt in the grid pattern a bit.
That is something you would remember for sure! In fact when i was a kid we had similar heating in our appartement. Could hurt a lot if you stepped on it 😅
If you want to go down a rabbit hole, there is a alot of people that remember fruit of the loom having a cornocopia (a horn looking thing that the fruit would pour out of). I remember it but apparently they say that it never had one.
Ray Stephens was the king of the country novelty/comedy song. His first big hit back in the 60s was Ahab the Arab (yea pretty racist but heck I was 6 yrs old and thought it was hilarious). Then the classic Guitarzan(This one is def worth checking out, still my fav Ray Stephens song). Then it wouldn't be the 70s without "The Streak". Mississippi Squirrel was a 90s phenom best I remember.
Love this song! Great reaction! Home Free has covered this song - its well worth a watch! And for more Ray - I second agree with the It's Me Again Margaret - the gal that was Sister Bertha-better-than-you in this one is Margaret in that one! soo good! Also The Streak! and yes I'm My Own Grandpa [find the one with the chart - it helps with the confusion on how can that be?] Love Ray Stevens!
"Antebellum" means "before the war." In the South, this is understood to refer to the U. S. Civil War. In the song, when he describes his grandmother's home town as "antebellum," he is saying that it was quite old-fashioned, or maybe behind the times.
Did you notice the 'ladies' were in the 'Amen pew', one name sister Better-than-you. LOL Some funny lyrics here. Here in the US you can still get Fruit of the Loom Tee shirts, sweatshirts & underwear. Not sure about anything else. The streak' is another hilarious one by Ray. 'Back in the day' people would strip naked & 'streak' across a stage or a baseball field during a game etc. LOL Ray ran with it.
Fruit of the Loom is still a brand of clothing - mostly underwear. I would bet that most folks don't get the meaning, so let me bring everyone up to speed. A "loom" is a device to weaving cloth. "Fruit" as used here is the ultimate result of something. As in bringing something to fruition. So Fruit of the Loom is the cloth, the end product of the loom. The company's logo for years was a Cornucopia (horn of plenty) spilling out various fruits.
Thanks for hsaring some info on that! I remember that logo! I don't really see it that much here in Belgium anymore. Late 90's, it seemed to be everywhere.
I don't know anybody that took offense to the song and I grew up going to small country Wesleyan Methodist churches where jumping pews and shouting hallelujah wasn't far-fetched during revivals.
I don't remember anyone being offended. All that mattered was it's Ray Stevens singing another funny song. Ray was never mean spirited about anything. We all waited to see/hear what he was going to do next. I still have some of his albums & cds. I never got the chance to see Ray perform in person. I always thought he must have put on a good show. He still performs today.
Fruit of the Loom is a clothing brand, but in the 'States, it's mostly just men's underwear. I imagine there would be some sort of embarrassment showing the logo in public 😂

Some great fun music from my early youth 😂😂 Fruit Of The Loom went into bankruptcy around the early 2000s. It got bailed out and is still operating

My wife's and youngest daughter's favorite Ray Stevens song (mine is Ahab the Arab).

They were briefs, "Fruit of the Loom, under a dollar" and later "...only a dollar" was the advertisement.🙂
