  • At 47,200 TONS, the Bismarck was the largest and most advanced Battleship the world had ever seen... but from the day it was launched, it was already in the process of being rendered the poster child of and outmoded form of naval combat by the advent of the Aircraft Carrier. Sabaton does a great job of bringing the might and tragedy of this ship into perspective.

A stand alone single in 2019. The video is so good because it was made in conjunction with Wargaming, the company that makes the World of Warships game. The Capt. of the boat the band went out in is the SON of the last survivor of the Bismarck, who had passed away, I want to say about a year before this was made. The name painted on that boat is Primo Victoria. That is the name of the first Sabaton album released, the title track is about D-Day at Normandy.
2 more numbers for you, 1418 and 3. 1418 men aboard the battlecruiser HMS Hood, which was sunk by the Bismarck. 3, the number of men that survived the Hood's sinking.
Recommend, if you haven't seen any of them yet, any of the animated story videos: Night Witches, No Bullets Fly, Lady of the Dark, The Red Baron, and The First Soldier.

This video was made a year after the last survivor from Bismark had died. Rumor says that it is his son who play the captain and it is his memorabilia on the wall in the beginning.

One of our neighbors who died years ago was a survivor of the Bismarck. He was very miserable the rest of his days. Poor soul.😢

Excellent reaction. I always get a thrill up my spline when the Bismark appears out of the mist in the shot from the boat's pilothouse.
Internet rumor is that the swinging legs seen for a brief moment as the band ascends the stairs to meet the vessel skipper belong to Floor Jansen, wife of drummer Hannes van Dahl and vocalist of Nightwish.
The role the United States played in the sinking of the Bismark is not well known. The Coast Guard Cutter Modoc was assigned to assist in rescue operation on the North Atlantic convoy route. Responding to calls for assistance in the Bay of Biscay, Modoc sighted the Bismark, which had slipped away from the British pursuit. She radioed the sighting, a radio call picked up by an RAF PBY piloted by US Navy Ensign Leonard Smith, on detached duty (a role considered secret at the time) to train the RAF. Ensign Smith was the man who spotted the Bismark, allowing the Home Fleet to intercept and sink the warship.

The 1960 movie "Sink the Bismarck" was one of many inspirations to enlist in the US Navy near the end of the Cold War. I ended up serving on a Nimitz class carrier. I have the memory of being moored on the opposite side of the pier 12 in Norfolk from USS Iowa. Wish I still had the pictures taken from vulture's row.

Excellent movie that does an admirable job telling the operational side of the pursuit of the Bismark based on the C.S. Forester book "The Last Nine Days of the Bismark." A good movie and book for any interested in the story of the end of the Bismark.

Great reaction!🤘 You're right. It's not the soldiers on either side that deserve to die in any war, not now, not then. It's not because of them it is/was a war. Sometimes we've learned from history, sometimes we didn't.
I look forward to more Sabaton reactions!

One thing wrong with the final Battle. That was HMS Sheffield, fighting Bismarck. She was a 6 inch gun light cruiser that Bismarck would have blown out of the water. In Reality Bismarck fought four ships in her final battle. Battleships, King George the 5th and HMS Rodney. Rodney was responsible for doing the most damage to Bismarck. Two Heavy 8 inch gun cruisers also joined the fight. HMS Norfolk and HMS Dorsetshire.

Hi again! First Rudy Ratzinger, then my Grandpa....he was drafted as an Engine Seaman in 1940, and in 1941....his Torpedoboot was one of the small vessels to provide escort to home coming U-Boots to the french Ports of La Rochelle and Brest, and also big ships like the Bismark...but his Ship never made it to the meeting point...or better said, Bismark never made it to the meetingpoint

The sad thing is that the Battle of the Some was actually just a diversion to reduce the pressure on Verdun. One of the most costly battles of the First World War and probably one of the most famous was actually only intended as a diversion for the Germans so that the French could hold Verdun.
You have to imagine that in the eyes of the generals it was justified to wipe out over 1 million lives just to gain a city and around 6km of land.
In every single war the leaders thought they knew what they were doing and it wouldn't last long. And in every single war, the war itself has refuted them.

What you said that was wrong was that the Allies sank the ship, it was the Germans themselves who sank it when they couldn't handle themselves and they had crypto machine and other secrets that they didn't want to get into the wrong hands.
But I recommend you to watch Natt hexerna (animated story) the longer of the videos
and another is En livstid i krig (a Swedish song about the 30-year war)

Almost the same. Most of us don`t know that Tirpitz was actually bigger; but not in size or fire power, that was standard. Tirpitz was heavier (by 1000 tons), had slightly more power (driving power), had better range (distance traveled), and had about 300 less crew personnel than Bismarck.

If it had been a survivor he had to be approx 100 years old now. He looks great being that old. 🤦‍♂️ Also, its spelled Bismarck!

Excellent point on the age! I also corrected my spelling on Bismarck where I could!! Thank you for your comment and correction!
