I'm a Master Fitter/Builder, you play a urathane ball for the green side and pitch shot spin, you play a companies spinny or not spinny ball based of your mid iron spin rates to help get the height and stopping power needed to hold greens, then fit your driver to the ball and spin numbers you get. So if you end up needing a spinny ball to help you get to 45deg of landing angle then you'll probably end up in a low spin head with a low spin shaft, lets say a paradym triple d and Ventus blue tr or black tr, maybe a va synyster, Hzrdus black, or other shafts like that. Eveyone is different though and we fit to the numbers from trackman not the general theory of what works for most people. I still use the data from the 2021 test mygolfspy did to show customers the differance in balls all the time, it's one of my favorite bookmarks at work.

According to one maker of high quality wedges, one of the key determinants of spin, particularly on wedges, is where players strike the ball on the face. Pros and scratch handicappers strike the ball on or very near the second groove up from the bottom. Average recreational players, even if they strike the ball quite consistently, tend to hit it on the third and fourth grooves up. Since the center of gravity of the wedge, the part where most mass is concentrated, is at the bottom, the low strike of the pro produces higher spin than the higher up strike of the average player. Thus a skilled pro may get a higher spin rate from a given brand and model of ball even if the pro swings at a slower speed identical to that of the average player. So the amount of spin delivered by a specific ball will depend not only on the speed of the swing, but also where the contact is made relative to the center of mass of the club face. If you use a robot to test, presumably the ball will be hit at exactly the same point, the same groove, at all three speeds you mention. Then the average golfer may buy a ball that your robot test says gives 8850 rpm on an 85 yard shot with a 52 degree wedge at a swing speed of 70 mph, but when he hits that ball at the local indoor range with a launch monitor and screen, he may only get an average of 8000 rpm with a swing speed of 70 mph and his 52 degree wedge. Your tests will be very informative and useful in comparing balls at exactly equal conditions of swing speed and strike point, but you might want to add a caveat that average players may not get the same results, be disappointed, and question your testing, but should keep in mind this effect of where on the face they contact the ball. Also, the maker of wedges I refer to said the location of the mass of the club is more important in generating spin than all of the marketing claims/hype about the highest spinning grooves. However, if an average player uses a ball you have tested with clubs whose grooves have been heavily worn and lost their edges, he will not get and should know not to expect the same spin rates you will get from the robot.

Maybe two years from now, you will add a 70 mph swing speed category for the average woman category. This is faster than the average SENIOR woman. Both groups of golfers have been left out.

I know you surveyed your readers about what golf ball they play, but I'd wager you'd get more readers from the general consumer public if you tested every low priced ball thats not a "Tour Level Offering".

Respect is earned here so if it deserves respect it will get it, but it hasn't earned much the last few models.

Eh, I feel great for beginners. Rather lose a 2$ vs 6$ ball.

Kirkland doesn’t sponsor so it will never get big-sponsor treatment.

I've been actually playing better with the Kirkland balls than with the proV1s because I'm now not playing with the fear of losing a $6 dollar ball. Weird.

Pointless as the ball you pick will be changed in some way by the manufacturer ie, material construction, compression, dimple pattern etc

Critique comment. MyGolfSpy you guys cover way too much on golf ball performance. Don't get me wrong, it's good stuff. But the amount of effort you all put into this content to generally get the same results every year (Titleist continues to be the best and Callaway is getting better). As a superfan, I'm just tired of this content. I just wish you put this much effort into other club testing, shaft testing, etc. just seems like this amount of effort could be put towards something else in golf. It's great how scientific it is, but I can only hear you guys talk so much on how ultimately at the end of the day everyone should just play something from Titleist's lineup based on their numbers. Which is also why this test just is hard to appreciate. At the end of the day you've gotta just get fit on a Trackman with different golf balls.

Hey Ramsey - interesting take here and appreciate the comment. I will say other than the robot aspect (and the Arizona heat) just as much time and effort go into our club and product testing all year round. Sure - the Ball Test is 'covered' a bit more intensely but soon enough each of our Most Wanted tests will have the same lead up and bits of info given leading up to final results. We do this every 2 years, as to not be repetitive and also to ensure to we provide the full scope of balls that are available at the time. While I'm glad you feel like you have gained and satiated your need for our data and info on golf balls, understand there is a vast majority and readers, old and new who greatly benefit from this test in particular. We're here to help all golfers - if you have any questions about this or any of our other tests, always feel free to message us at any time. Thanks for watching :)

We do put this much effort into every test we complete. Moving forward, you'll be able to see that as we do a better job documenting the depth to which we go for every piece of equipment. In terms of golf balls, frankly, what you perceive as the "same results' isn't accurate. Performance changes. Sometimes it's small and sometimes it's greater than that. But unless you're willing to look at and document performance incrementally, it can appear as though progress is stagnant. Truthfully, it's anything but that.
