Ah, Scorponok.
One of my childhood dreams was to have a house that looks like his base mode.

Basics on Skylynx?, since he’s clearly the best, bravest, most intelligent and most humble autobot who is getting a new commander class figure in earthrise
And he is Not a Dinobot!
And he got a strange incarnation in the first movie (2007) as a police truck who has a similar in proportions robot mode like ironhide did and is almost the same size as prime
That you Skylynx?
Typhon Tattoo, I can nether confirm nor deny it

The new scorponok in the “earthrise” series is my favorite. His backstory of being the last of his kind because of the quintessons is very tragic and interesting
From Decepticon Headmaster to Predacon to Terrorcon to ordinary Decepticon to the last Scorponok; he's certainly been under a lot of faction names.
I really loved Energon Skorponok. Honestly one of my favourite characters in all of transformers media.
I liked the way Energon Skorponok was presented in the Dreamwave comic. He blasted Starscream with a nearly fatal blow and had the balls to go toe to toe with a newly emerged Megatron. He gave Megatron a good fight, but was defeated in the end. That was one of the best comics I ever read
I agree, Skorponok was the highlight of Energon for me, I loved his design and his character arc

I'd have to say the Marvel Era's take on Scorponok is my favourite, despite the character being evil there was something noble about his character and when he was bonded with Zarak both personalities merged to become something really memorable in terms of character. Right up until he tried to do the right thing by charge head on at Unicron knowing full well that he could die but he did it anyway and Prime told him that he did good, that moment shook me when I read that for the first time.
As ever Chris, great stuff.
Wish more versions of Scorponok were written closer to that. Weirdly enough the closest Scorponok ever got to having this characterization again was probably Energon. This is pretty unfortunate because while Scorponok was one of the better-written characters in the show, the negative reputation of TF Energon, makes it so any element of it is unlikely to persist.
Same, even as a kid I took note of the fact that he was the only Decepticon leader who would, at least internally, give Optimus Prime the benefit of a doubt when Prime approached the Decepticons about a mutual threat, an observation which probably didn't escape Prime either since he's the one he surrendered the Autobots to after Unicron showed up.
I think someone has written a fanfic about Marvel Comics Zarak during his death scene on FF.Net. Believed it’s called ‘His Dying Seconds’ from my recollection.
Yeah, the Marvel Comics were what made Scorponok one of my favorite Decepticons of all time. Kinda wish he had more fictional appearances though...
If I ever get the opportunity to write an official Transformers story, I have big plans for Scorponok. Actually writing a (fan) story right now (literally as I listen to this) that heavily features him. He's like Marvel Scorponok mixed with the intelligence of Thrawn from Star Wars. Seemed like a fun combination in concept, and it still is.
I remember Optimus taking a moment to mourn his death. I had a sad at that.
G1 Scorponok's death by Unicron will always unsettle me.
The thought that a warrior powerful enough to usurp Megatron himself for leadership of the Decepticons meets his end melting alive in incomprehendible agony, desperately asking Optimus his sworn enemy for approval, like a child asking their parent if they made them proud after getting injured in some way, before death mercifully overtakes Scorponok.
The Scorponok character seen in the live action movies was sort of impressive on screen, but had LOUSY toys
Jonathon Worner At least the toys transform. Something Scorponok never did in the movies.
I have the deluxe class version and barely transform it because that robot mode is more like a half-baked fan mode. Giving it an ape-like stance makes it look a _bit_ better but only just. Overall I think the toy is better as a Zoid than a Transformer. Mind you the legends class version did look better in both modes and scales alright with the Voyager Blackout.
I had the tiny version, and it broke.
@@originaluddite Scorponok remade into Death Stinger
@@garthdavis4320 Actually Scorponok did transform in the movies once. From a part of Blackout's helicopter mode into Scorpion mode.

@@Big_E_Soul_Fragment The +force+ has clearly united us here on this comment section, dedicated to an evil robotic scorpion Exeter. To believe otherwise is folly.
I love the original 07 toy of That design
You know, I’ve always wanted to see a version of Energon Scorponok where he and the Terrorcons were actually energy pirates - attacking planets, stealing their energy and leaving worlds. Which could lead them to fighting against both Autobot and Decepticon as a new threat. Which would be awesome.
Honestly, my top Scorponok is the Marvel one, but mostly because I'm really grumpy about how he got done dirty. Furman spent like 20 issues building up the relationship between Scorponok and Zarak, he showed their doubts and struggles and the conflict between the frail, doubtful human and the destructive and battlehungry warrior. And it all culminated so beautifully in him finally finding the balance between those two, brokering a truce and rushing to the frontlines against Unicron, sacrificing his life in an attempt to delay the Chaos-Bringer for even one more second. It's honestly one of the best arcs the comic ever got.
And then Furman brought him back from the dead, ditched nearly all his character development in favor of giving him his much less interesting IDW personality, and turned him into yet another generic mad scientist so that he could fill a couple issues with a really dumb plan and kill off Scorponok again at the hands of Grimlock. Man, fuck Regeneration One.
Mister Bad Guy Technically, the Scorponok in Regeneration One was just a duplicate with Scorponok's former personality, before his bonding with Zarak. But I do agree that it undoes his character development.
Huh, what is it with Transformers characters who nobly sacrificed themselves being revived or reanimated as a mindless version of their former selves.
G1 Optimus Prime (Dark Awakening)
Beast Wars Dino Bot
Armada Starscream
Energon Scorponok
and Marvel Scorponok too.
@@R0-83-RT Technically, Dinobot II was just a clone of Dinobot, without his spark or memories. In Nemesis, Part 2, it may have been the spark of the original Dinobot that was influencing Dinobot II after Rampage's death.
@@charliedixon4465 I know, but it still does follow the same pattern.
@R0-83-RT I agree. Dinobot II was originally planned to be a regeneration of the original Dinobot, as hinted by his toy's bio.
Been a fan of Scorponok since his MARVEL G1 days, one of the best written characters of the series.
His lines in the Headmasters dub were god tier quality, too.
*"FORTRESS MAXIMUS HAS COME HIMSELF!"*
Marvel Scorponok > all other Scorponoks.
Banana
Agreed, Budiansky made him a smart, calculating villain where Furman developed the character making him honourable. There isn't too many Decepticon leaders that had an arc like Scorponok's that had trouble keeping his troops on side. The intrigue was more complex than the usual Starscream shooting Megatron in the back type storylines. It was amazing writing by Furman.
Personally I like the Energon version the most. Both the cartoon and comic versions had interesting and well developed stories, I love how the toy combines the scorpion mode with aspects of heavy construction machinery to go with his purpose of revitalizing Unicron, and it pulls off it's space cruiser third mode much better than the original toy did it's city/base mode.
Space Mafia Scorponok from the IDW comics would be a close second.
It's cool that he is finally getting a toy comparative in size to Fort Max, but honestly Scorponok doesn't NEED to be huge to be a large and in charge interesting Decepticon.
I was given Scorponok for Chrismas in 1987 and I still have him. I'm looking forward to the Earthrise figure.
I grew up knowing about the Beast Wars and Energon Scorponok. They were my favorites, and I loved how Beast Wars Scorponok clicked his claws rapidly. It was just so funny to me
I remember getting a scorponok from a second hand market but it was broken.
I feel ya. Got mine at a garage sale way back in the 90s, and was missing everything. Still have him despite the ravages of time eating away at his screws.
the saddest story I've ever heard
I really wish the titan class Scorponoks actually had proper tails. I love scorpions and seeing those tiny dingy little tails at the back just makes me shake my head.

@@mitchfletcher2386 I like the g1, animated ,unicorn trilogy and the Netflix trilogy of scorponok
I think in my own transformers universe scorponok was a Innocent cybertronian from a another planet until he was enslaved and tortured and forced to bow to the quintesson alpha and they destroyed his people 25 years when the autobots and decepticons found scorponok in a abandoned quintessons (ship which he'd killed its crew) scorponok mistaken the autobots and decepticons as suffices to the quintesson so he almost destroyed them until optimus prime and megatron kicked him and thrown 5 grenades at him letting him to float in space. 6 millions years later after the autobot and decepticon war came to an end so did the end of quintessons, the human character named porter C. Powell once a CEO of his company Powell motorwolks and boss of sumdac robotic Industries (until the autobots and sari resuce isaac sumdac from the decepticons) and was about to be elected as mayor of Detroit until he was defeated by the junkion transformer Wreck gar. Now broke and now had to work at a low paid diner. He suddenly came to face to scorponok when he was Buried in lake in Canada. He help scorponok and rebuilt him into a headmaster (which porter stole Henry Masterson blueprints when he'd died) and together they seek revenge on there enemies and recruited decepticons to become headmasters, targetmasters, and powermaster as a small but powerful army.
Early Squad, Transform, and Rise Up!!
@023 Studios you transformed into a ball and you're in a chair above the ground so that counts!!
Remember that time in Transformers Energon when they set up a fairly interesting character arc for Scorponok, followed it through to the very end and closed it out with a largely satisfactory ending? Imagine if they'd done that with literally any other story arc from Energon.

It was always hilarious to me how he always hid in the shadows early in The Headmasters when everyone knew exactly who he was already.
07 movie scorponok was the 1st transformer I ever bought. This character holds a special place in my heart.

Realy? I unlock Scorponok yesterday in "forged to fight"...
Before watching I'm kind of curious if there's a version of this character I don't know about that somehow has nothing to do with scorpions
Well, Beast Wars Scorponok apparently used to be a six-wheeled car. That probably counts.
Furmans run on the IDW comics made me fall in love with Scorpinok, since the only previous versions I knew of were the Live-Action and Energon versions. The Machination subplot is surprisingly fun to run.
Chazzy seing you here.
D'awww, great ep, but now I'm just reminded of how lame Scorponok's exit in IDW was. Who kills him? Grimlock? Magnus? The Scavengers? ANYONE he had history with over the course of IDW? Naw, some new dude in Ratchet's ex's clothes.
Sometimes people die in the randomest and unsatisfying of ways. Not a direct quote from the Wreckers, but the Wreckers had the same idea
My favorite version of Scorponok is the Marvel Comic version. I remember buying issue number 2 of the Headmasters limited series, with Scorponok in scorpion mode squarely on the cover, in the summer of 1987. His relationship with Lord Zarak was a very interesting one, whether written by Bob Budiansky or Simon Furman.
I also like the IDW version as well.
I always thought that Beast Wars Scorponok was actually one of the more competent Preds, because of his technical abilities in creating those bee drones and appearing during battles out of nowhere one shotting the Maximals with his rockets.
I agree and how could he mention Beast Wars Scorponok without mentioning the aggression virus he developed.
Well, I guess that's why he was second in command.
CelticVictory the aggression virus was supposed to be a cowardice virus. Seems to me that doing the exact opposite of what was intended doesn’t speak well to Scorpie’s competence. Also the Cyber-bees really only came up once or twice.
@@magnusprime962 Doesnt matter. It still damaged the Maximals and nearly killed Optimus.
If he was in a video game, he’d be cheap shooting you like the shot gunners in Doom I & II and make you toss your controller at a wall.
I LOVE scorponok’s robot mode, I wish he had more recognition
My favorite version is actually the Energon one.
His character may well be the best part of that less than stellar show.
Runner up is the IDW version, cause he was just creepier lol
I remember loving the energon version. My friend had his toy and it was amazing
I know he's been talked down on a lot, but I still like the Beast Wars' Scorponok. I mean counting his loyalty level and the bee drone, he was almost like that era's Soundwave and I think they just need a kind of spotlight story to show he can be more that what the beast wars show, showed us.
It's notable that he was Megatron's ONLY truly loyal soldier before Inferno's arrival. Tarantulas was a king of scheming, Blackarachnia was his understudy per se, Terrorsaur had Starscream-esque delusions of grandeur, and Waspinator was only loyal out of fear. It's impressive he was even able to do the stuff with his cyberbees given that even Waspinator could outwit him, haha.
RID was definitely the lamest, like Kickback, he had no similarities to the original at all beyond his beast mode. At least Energon looked like the G1 bot for the most part.
I'm honestly really happy hes finally getting a toy that matches his rival, the fact they were able to reference both The Rebirth and The Headmasters is a huge bonus.
I managed to find the G1 Scorponok with all its weapons and accessories at a second-hand toyshop for a (relatively) measely £150. It sounds like a bomb, but when you see how much Scorponok with all its pieces sells for on ebay, you'll see it was quite the bargain!
Got it for a steal..good find
And here, I only knew him from Beast Wars
My favorite version of Scorponok, is from Energon.
My personal favorite is Energon Scorponok since he was first version I saw. Second would be the movie version.
Wouldn’t it be cool if they released a G1 Scorponok that can combine with Trypticon?
Show Scorponok: Sneak or valiant soldier
Comic Scorponok: Noble warrior or cruel and egocentric "scientist"
Movie Scorponok: Just a crazy pet
My dream version of Scorponok: Just Dr. Weird
Very interesting character and alternate leader ... good material for the movie when Megatron is killed off
And hopefully I'll be able to buy the new version of the toy when it hits here in Hamilton Ontario Canada LoL. Take care and have a good weekend

The Maketoys version does seem really awesome. I want one, but Melania says it's too expensive....
Scorponok has certainly become more popular with the release of his Earthrise figure, as he's now been added to Earth Wars and the Earthrise cartoon

I remember his death scene in the marvel comic, god it was good
“The decepticon symbol is his weakness”
Thanks to my mom being into the Zodiac BW Scorponok was my very first Transformer.
Movie Scorponok is actually my favorite, because he fits right in with the movie versions of Frenzy, Laserbeak, and Ravage as, essentially, a new cast of cassette bots for Soundwave.
Despite Energon being kinda the worst, I still like the concepts behind the character in that series
It’s sad that I can’t remember him being in The Rebirth
Scarlet Rain It was his first (and last) appearance in the series.
The scorponok I grew up with was the unicron trilogy scorponok from energon cause i grew up with the Unicron trilogy
Hotdamn! Such a blast from the past. I remember reading the issues were he fought with Shockwave and later when Unicron melted nim. One of my favorite stories. It may not seem so special but it made me, a small Polish boy, very happy those 30 years ago.
Has anyone realized he hasn’t made the basics on optimus prime yet?
Why waste it now? Build up a humongous character like that. You dont just waste Optimus Freaking Prime
Fun Fact: in RID 2015, Scorponok had a sort of brother named Paralon...who was designed after his Beast Wars incarnation!!!
My favorite version of Scorponok has to be the Marvel Comics version. He has many aspects that remain prominent with other iterations of the character altogether. Like his other G1 counterparts he took the position of Decepticon leader, Like his beast wars incarnation, he had a strong sense of loyalty, and like his Energon incarnation, he nobly sacrificed himself.
Chris McFeely do you use DVDs or Blu-Rays for the footage of the Beast Wars cartoon because I would like to know.
I believe this is a rip of the Australian DVD. It's actively better quality than the US DVDs; something to do with the change from NTSC to PAL format, I assume.
So technically,
G1 scorponok was a transtector too.
Those who agree say aye.
10:16 it's always a unique kind of concerning when the plans of a villain begin to involve human fetuses.
February 2nd and I am still waiting on my Generation Selects Black Zarak.
This may seem blasphemy but the only scorpinok I like is the movie version. Mostly because of the tie in video game
The japanesse headmaster concept of small robots and transtectors makes more sense to me. But scoropnox and zarak defintly show the story potential of the symboytic human transformer relationship.
One weird thing is that in Forged to Fight, the only other Beast Wars Predacon in the game...is Scorponok? And Transmetal Cheetor is in it to for some reason.
"Fortress Maximus has come himself!" - Scorponok, spoken like a true hero.. erm, villain.
For me the old Marvel comic Scorponok will be always the number one. His fight with Shockwave was so epic.
I agree that BW Era Scopinok never really developed much as a character. It's sad that he didn't have a character arc, as I felt like there was a lot potential there. His personality had so many 'tics' to it, I often wondered why, what happened to make him that way and what did other characters, like Dinobot, for example, know about him that made them so contemptuous of him? There were a lot of questions never answered. It's a shame; maybe when they do the Beast Wars movies, they'll dig deeper into these characters' backstories. Quick question: are you ever going to do a "Basics" video on BW Dinobot?
I like G1 Scorp, but for me, BW, Movie & Energon Scorponok for me; can we plz get BW & Energon Scorponok again? (Stephen Keener (G1), Don Brown (BW), Colin Murdoch (Energon) really give off that vibe)
One of my favorite representations is where he had a cobra head instead of his poison stinger. I remember they would argue amongst each other in the cartoon.
That's Quickstrike from "Beast Wars" - a different guy, but a much more fun one than BW Scorponok was if you ask me!
@@ChrisMcFeely Quickstrike was more of a mindless goon than Scorponok. The latter could be his own brand of crafty when he wanted to be.
OK those black Zarek colors are just awesome like the literal definition of awesome on scorpionok
I really prefer the Japanese transtector style headmasters over the US style Nebulans. The idea of a sub group of small, fuel efficient Transformers, who eventually build themselves bigger bodies they can interface with in times of need makes more sense to me than Transformers willingly giving up part of their autonomy to a human-like species, the benefit of which never becomes fully clear (especially since it seems to HAMPER the couplings that have clashing personalities). The Nebulans from the Marvel comics are much better than the ones from the Rebirth, though. Also, Scorponok's Japanese names make no sense. You'd expect Scorponok to be the name of the form that looks like a Scorpion, no? ;P
Stoked for the Earthrise Scorponok reissue, followed by Black Zarak in a couple months, though.
There are things i like about both the US and Japanese versions. Personally, i think the Nebulans should have been a colony of small Cybertronians who fled Cybertron to escape the war. The American commercials portrayed the Nebulans as small robots, which i think would have made more sense going forward. After all, they later came up with characters like Doubledealer's Powermaster partner Skar, who was basically a Cybertronian bat like Ratbat. The Headmasters anime portrayed the Targetmasters as small Cybertronians partnered with larger ones, and IMHO that's how all of the "Master" type Transformers should have been portrayed.
Can we get a basics video on steeljaw? He was an actually good villain in the RiD 2015 cartoon and I wonder how they handled the name prior
Scorpnok was my least favorite beast wars character because anything you can do with him you have a more enjoyable character to do it to

Goon waspinator
I just received a used, but complete, Energon Skorp', and love it! Wish I still had the original from my childhood....but, nonetheless, this is a nice addition to my steadily growing collection as an adult.
Scorponok's bee needs his own episode.
I love how in G1 he is one of the largest, but in the bayformers he is one of the smol bois.
I’d like to see one on Ratchet.
Especially because he was a badass in Transformers Prime
I always liked the portrayal of Scorponok at the end of the Marvel G1 comics. He seemed more intelligent, more reasonable and at the same time more manacling than in most of his other appearances. Out of all the Decepticon leaders, he's probably my favourite because of his Marvel comics portrayal.

ABSOLUTELY LOATHED THE HEADMASTERS IDEA BACK IN THE DAY
Having said that i wish they would do an English dub of the Japanese series
So...I think I might be the only one to say this. The only thing of any value in revenge of the fallen and all of the bay films was jet fire. The only part of any of them I found entertaining and I was miffed they killed him right after that scene where he one punched scorpinok
Also does anyone else find it weird just how fragile they bayformers are?
No just me mkay
Don’t you mean “Scorpinok”? And is Devil Zedd related to Lord Zedd?
Jokes aside, I love how universal every Scorponok design is.
'Puh-Prime...? Did...did...kuuu...I do...Good?'
'Yes, old friend...you did Good...'
Lord Zarak/Scorponok had one of the most fascinating character arcs in all of the Marvel G1 comics, going from Zarak's beginnings as a misguided Nebulan patriot being corrupted by the sheer bloodthirsty power that he gained through merging with Scorponok, until finally his underlying inferiority complex due to being, at heart, just a puny fleshling underneath it all would ultimately drive him to what I still say is one of the most touching deaths in all of Transformers fiction to date, and certainly the most heroic Decepticon death of all time...and what's more, a rare Marvel G1 death in that it took place with nary a cosmically-powered Starscream in sight, yes?!
(In fact, I recently brought a very nifty piece of artwork based upon Marvel Scorponok's final moments drawn by artist John-Paul Bove at a convention here in the UK, and I highly recommend it - click bove.bigcartel.com/product/on-the-edge-of-extinction-poster to see it for yourselves, yes?)
PS: One of my favourite G1 Scorponok moments apart from his death might be his appearance in 'Aspects of Evil', where his sheer cunning puts the Autobots in a classic no-win situation (see tfwiki.net/wiki/Aspects_of_Evil! for more...).
PPS: Interesting as the idea of Lord Zarak being replaced by his son as Scorponok's Headmaster partner undoubtedly is, I for one think it would have been even more interesting to have his original Marvel Comics daughter, Llyra, replace him in the role instead; as you could then get a hitherto pacifist character binary-bonding with Scorponok in order to find out what happened to her estranged father, and then being slowly corrupted herself in the same way that he was...
(Plus, it doesn't hurt that she had an...interesting fashion sense, to say the least, yes? See tfwiki.net/wiki/Llyra to see what I mean...!!!).
Bit of iffy memory which version of Scorponok I get to know first; BW or TF Energon one. The only Scorponok toy that I have is his Kre-O Micro Changer toy and while his upcoming ER toy would be more epic one to have, it would be too much for me.. ^^; I could settle for his Botcon 2014 toy or 3P Iron Factory's little Scorponok toy.
Man you did A LOT of work on this one. Excellent episode
10:52 as I understood at the TF Wiki page, Olin Zarak is known as Olin WITHWICKY, and is grandson of Spike, being Son of Daniel. So Scorponok and Foretress Maximus crossed bloodlines
american transformer names: wheeldeal, spinout, jetstream, fast guy
japanese transformer names: god raijin, ultra Leo, lunos-EX
Idea for Scorponok: An ex construction worker turned decepticon inventor, going through an identity crisis after he became a headmaster
Scorponok tearing huge chunks from Unicron's ankles before being melted to slag..... going down swinging, boss style!
If Scorponok renamed himself MegaZarak and BlackZarak in the Japanese continuity. Then why wasn't he just called Zarak. It makes more sense right.
Literally came to this video just to try and understand this lol
Especially since Scorponok's true form in Japan is Zarak and not the giant robot
