Running lights are lights than are illuminated with the engine running, they are not parking lights. Motorcycles and some riding lawnmowers are equipped with running lights. Parking lights are operator controlled. Some German cars are equipped with separate left and right parking light circuits. Side markers are additional parking lights required in some countries where the light source of the front parking lights or taillights cannot be seen from the side of the vehicle. Third brake lights are actually called Center High Mount Stop Lights (CHMSL), for example a 1994 Ford mustang has 2 brake lights per tail lamp making the CHMSL the 5th brake light. The "4th brake light" is actually a rear fog light required in some countries. It's easier to wire it as an auxiliary brake light as opposed to wiring a switch and an amber indicator on the dash to remind the driver that this light is on (like high beams and turn signal indicators in your gauge cluster).

Hi FlyRyde, I was wondering if you could share some knowledge with me. I'm working on a custom motorcycle project. I purchased sequential led strip light turn signals with two color diodes, white and amber. The white are to remain on unless the turn signals are activated, but I need a "switch devise" of some sort to allow that to happen? I have watched several videos showing a small rectangular box, but they apear to be part of a kit (that I unfortunately did not know I needed to buy). What is that device called, and could you point me in a directing to purchase what I need? Thanks

I've always had it explained as this, headlights are the glass and these days plastic units typically using an H4 bulb in older vehicles and motorcycles. It's just a single round lamp that produces light.
Headlights are an entire unit with 1 or 2 beams and turnsignals.
The insides aren't chrome, it's a nickle coating and very delicate. The inside of headlights and lamps are called shrouds not whatever lens as explained.

Rear Fogs a Euro thing that is required for cars in times there are low visibility on the autobahn. Its where you have a red brake light that run once you switch it on and run all the time(bulb is ran at 100% brightness) usually its only on one side of the car and VW/Audi will usually use one of the reverse lamps as the rear fog light and the other will be regular reverse light. Sometimes they even have drop in lens to change the color with out changing the bulb. Like the MK5 Golf has drop in reverse lens that can change from clear to red. Also most of the US models VW/Audi can easily add this feature with some repining of wires and VAGcom/ VCDS/ OBD11 and a bulb change and a euro headlight switch you can have this option on your vehicle. This is all due to the coding already being there from factory and pin positions exist so you only have to plug things in to get them to work.

Now that I have a 3D printer I plan to print my own housing to hold the projectors, instead of using the old reflector bowls. I sort of want to try building a pair of lamps that will move with my steering wheel.

I'm wondering about your light setups on your desk, and the rock lights in the ceiling... If they are car specific lights, how do you do the power step down and/or conversion??? Or do you just use batteries??? I'm thinking about doing something similar myself, with either LED strips or rock lights... Possibly even a dual setup, with rock lights on a row of shelving, for instance 1 set per shelving level, and a set or 2 of strip lights on the ceiling... Then, I was thinking I might put a few PC Fans on the ceiling, with a PWM modulation board controlling speed... It would be an easy way to add air movement, if I can get an adequate amount of power to run along the wires and power them fully... My room will be approximately 8.5Ft x 17Ft, when I get done framing it in, I hope... What are the best bang for the buck brands of wireless controllers, and best outputting strip/rock lights??? Also, is it better to go with regular RGB, or ARGB???

How hard or expensive is it to retrofit HID proyectors into a reflector headlamp?
I have an old 2007 chrysler voyager that came with halogen reflector headlamps and I wanna go HID. It cane with separate bulbs and reflectors for hi and low beam, so it would be nice to get Bi-Xenon on both places for maximum output (I rather go with HID because it is way easyer to get 5000 and 5500 kelvin lights than it is on LED).

  • @michaelmeisman4731

    Great video.
At 4:25 you say "you can upgrade and put HID inside" that halogen housing. While you can buy one and it will fit, according to the DOT laws and regulations you are not allowed to do it unless the housing states that it is for HID bulbs. This is marked on the housing and generally on the lens .
At 11:45 you talk of load resisters when using LED's. I f'n hate these things. I do my best to never use them especially on motorcycles and scooters. One of the big advantages of LED's are efficiency. They use a fraction of the power required to run incandescent, halogen, or HID lights. On older cars that are not using CAN data bus with light recognition it is completely not needed. You will need to change out the flasher unit to one designed for LED's. Many of the LED flasher units have adjustable pots on them where you can adjust the speed of your flash. I like that. On motorcycle/scooters the power available is very limited and upgrading the 'alternator' is not an option. If you need to watch your wattage usage never use load resisters, buy the flasher unit for LED's.
At 19:45 you mention DRL"s. On one of my personal vehicles the DRL is in reality the low beam bulb. They are running this through a special SSR (solid state relay), that is stupid money to replace. They are actually flashing the high beams at a very high rate so they are not at full low beam brightness but are at DRL brightness. Also if your SSR goes out the entire high and low beams go out. So you then have no lights. Wonderful stuff.
At 20.25 you mention the rear fog light. You are correct that is what it is. But this is all over Europe. Depending upon which side the driver is on is the side you will find the rear fog light, usually. So from factory, depending upon the destination of the car you will have one bulb installed for that side. If it is coming to America in general you find that the knock out tab will still be in place on the housing bucket. If you remove that tab you should have access to it. Sometimes it is already wired and sometimes you have to wire it in. I have made them work in hundreds of European cars here in the states.
I have also noticed that using LED's you can mostly eliminate the flicker or dimming that happens with powerful audio systems. Just a thing that I thought was a great feature also.
My son is really getting into your videos. He works for (he asked me not to say) custom car group and is looking to bring these ideas to their bag of offerings.

Thanks so much for the thoughtful response my man! I LOVE when its as simple as swapping a Flasher Relay like on an early Genesis Coupe, or a super common WRX. It always blows when the BCM is responsible for the turn signal instead. And yeah, load resistors suck man, wish they weren't such a practical option :(
