  • Ticketmaster botched the sale of Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour and so many others. It’s gotten so bad - and has angered so many Taylor Swift fans - that in 2023 Congress held a hearing on antitrust law. Since the 1980s a series of policy changes have helped the firm grow to dominate every single aspect of the live events business. And Ronald Reagan is to blame. #TaylorSwift #News #Music

This was excellent. I listen to decoder weekly and my wife listens in when there’s an interesting topic she wants to know more about. However, she doesn’t always have time to listen to a full on podcast. So this direct and engaging video version is perfect for people like her. She loves Taylor Swift, and was interested in the entire situation, but isn’t interested enough in policy to listen to it without visuals accompanying it. So, some honest feedback. Thanks!

i miss buying tickets DIRECTLY from the venue and i miss actually getting a physical ticket that i can pin on my wall. growing up, my mom wouldnt let my sister and i go to many shows; now that im a young adult and have a somewhat comfortable income, i cant go to a bunch of shows like i wanted to as a kid because i cant afford it. oh but that's my """incentive""" to compete in the labor marketplace. funny how normal people are forced into competition with one another but monopolies will never be punished for eliminating theirs.

Hot take, ticket prices are not following basic supply/demand economics. Far more people are willing and able to pay far higher prices than tickets are priced at box office due to higher population and more desirable shows due to increased media propagation, but the amount of seats in any venue generally stays the same, as nobody wants to go to a show where you can barely see the live performing artist. They can perform more shows to keep supply of available seats up, but extra shows cost more money, and if you can't sell out the venue, you risk taking a loss with ticket prices that low.
Artists know this issue, but they also don't want to price their tickets so high as to hurt their public image with the vast amounts of people that CAN'T afford the high in demand tickets if they were priced accordingly to demand (which if they were priced accordingly, tickets wouldn't be near instantly selling out, but rather start higher and move cheaper and cheaper as concert date approaches to offload inventory).
Ticketmaster is simply a scapegoat to take the blame for a bad experience due to wonky economics at play.

There's no monopoly here. If TM charges more in fees don't use them. They will quickly diminish. Concerts events and performers will not or should not go with TM if TM costs more to them unless they see benefit in spending that additional money. By definition this is not a monopoly but it is exactly competion.
