  • Don Carson discusses his excitement about the concept of Melchizedek, a figure mentioned only two times in the Old Testament and once in the New Testament. Carson discusses the significance of Psalm 110 and its relationship to the Davidic line, highlighting the fact that the scripture identifies Yahweh as the Lord of the Messiah, showing that the Messiah is not inferior to David and does not diminish his importance.
Carson discusses the concept of inspiration in the Bible, and his thoughts on the figure of Melchizedek, who is referred to as a priest-king in the Bible. He acknowledges that the concept of a pre-incarnate appearance of the eternal Son and a symbol of the Messiah is complex but of the importance of studying the Bible with care and attention to detail.
Watch Don Carson preach Jesus and the gospel from Psalm 110 at The Gospel Coalition's 2011 national conference at McCormick Place in Chicago.

I discussed this with a pal, who remarked: The one thing he didn't raise is that the virgin birth simultaneously allows Jesus to be both from the tribe of Judah and of a non-Abrahamic priesthood (thus fulfilling Ps 110). Right at the end he mentions Jesus not having an actual mother and father, but missed this opportunity to show how much more perfectly this brings the prophesies together.
This also drives against the RC idea of immaculate conception. I think that the conception was completely supernatural: no egg from Mary, no sperm from Joe.

David wore the ephod (priestly garment), sacrificed ?, and appointed priests (after Doeg had killed all of the priests except Abiather. Was David functioning as a priest in the order of Melchizedek?
