    I have never tried starching my fabric. I don’t think I had a clear understanding of the why and the how, but I do now. I will definitely give it a try.
    Thank you for truly informative video. 🤩🤩🤩

      Your cutting will be more precise, and more important, your piecing will be as well. Definitely worth putting the time in to give it a try. Please note: it will shrink your fabric so if your pattern uses charm squares and the cutting calls for the full 5 inches, starching may not be the way to go.

      Not everyone likes to starch! I really thought I was a better quilter in the beginning bc I didnt starch. I just get better results from starching. I wish I didnt! would be a huge time saver ;)

    Thanks for this. I have been completely lost without my starch. My cutting and piecing are so much more accurate when I can use starch. My fabrics don’t fray as much either. I appreciate that you are honest about the starch going funky fast. I haven’t heard anyone talk about it like you have.

      @beareid6053 glad to help! And yes I starched one group of fabric with funny (older) starch and it made the whole room smell funny as it dried. I immediately washed it all out and started over. I really miss Staflow it was so easy!

      @ I was able to use starlight thinned down in a spray bottle. It was the best for quick fixes.

    Thank you very much for showing us your process. I have been lucky and have been able to find a liquid starch my grocery store. It is called Linit Liquid Starch. Still have a good staff of StaFlo. When it was harder to find and the price started going up, I started buying it all over town and built good stockpile. But I’m glad I watched this because I learned that putting it over two bars I can make it dry faster and less wrinkles. I have an Elna Press and irons out all the wrinkles very well after dampening . I also have a Rowenta Steam Station. Thanks for providing us with great content on your videos. You are definitely one of my favorites.

    Thank you , I do plan on using this. I never use it before, but after watching your videos I could see the difference and was using best press and really saw the difference in how the quilts turned out. But that is very expensive if you do any quantity of quilts and I do a lot. So thank you I will be trying this. And again thank you for your videos and recipe for starch. Have a great day😊

      @judyzeigler3980 best press is very nice! I keep it in my spray bottle on the ironing board when I didn't soak starch, but it does get pricey!

    Living in Australia, we don’t get a lot of the products you get in the USA. I used a starch when I was just a kid on a dairy farm starching all the doilies, I recently found that same Silver Star Starch again, absolutely love it, and my fabrics are beautifully starched. If I run out, I use the cornflour recipe.

    I have been playing around trying to “perfect” my starch. Along with the starch I also add a little Dimethicone and borax. The heating process is definitely the biggest challenge. When I’m ready to use the starch I add a few drops of scented oil. So far I’ve had pretty decent success. 🤞🤞 I store the starched fabric in a sealed tub until I’m ready to use it.

    Hey Kelly... Do you starch batiks?
    I bought a quilt kit with batik fabric. Not sure if I should starch or not. Thanks!

      Sometimes :) I dont sew just a ton with Batiks but they have less stretch and probably need it less, but If Im starching anything else in that project Ill go ahead and starch it too.

    Thank you for taking the time to share this with us. It must have taken you a long time to set up all of the equipment. I looked on google and both Amazon and Walmart sells StayFlo. I’m assuming it’s different ingredients?

      Months ago, the 64oz Stayflow bottle was $3ish at Walmart. Now its $15-30 for the same size. The manufacture quilt making it. bummer. But we will figure it out , right?

    I have been making my own starch this way for a while. I am very impatient so i typically bring all but 1 cup of water to a rolling boil. Mix 2 tablespoons of starch with the 1 cup of water i set aside. Once water boils, pour in that 1 cup of starch water and whisk. Usually only takes a minute or two for it to get translucent and thicken up. Once it's thickened a bit more than i like, i will add more water to thin it to my favorite consistency and then add it to my garden sprayer and let cool before i put the pump on it.

    Can you show yardage. I really struggle with starching background and backing,,

    • @pickinstitches
      @pickinstitches  22 дня назад

      I do everything the same. If it is more than 4 or so yard you might think about hanging it out on a clothes line, but my drying rack does most things. I steam iron will handle any creasing from the rack if it a larger fabric.

      I did, and it was not giving me the shelf life I hoped for. I recently had someone suggest that I boil all the water first, so thats is next on my list to try.

      I have not, but I am a quilt washer- even before I gift them so its generally not on there long. Ive had some FQs starched for 6-8 months so far with no issue, I just havent sewn them into a quilt yet.

    I was concerned that my fabric would stink after it’s applied. I don’t always have time to finish a quilt in a short time. Do you notice any funky smells?…I would never think of having an unfinished project before beginning a new one, wink wink…😂

    • @pickinstitches
      @pickinstitches  24 дня назад

      Nope! If the starch is fresh when applied it's been fine. If you put it into a jug and try to store it that is where I thought it smelled bad.

      @ thx for info. I’ve struggled with good starching ideas since Sta-Flo went off the market.

  • @marciahowe9555
    @marciahowe9555 22 дня назад +1

    The reason your starch gets 'funky' is because you are using water that hasn't been boiled. If you boiled all the water, that would kill any organisms that can cause it to start spoiling/fermenting. Try a batch at the strength you like but use ALL the water from the beginning, cooking it all bringing it to a boil. Yes, this requires us to plan ahead but I think that will solve the 'funky' problem.
