  • The Wine Bottle Stopper is probably the easiest project to get started with on the metal lathe. I use a Myford Super 7, but any lathe, even a micro lathe will be well capable of making the wine bottle stopper! This is the best project as a starter exercise on a metal lathe.
This wine bottle stopper makes the ideal gift for someone who likes wine. It becomes an even better gift knowing it was hand made.
I made mine from Aircraft Grade Aluminium 6082. It was stock I had available, and is easy to cut. I would recommend mild steel, for obvious rusting reasons. Stainless, Brass, Bronze or Copper would also look great, but are expensive if it is not material you have to hand.
The maximum outer diameter of the wine bottle stopper is 34.0mm. You could go as small as 29.0mm to make a seal in wine bottles in the UK/Ireland, but I felt that 34.0mm gave a good size head to grip when inserting or removing it from a wine bottle.
I also machined the head top flat, with a slight bevel in the top. This was to allow it to be placed on a table facing upwards so that the neck did not have to touch the ground. Perfect for taking wine on a picnic or to the beach, without the neck getting dirty and contaminating the wine!!
I also made a double diameter neck, so that slightly smaller wine bottles could also be sealed. Measure your favourite wine of choice and make the diameter of the neck to fit. I also used silicone O-rings to make a perfect seal. This prevents the bottle leaking in your bag.
The 3 grooves in the head were to help grip the wine bottle stopper for inserting/removal from a bottle of wine. You could alternatively knurl the head which would also give a nice finish.

Looks decent, you have two sections of o-rings though, why? Two different bottle diameters? I assume it aluminium?

Hi, the 2 sets of o-rings are for 2 different bottle opening diameters. So it can be used on two different sizes of wine bottle. And yeah, its made of Aluminium 6082.
