It looks like a log splitter to me. It's driven by a engine or motor at a fairly low speed, as it's turning you jam the center of a log into it and it threads itself into the log like a lag bolt, as it goes deeper the "lag bolt" gets wider and wider splitting the log into 2 or 3 pieces. the other thing needed is a way to keep the log from spinning with it which is not difficult.

    Grazie e a presto.

      grazie :)
no, ti assicuro che non è pericolosa quella sporgenza, il pezzo è massiccio e tiene benissimo. Sarebbe stato pericoloso se il diametro del pezzo fosse stato 30 mm o meno...

seeing the chuck key in the socket of the chuck without your hand on it just scares the crap out of me. ALWAYS take it out. WHENEVER IT IS IN THE CHUCK YOUR HAND MUST BE ON IT. I have seen serious injuries caused by the spindle starting wit the chuck key in the chuck

Tracy Lemme...Yes, I agree. I operated a manual metal cutting lathe for almost 20 years and that is how I taught myself. I wasn't "perfect" about it but darn near "perfect". My chuck key's home was on top of the lathe, above the motor and pulley housing. If it wasn't there, it was in my hands opening or closing the spindle. In my 20 years, I must have opened & closed the spindle jaws hundreds of thousands of times. I did a lot of mass production of parts and I will confess that when it would take less than 10 seconds to open the spindle, take out the part and put another part in and tighten the jaws, and I had many hundreds of the same part to do, that I would sometimes just leave the chuck in the jaw. I knew that doing that was not the safest thing to do, but I did it anyway.
And once...just once...I got distracted and forgot to take the chuck key out of the jaw and pushed the on button. The key slammed onto the floor and went sliding across the shop floor. That really scared me. Thankfully, I was not standing in the path or I would have been really hurt. No one else was in that part of the shop so that was a huge relief. I think that from then on, whenever I opened the jaws, I took the few extra seconds to take the key out and put it on it's home spot, even though in just a few more seconds I would be reaching for the key to tighten the jaws.
Yep, just like you said, Tracy...my chuck key was supposed to be either in my hands or at home spot.

If you put the piece in a 4 jaw you wouldn't have to take such small cuts. Take your apron off honey haha.
