    I am in my 50's and just retired. I have been riding since I was 13 years. I have ridden and owned many bikes through the years. Currently own 6 bikes, Indian, BMW, Harley, Kawasaki, Husky and of course 2012 Goldwing. I have tons of experience riding fast, slow and long distances and two up rides. I can tell you there is no other bike out there that I trust when doing long distance touring than the Goldwing. I also race my goldwing with other bikers through twisty and they can not believe how that bike moves. If I were to get rid of all my bikes, the one that would stay is the Goldwing. The only way to replace a Goldwing is with another Goldwing!!!

    After a lifetime of riding (67 years) and over a million kilometers of driving on two continents owning dozens of bikes, I finally bought a 2003 Goldwing and haven't looked back. It does everything that my many bikes before simply couldn't do. At 79, I can ride this beauty for a full day of riding and come home refreshed. Wind in your face, and noise gets old very quickly; curvy roads and amazing acceleration never gets old, and the Wing has it all. IMO, once you own a Wing, there is simply no where else to go motorcycle wise...

      I started riding at 12 years old, same as you. My cousin let me take his 175 cc street bike for a solo spin down a paved road at night. Told me to see how fast it would go, so I did. My first ride, and I was hooked. First, an Allstate (Styer-Damlier-Puch) scooter, then a BSA 350, 1974 Yamaha 650 twin, Suzuki GS650 G (loved to rev), and in the last two decades, a GL1100, a GL1200 Limited (fuel injected) and since two weeks ago, an ‘04 GL1800. I’m 71, still touring out of Alberta and loving every ride. Lucky to never crash and have generally had good luck over 300,000 miles of riding. The Wings just got progressively better over the years, but I found the ‘85 to be cumbersome and the extra 200 pounds over the 1100 also made for slower throttle response. The first 1,200 miles on the 1800 have left me mightily impressed! Good riding to you Bob.

    • @TOURMANBOB
      @TOURMANBOB 9 месяцев назад

      Thank you sir. I do find this year at 79, my get up and go, got up and went to some degree. I have given up a lot of sporting things i used to do...boating (gone), IPSC competitive handgun shooting (cant move fast enough anymore), and have taken up more docile sporting things...DJI droning, RC plane flying....things that don't involve a lot of hard physical activity. But the bike will stay , even just to look at it gives me pleasure. Even if I go for a ride a couple of times a year, that will be sufficient . I'm pretty much done with the 500km per day runs, or at least without quite a few breaks along the way.
      The Wing truly is in a league of it's own. I hope you can age gracefully and still continue to enjoy your Wing. Believe me , it will age much better than you or I. And I hope you have many more miles of riding ahead of you.

    Damn! I fit most all your stereotypes in this video. I’m 68, retired, and have a 21 Goldwing. Most of my motorcycle life I rode cruisers because I wanted to look cool. Late in life I realized I didn’t care what I looked like I just loved to ride. I traded in my Fatboy for a ST1300 and fell head over heels back in love with motorcycling. A turkey took it out just before I retired in the middle of the pandemic and parts were hard to come by. I told the dealer to keep the ST and give me that shiny new Goldwing. 36,000 miles later and looking at 70 heading right at me I’m a happy guy!

    A friend and I were going camping in southern Indiana. He had his little Japanese hot rod car and me my Goldwing. He couldn't believe the power of the Goldwing as I always left him for dust at every traffic light. They're a beautifully engineered machine and worth every penny when you consider how long they last if they're taken care of. Of course living in the Midwest I was always asked why I didn't buy a Harley, my usual response was that I didn't want to ruin my garage floor with oil stains. I think they're a far superior bike than any model Harley, but that's just my opinion.

    Had my first Goldwing, a pre-owned 1975 GL1000 at age 18 which I dressed and added a radio/ cassette, then had a brand new 1980 GL1100 Interstate. Fast forward to 2014 when looking for a mint pre-owned GL1800 a stumbled across an imported (to UK) Jan '81 GL1100 Interstate with only 19k miles having been owned by the first owner in Ohio until until he passed away. I had to have it. Six weeks later I found a perfect 2004 GL1800. I'm now 64 and wouldn't be without either them. I was also fortunate to find a colour matched (almost) trailer specifically made for the GL1500. What a jaw dropping rig.

    As a new, to me, Goldwing owner (1.5 months now) I agree with everything you mentioned. I have an 08 GL1800, and I just wished I had done this sooner in life. I've had several bikes before, and always wanted to own a Goldwing. It was price and size that always kept me from buying one. I'm not sure if i will do any really long trips with it, but I know if I do, I will have a reliable machine that should get me there in as much comfort as possible. I've been watching all kinds of videos on Goldwings trying to learn as much as I can about them, like accessories available, modifications people are doing, how to fix common issues...etc. While watching your last myth, I thought the area looked very familiar to me when you started to merge onto the highway (103, by Inn on the Lake!). I only live an hour away on the South Shore. I think it's cool to watch a video by someone who is in the same neck of the woods as me. Most of what I watch is from the USA or on the other side of the world.

    As an 8yo it was a gl1200 ltd that sparked the rider in my to life when I saw it back in the 80s. I've craved for the 1500 when that came out, but stuck to German and Austrian mopeds for convenience at 16 all the way till my 30th birthday and got my motorcycle license (still no car) with the intent to own a 1500. After some big German tourers and about 10y of riding I got my dream bike. Have daily driven it for years now and have heard all those things... I can ride it hard and love to blast past the fellow biker at the lights or the curves. Usually they are quite surprised how fast and nimble that "couch" is at the next light if they are fast enough....

    Interestingly enough, my Suzuki Boulevard C90T bagger actually weighs considerably more than my Gold Wing. Concerning handling, I was totally blown away by my Wing's handling capabilities when I first rode her. I was expecting her to be a bit "difficult" in turns and such. I about rode myself into a ditch when I went to turn her for the first time because I wasn't expecting that kind of response. I was VERY pleasantly surprised. Thank you for a great video absolutely nailing it re the ethos of the Goldwing.
    As a Biker of 44 years standing, I've never judged fellow aficionados of the two-wheeled regarding their preferred mode of transport, even though I've been unfairly judged myself. C'est la vie.
    Always had a penchant for big bikes from an early age and once I passed my bike test here in the UK aged 17 I rushed out to buy a Honda 750 F1. I was in seventh heaven and up to my scrawny neck in debt. Oh the naivety of youth.
    Being 6'4" and all arms and legs i just couldn't wait to ride a proper-sized bike. This old gal did me well for a couple of years but then I moved on to a second hand Honda GL 1000 (this was circa 1979) I absolutely loved this machine. It was like the F1 on steroids. My then girlfriend, later my wife thought it a far more comfortable ride and we subsequently honeymooned on it to St Ives in Cornwall, me aged 21 and she all of 17. My God those were the days...
    Moving on, my wife got a wee car, i progressed over the span of years to a Honda CBX1000 - 6, a Kawa GPX 1100, a Kawa GPZ 900, a Honda CBR 900 Fireblade, a Kawa ZZR 1100, a Suzuki Hayabusa and now latterly with all three kids flown from the nest (and with kids of their own,) my wife has re-embraced our earlier joint biking passion and last year we bought a 2014 Goldwing GL 1800.
    We love it to bits. Any excuse to get out on it we take.
    As it was we just happened on your video and immediately felt we had to watch it all the way through. Such an engaging piece of video- montage and so aptly put. We think you'll convert quite a number of "unsures" as a result of your sterling work. We'll done.
    Neil&Belinda xx

      Thanks, Neil and Belinda, for your thoughtful comment and positive feedback! It sounds like the two of you have much in common with my wife and me, although you've owned more nice big bikes over the years than we have. I talk a bit about our motorcycling history together in the "10 Things I Love about my Honda Goldwing" video. But in a nutshell, we have the same sentiments you describe. Since we got back into motorcycling together, my wife took the safety course and now has her own bike, so we've taken the hobby beyond where we left off decades ago.
      I think the Goldwing's success lies in how it allows people like us to relive our motorcycling youth in the comfort that our years of hard work and raising kids deserve. Although as your comment shows, these are wonderful bikes for people of any age.
      I wish you both many miles of smiles on your 2014 Goldwing! Cheers!

    I've had an 02 1800 for about nine years now (+ way back an early GL1000) and personally I agree with most of the myths! They're large, heavy, expensive and riding behind the screen on mine (a slightly bigger aftermarket one) is like driving in a car with all the windows open. When you load up the Wing with fuel, luggage, pillion and rider I have a classic car that's not far off in weight. However none of that matters as the Wing is a world unto itself and carp and criticise from the sidelines all you like, it's like water off a duck's back. There is nothing like a Wing and whatever I paid for it it was money well spent. I'd have preferred to be four or five inches taller with another 10kg of muscle to show it who's boss but that's a whole other issue 🤣🤣🤣

    The Gold Wing handles ANY curve with ease, not all riders can but the wing is fully capable. ONE of the fastest times ever recorded on the Tail Of The Dragon was on a Gold Wing GL1800. I’ve rode my 2003 on the Dragon and never had any issues and went well over the legal posted speed limit. Where you feel the weight is in parking lots at very slow speed turns / AKA gas stations. Other than that, the GL1800 can take on any curves no matter how sharp or steeply banked.

      To be clear, Yellow Wolf set the most miles in 24 hours record on the Tail of the Dragon. Any 600 supersport would eat a Goldwing alive in the Tail on 1 pass. I have owned a 2001 GL1800 for a couple of years while living in the Arkansas Ozarks, I know what they can do in the twisties. They are a ball in the twisties, but they are not the fastest thing in the hills at all.

    I owned a 1500 and 1800. The 1500 rode like a big bike...but the 1800 is a large Sport touring bike. With a low center of gravity that handles remarkably in the turns. I led a GWRRA group ride through WV. I mapped out the twistiest roads that I could find. Some in the group were riding two up! When I ride with some of my HD friends in the Adirondacks, any thing other than gentle sweepers results in complaints! That said, there are some HD guys who know how to handle a bike....but they aren't the typical ones.

    Only heavy if you drop it.
    You can get one that's nearly new for a fraction of the cost of a new one.
    You CAN buy a car...but, if you think owning a car is the same as riding a bike - you just don't get it.

    Great video about those common myths! I started with a 1975 Honda CL360 when I was 18 years old. In 5 years I put 28,000 miles on it (including one 3,000+ mile trip to Colorado from Wisconsin). The "twin tingle" (and that hard bench seat) was definitely experienced fully on that trip!
    That fall I bought a Gold Wing (1977 GL1000), as I loved travelling on motorcycle, but needed more comfort. The transition from a small bike to a large one was much easier than I thought it would be (and going back to riding the old one, it felt like a toy).
    Now I've been riding Gold Wings for 40 years -- they're great bikes! Dependable, powerful, comfortable, a little unwieldy in the garage (and I'm only 5'5"), but a great bike to ride. Highly recommended for anyone!

      Thanks for the comment. 3,000 miles on a CL360 would give new meaning to the term "Iron Butt"! And I know what you mean about switching bikes - when I get on my CB400F now, it feels like a bicycle.

      @@MakeFixEngineer They are better than the other generations in most ways with 2 exceptions in my view. First is the luggage capacity decrease. It still works for me but the streamlined style did decrease the capacity. The second issue I have is the electronics. Too reliant on the bells and whistles of electronics, just more stuff to go wrong and be very expensive to fix. If your key fob goes dead, good luck. Just give me a dang key please. Electronic opening bags?? Etc.. Progress according to engineers. Look at the Yamaha T7, back to basics bike as compared to its competitors. Which one do I want out in the boonies? T7 please.

    Currently own a CRF1100 dct, but back in the time I was planning to bought a goldwing first, sadly my bank account won't allow it.
    AT didn't disappoint me at all, eat lots of miles with it and still running smoothly just like day when I pick it up. Create a lot of memories with it and have tons of fun without any complains. But I always wonder what bike should I pick when I'm done off-roading or gravel road.
    Thinking about the goldwing first, naturally. But my friends keep telling me that goldwing is not for me, "goldwing is too big for you", "AT can do everything that goldwing can do without any stress". I was wondering if goldwing is not my choice while these words flying around me.
    Your experience shows me that all these worries are not a big problem at all, goldwing is a gentle beast that needs spend some times with it, just like my AT or any other bikes.
    For now, I'll still stick on my AT for a little longer, then planning to take some test ride and get myself a goldwing in the future.
    Thanks for sharing all these info, I'm sure goldwing will live beyond my expectations with different riding style.

When the Interstate came out I was awestruck, but money was tight in those days so owning any new bike never entered my mind. When I could eventually afford a decent motorcycle, I didn't think to look at the Goldwing. I wasn't as wise in my youth as you and your wife obviously were!

      Glad to hear it, fellow Canuck! With our short summers, it's best to get one as early in the year as possible. You'll thank yourself when you need to park it for the winter and you're wishing you could ride it one more day. Cheers!

      @MakeFixEngineer absolutely 💯 ❤️ 👌.......I love riding up north from Toronto. Currently I'm riding a Triumph Bonneville T100. Goldwing is on my radar for quite some time. Your video was very inspiring

    Well, let's see...
    Been riding bikes since i was 14, now 57. Started with dirt bikes. Bought my first street bike at 26, it was a tired lil KZ400. Rode it for 2 months before it died. Bought a brand new 1994 Goldwing to replace it. Been riding wings ever since. On number 3 now, a 2014 model. Oh, I also have an 08 Harley Street Glide, nice but certainly not like a wing. Not a big fan of the latest version, seems more of a sport tourer and not the grandest tourer they once were. Sadly my current wing may be my last if Honda stay on the current course.

    I bought my Valkyrie in my late forties. I believed in some of those myths. But I couldn't afford my first motorcycle until... Correction. I thought I couldn't afford a motorcycle till I bought my first one around age forty. I bought a VTX 1300.

    I bought an old 2005 Goldwing at 33 and love it! They're awesome. The bike does seem to attract a lot of stupid comments which gets frustrating, but it's many excellent features far outweigh the annoyance of people's idiotic opinions. It even handles better than my previous bike, a CB300R!

    • @MakeFixEngineer
      @MakeFixEngineer  Год назад +3

      Thanks for the comment! You were much wiser at 33 than I was. I had an old 650 Seca when I was 33, and I spent more time working on it than riding it, lol.
      The best comment I've heard was the Goldwing is like "a Hummer on two wheels". I told them that if they'd ride a Goldwing, they'd think of it more like a Bugatti Veyron on two wheels. 😀 Cheers!

    My favorite myth of touring bikes is that they are slow papaw bikes. It seem like them comments come from mostly HD riders. I changed a friends mind up about that one day when i blew his HD Softtail Custom away with my 88 Yamaha Venture Royale. I got my mind set on a 18 or newer Gold Wing now.

    • @MakeFixEngineer
      @MakeFixEngineer  Год назад

      Thanks for the comment. Seems like most people don't appreciate how good these big bikes can be until they ride one. I've never ridden a Venture Royale but I always thought they were very nice. I worry that if I try out a 2018 or new GL1800 that I'll have to buy one. :) Cheers!

      The Venture was basically Yamaha's version of the Wing. But the 83-93 Venture was a totally different animal than the later Ventures. The 83-93 had a tuned down version of the VMAX motor. It was the quickest touring bike when they were produced. You are right about the 18 and newer Wings. I rode a 6-speed demo when they came out and I have been wanting one ever since.

    Well done presentation. Every myth you busted is by-in-large spot on true. There's an expression that "you can't be all things to all people" and as true as this in real-life, especially in relationships, and this is also true with motorcycles. That being said, the Gold Wing is as close as anyone can get with an all encompassing motorcycle. It truly is the jack-of-all-trades or Swiss Army knife of all of motorcyledom. I only wish that Honda would've kept assembly production here in the U.S. and each seat back stamped Made in the U.S.A.!

    • @MakeFixEngineer
      @MakeFixEngineer  Год назад

      Thanks for the comment! I agree the Gold Wing is the closest a bike can get to being "one size fits all". It's too bad they moved production from the US but they still make some fine products in Marysville. My 2016 Accord Sport is one example. After seven years it still feels like new and its 6-speed manual transmission is a treat that never gets old. Cheers!

    Even back before I ever rode, I was interested in Goldwings. I amost bought one, but the listing was a bit sketchy. I went with an 80' Yamaha XS11 instead. Loved that bike, but what I really want is an original GL1000.

    • @MakeFixEngineer

      My neighbour had a 1975 GL1000. It was the talk of the town when he first brought it home. When I had an XS750 Special in the early 1980s, I was in love with the XS11 Midnight Special and probably would have bought one if I'd had the means. I didn't fully appreciate Goldwings at the time. That took me about 40 years, lol. Cheers!

    Been riding for over 50 years and yes have a older Goldwing, a 93 1500, it only has 100k on the clock. Also have a BMW R1150RT. which is a more sporty machine but Mom likes the comfort of the wing on a long trip. For me, the R bike is more of a Sports Touring machine but it isn't all that great for a passenger.

    • @MakeFixEngineer
      @MakeFixEngineer  Год назад

      Thanks for the comment. I've heard the R bikes are awesome machines but I can see why Mom likes the Wing because there aren't many motorcycles with so much passenger comfort. After riding our Wing, my wife had no interest in being a passenger on my V65 Sabre. A Goldwing is a tough act to follow. Cheers!

    At 5:54, you list your bike has a six speaker sound system. I'd like to get that on my 2005 GL1800. Were you referring to a six-element speaker system with 4 physical speakers?

    In 2024 I plan to buy a (used 2000-2010) Goldwing and see the whole Europe (about 30k km, depending on how many cities I plan to see in each country).
    How should I prepare it for such a long trip?
    I'm already aware of the oil and filter changes that I will have to make during the trip. I just want to buy it and send it to a Service.
    I just do not know what should I ask the Service to do to it before starting the trip.
    P.S. Regarding the Myth #5, I am 28yo and I love Goldwing! I just can't wait to sell my Versys and buy a Goldwing.

    What is the Honda Goldwing's performance like on the road?
    If the "Goldwing DCT Tour Airbag" with a single rider on a level road is cruising at a constant 140km/h (86.9mph) in top gear (7th), what would is engine speed be (how much engine rpm)?

    What’re all the lights on your dash as your cruise along?
    I live on an island and I have a GL1833 with an automatic trans. No regrets. I don’t tour with it at all. I’m also in my 30s and have owned Wings for 10 years.

      Thanks for the comment. The lights are "OD" for overdrive, "Cruise On" and "Cruise Set".
