Awesome!!! I went to a lot of concerts in the 70's, 80's, & 90's. The sound of the drums was so huge. Always wondered if any FX was added to them and what kind.
Not bad, but there's a difference between the early eighties and late 80s. 70s and early 80s had the concert toms with no resonant heads, but the late 80s had power toms with the bottom heads on. I'm generalizing, there are always exceptions of course
I'm not really big on stadium rock but you guys did a great job here of recording drums in general and I'm glad you showed the basics of what you did rather than just jumping to the reverb treatment part. That Kate Bush sound is really nice.
Great! I would like to know 'bout that powerful drum sound of '89 and beginning of 90's. Like "Dirt" by Alice in Chains, "Dr. Feelgood" by Motley Crue, "Black Album" by Metallica, "Vivid" by Living Colour. Thanks
That drum sound you demonstrated for Kate Bush was used all over her album The Dreaming. Check out the songs Sat In Your Lap, Leave it Open, The Dreaming, Houdini and Get Out of My House to hear what I'm talking about
Sounds great. I found the tightened drum part informative. I have always thought the best drum sound I ever heard was on Carly Simon's song That's The Way I Always Heard It Should Be. Those toms sound incredible. If you guys could duplicate that it would be awesome and appreciated. Thanks from just another engineer in L.A.
Could you guys please recreate that signature Rick Allen Of Def Leppard Snare Sound? It's a really distinctive sound. Specifically the Hysteria Album??
A reply 1 year later, but the drums on pyromania were all programmed with live cymbal playing. I think the samples were triggered from an AMS delay unit. For hysteria, definitely electronic drums as Rik Allen had already had his accident, but I don’t know how much was played and how much was programmed.
I‘d like to hear how you‘d replicate Peter Gabriels Come Talk To Me. I think it is not typical drumset, but rather different african percussions mixed with concert toms? No idea. But would be highly interested, since this is one of the most appealing and strange percussive tracks I ever heard.
really good video idea, take a look at Shoegazer's "How I record loud drums at home" - He goes a bit through Addictive Drums 2, might get you somewhere
How many tracks were used to record the kit, and were the trigger effects processed pre or post tape? The gates are obviously pre-tape. Trying to recall how we recorded back in the mid 80s.
I know the drums from ‘Fine Young Cannibals’ “She Drives Me Crazy” was a done on a DrumMachine, but I would like to see that snare drum recreated on live drums!, 👍🏾
so what's the 90s hardrock metal drums sound like in comparison ? I've always thought the snare sounded massively different, especially noticeable in metal in those transition years of the late 80s and early 90s.
how to make the early 90's rock drum sound? like Damn Yankees, Ozzy Osbourne (No More Tears), Joe Satriani (The Extremist). the rock drum sounds from 1989 to 1993 was the best drum sounds ever.
Not sure if I missed it but are there gates on the direct mics or that all damping? And what is sending to the reverbs? everything or just direct mics?
Great video! Thanks for sharing. I would most definitely like to know how they got that Nirvana´s Nevermind huge drums sound. To this day is one of the best drums sounds I´ve ever heard. By the way beautiful long dark hair Jessica! I am trying to make mine reach the hips as well LOL. Cheers.
Please break down the drums (Dennis Davis) on David Bowie's 1977 album Low produced by Tony Visconti. I think he used many effects and claims that they influenced future metal drummers although the genre was art rock/proto new wave.
Great vid, but i'm a bit confused on one thing. Those "talk back" mics, are they part of the reverb that you hear at 4:44? Theyre just gated to the snare so they only come on when the snare is hit?
I just rent out a stadium. Lots of empty stadiums these days.
I just get a job at a stadium and play drums there off hours. nude.
The best drum sound ever. Nothing beats a punchy and crisp 80s snare!
how to get reverb by reverb
Cool! Please do 70s Fleetwood Mac/ Eagles / Steely Dan drum sounds! Tight, dry and crisp, would be a cool counterpoint to this vid :)
Steve Gadd! But you're right, dead drums can be a lot of fun too. I enjoy playing reggae with the towels over toms.
LOVE the stadium rock sound.
I love that serie and i’m so happy you did a Kate Bush song :)
Awesome!!! I went to a lot of concerts in the 70's, 80's, & 90's. The sound of the drums was so huge. Always wondered if any FX was added to them and what kind.
Finally! I've been waiting for someone to do this for a long time
Not bad, but there's a difference between the early eighties and late 80s. 70s and early 80s had the concert toms with no resonant heads, but the late 80s had power toms with the bottom heads on. I'm generalizing, there are always exceptions of course
Listening to this particular sound tonight makes me feel like I'm in the air. Feel call ins.
I'm not really big on stadium rock but you guys did a great job here of recording drums in general and I'm glad you showed the basics of what you did rather than just jumping to the reverb treatment part. That Kate Bush sound is really nice.
That isolated Kate Bush drum track sound SO TOUGH , don't know why it's mixed to low in the original.
Great! I would like to know 'bout that powerful drum sound of '89 and beginning of 90's. Like "Dirt" by Alice in Chains, "Dr. Feelgood" by Motley Crue, "Black Album" by Metallica, "Vivid" by Living Colour. Thanks

Silly old me when I heard the drums I didn’t think G’nR I thought Love Stinks by the J. Geils Band, or Leave it Open by Kate Bush. I’m old.
I remember that sound on 90 percent of all 80’s rock songs. I miss it pre digital. Heavy Gates Reverb
It would have been nice to see the actual drummers and engineers who played the parts and got the sounds named in the video.
Large Ludwig power toms have a great sound for 80's tones.
Would love an episode on the sounds of Stax and Muscle Shoals!
Would love that. They have a punchy and powerful mono sound!
try recreating some vulfpeck drum sounds, pretty much all you need is the vulf compressor, gates and some tea towels
Great suggestion!
I would love to hear you guys recreate early Jamaican Sound system, Dancehall and live Dub.
I’d love to have this as a sample pack
This is so damn useful, thank you for making this production videos
So you need all this extra stuff just to recreate an 80's snare drum. Motivating
How about Matt Cameron’s drum sounds on Soundgarden’s Superunknown album?
Go buy a Keplinger stainless steel snare.
2nd this
tooooo..... good guys...... can you'll make a video on Scott Rockenfield drum kit and mix on Queensryche's OPERATION MINDCRIME Album
And that, kids, is why drums sounded awesome back then
Could you guys please recreate that signature Rick Allen Of Def Leppard Snare Sound? It's a really distinctive sound. Specifically the Hysteria Album??

Can never get rid of this sound
Maybe do the same thing but on a budget? Home studio, cheap gear?
Superior Drummer 3, add in reverb and gate plugins coupled with some serious routing. :)
@@LightWingStudios Thanks. But I wish I knew what all that meant. Don't bother telling me, I won't get it.
really good video idea, take a look at Shoegazer's "How I record loud drums at home" - He goes a bit through Addictive Drums 2, might get you somewhere
0:38 - Sounds much similar to 'Listen To Your Heart' by Roxette!
Always did :))
Awesome! Would love to see y'all take a crack at Zappa's drum sound in Packard Goose :-)
LaTigerGenesis HOLY SHIT YEAHHH
Loving these videos. Wish you would play that individual tracks too...
very cool selection of songs!
This sounds 10000000 times more agressive and powerful than any overcompressed metal drums from nowadays.
Black Light Burns "Cruel Melody" I always liked the drums Patrick works up in his Filter projects, but found they are all electronic.
a joy division drum sound!!
How about recreating the intro drums for Dire Straits - Money for nothing?
Host and producer of Eat and Listen channel
Daniel
David Bowie - Modern Love
How many tracks were used to record the kit, and were the trigger effects processed pre or post tape? The gates are obviously pre-tape. Trying to recall how we recorded back in the mid 80s.
Great great great!!!! Thank you for doing this.
i like this sound but so good.
Maybe why not recreating 2000's nu metal drum sounds?
Yeah, the Mutt Lange Def Leppard pyromania would be a good one. It's almost like they're not even drums they sound so modified from a real drum set.
That is because they weren't live drums!
I know the drums from ‘Fine Young Cannibals’ “She Drives Me Crazy” was a done on a DrumMachine, but I would like to see that snare drum recreated on live drums!, 👍🏾
How about Motown drumsound? Would love to hear your take on it.
I personally would recommend less high freq in the reverb. Still good sound
Excellent-great video. Very relaxing to watch-just what we need. How about the drum sounds off of the Who’s “Who by Numbers”?
so what's the 90s hardrock metal drums sound like in comparison ? I've always thought the snare sounded massively different, especially noticeable in metal in those transition years of the late 80s and early 90s.
A lot less reverb. Like they said in the video, they went from adding length to the drums with reverb, to adding length to the drums themselves.
how to make the early 90's rock drum sound? like Damn Yankees, Ozzy Osbourne (No More Tears), Joe Satriani (The Extremist). the rock drum sounds from 1989 to 1993 was the best drum sounds ever.
Not sure if I missed it but are there gates on the direct mics or that all damping? And what is sending to the reverbs? everything or just direct mics?
This sounds awesome guys
when combining the non lin reverb with the long plate, are they running in series or in parallel, You don't seem to explain that...
Hounds of love: best album ever. Songs and production are not of this earth. Best 'larger than live' drumsound? Heart! Epic.
I think he used many effects and claims that they influenced future metal drummers although the genre was art rock/proto new wave.
could you guys include protools templates for the recording?
Great vid, but i'm a bit confused on one thing. Those "talk back" mics, are they part of the reverb that you hear at 4:44? Theyre just gated to the snare so they only come on when the snare is hit?
That snare tone in the studio sounding nothing like the recording of Paradise City.
Thanks for sharing this.
1:57 I'm more curious about what was done in the 90s to enable reverb sounds naturally with the drums.
Larger, brighter rooms and more room mics in the mix
Nirvana had a kick tunnel, built out of a bunch of kick drum shells.
"IT'S IN THE TREES! IT'S COMING!"
Boris Williams (the cure) Disintegration !! 🙏🏻🙏🏻
This is amazing!
I'd like to hear the drum sound from Elton John's Tiny Dancer.
The snare on Prongs beg to differ album , it sounds gated but not. How the hell did Ted Parsons get that damn sound
Love this!
0:25 I played cherry pie riff with that awesome beat....;)
Spot on 👏🏻👏🏻
Uhhhhh could you try to recreate the classic drum sound from the album "Dark Matter Dreams" by Ernesto Foriello?
I always wanted to know how JCM's Jack and Diane drum fill sound in the middle was created.
Playing really hard, tune the snare medium/low. Rimshots on snare. Big room and lots of room mic in the mix
What snare drum is that and in what size ?
Kickass!
I found playing NOT RIMSHOTS on snare makes this sound, just dead center with hard hits
It sounds fuller than the "choked" rimshots
Great job. Time to do a Joy Division drums tutorial.
Def Leppard
Pyromania (Jan.1983)
Robert "Mutt" Lange
damn these drum sounds makes me want to grow a mullet
Good video!
Mac demarco/ lofi Drum sound?
Jessica!!!
feel good!!
The kick has to punch you in the chest, tho.
Maybe the Pantera Vulgar display of power drum sound?
Def leppard vocals
what heads
5:00. Snare tuned too low for my taste. Needs to be higher and tighter to crack. My two cents.
5:40 they use this in Pat benatar's we belong
And here was me thinking drums weren't complicated.
these drums gave me the stank face instantly
What percent is the room sound. Highly not acknowledged
Gated reverb
Very very cool =)
why didn't you just take a shot of the PCM instead of throwing in a shop picture after?
I'm glad rosa can solve her anger issue by playing drum.. maybe she should start a band with doug judy
How about the Def Lepard sound???????
Same thing but with one arm.
@@kingboobs20 not even close.
"Pour some sugar on me!"
you d need a bigger room for that
Dear Bob Rock and/or Lars Ulrich --
This is how you’re supposed to set up and record drums.
Gates & reverb
