    What’s the A League of their Own movie about?
    During World War II when all the men are fighting the war, most of the jobs that were left vacant because of their absence were filled in by women. The owners of the baseball teams, not wanting baseball to be dormant indefinitely, decide to form teams with women. So scouts are sent all over the country to find women players. One of the scouts, passes through Oregon and finds a woman named Dottie Hinson (Geena Davis from Thelma & Louise and Stuart Little), who is incredible. He approaches her and asks her to try out but she's not interested. However, her sister, Kit (Lori Petty) who wants to get out of Oregon, offers to go. But he agrees only if she can get her sister to go. When they try out, they're chosen and are on the same team. Jimmy Dugan (Tom Hanks from Big, Forrest Gump and Philadelphia), a former player, who's now a drunk, is the team manager. But he doesn't feel as if it's a real job so he drinks and is not exactly doing his job. So Dottie steps up. After a few months when it appears the girls are not garnering any attention, the league is facing closure till Dottie does something that grabs attention. And it isn't long Dottie is the star of the team and Kit feels like she's living in her shadow.

    I love how supportive her Raccine teammates were of Kit after she lost the lead. It showed that getting traded to Raccine was the right thing for her. In contrast to when she was on Rockford she had players like Delores who would taunt her and instigate trouble. When I first saw this movie in the theatre as a teenager in the early 90s I was upset that Rockford didn't win because I had gotten to know the players on Rockford. But looking back now, I'm glad Raccine won. And it is historically accurate because in real life Raccine did win the first championship.

    • @Skank_and_Gutterboy
      @Skank_and_Gutterboy 2 года назад +1

      @Kevin Joe Fo
      I can give her a bit of a break because I've seen this kind of thing myself. When this always happens your whole life, it's real easy to see conspiracy and sabotage where there isn't any. Hopefully Kit can get to a point where she can see that, but shit that happens to you when you're 16 has a way of sticking with you. True, Dottie told the coach, "She's done, she's throwing grapefruits, she needs to come out." I hope she realizes later that the coach would've done what he was going to do anyway, is he really going to let a "female wannabe ballplayer" tell him his business? 99% he was going to pull her anyway.
      The best thing for Kit is to get out from under Dottie's shadow, which will happen next year when Kit comes back and Dottie doesn't because her marriage is a hell of a lot more important and her husband may have permanent injuries. That way Kit can sink or swim on her own and know that whatever happens, it isn't because of Dottie's doing or people picking Dottie first because she has more charisma. Growing up, I was the little brother that was always in this same situation. The best thing for me was to leave the house at 18 and start with a clean slate 2500 miles away with my big brother nowhere around, and sink or swim totally doing my own thing. I think Kit needs that.

      Yeah, I remember watching this movie with my older sister and my mom (who is an older sister herself) and both of them being so unsympathetic to Kit. But like…it hurts so much to spend your life being told that whatever you did, whatever you achieved, your sister did it first and did it better. Dottie never really loved baseball as a competition the way Kit did - she didn’t have that burning drive to prove herself. Because once the league was respected, she had nothing left to prove.

    This final game shows why I think they had to write Marla out of the story. If they wanted Kit to be pitching and Dottie batting they needed one less power hitter in the lineup. As Kit got tired before going through the lineup the 3rd time, in the 7th, 8th, and 9th innings, I think Marla would have teed off on one. You can also wonder if it even would have made it to game 7 and Dottie's return if Marla was in the lineup for the first up to 6 games.

    Then Dotty tells the pitcher: “High fastballs. She can't hit 'em, can't lay off 'em.” But after a seeming destiny for failure after missing the first two pitches, Kit hits one inside the wall. She's rounding the bases for home with the ball having already reached Dotty's mitt! Then Kit rams Dotty and Dotty flies back, with Kitt on top...and then in my mind, the music starts with a groovy saxophone playing and the movie takes a really weird twist... ANYWAYS, Dotty is laid out on the ground with the baseball clinched in her hand and just when all the action comes to an end, the baseball slowly rolls out of Dotty's hand as Dotty relinquished her grip on it. Kitt is declared "safe" by the umpire, and thus, scores the winning run! Then there is a touching scene displaying the love the two sisters share and they end up going their separate ways for the time being. But I like to imagine that Kitt got mixed-up in the wrong crowd and started working the streets down by Skid Row and... And the film ends happily ever after!

    Unpopular opinion: Dottie didn't drop the ball on purpose. Think about it. She was really trying to win by telling the pitcher to throw high fastballs and she's not the type of person to just let her sister win, while letting her teammates down in the process. It makes no sense for her to intentionally drop the ball, and it makes perfect sense that Kitt just wanted it more which culminated in her taking the victory away from Dottie.

Dottie assumed that Ellen Sue would throw three straight high fastballs, Kit would swing at all three of them, miss all three of them, she'd strike out and the Peaches would be the champions. But Kit hit the third pitch, and hit it well.

Kit, here, is so much younger, so much different, so much trying to have her own gold to shine. Of course you angry-cry at this unfair system when you're always in the shadow. Older siblings have to learn to let them shine. To step back and let them do something new, and to help them grow by giving way, which is what happened here. Dottie was smart. She knew.

    I think ‘Dottie’ tried to repair the riff between them. The term ‘sibling rivalry’ wasn’t coined until 1941. So, she didn’t know how to fix the problem.

    • @devorahacts
      @devorahacts 2 года назад +2

      @Kevin Joe Fo But she tried to make her lose knowing she'd NEVER hit a high pitch before, literally not once and couldn't resist trying. She did it knowing her sister had been crying in the dugout. Then, the ONLY time Dottie ever panicked in the course of the game was seeing Kit running at her. That's not charity or love, that's losing a game from fear of someone who was more determined coming at you.

    • @sapphirelight748
      @sapphirelight748 2 года назад

      @Kevin Joe Fo and at the end, Kitt hugs Dottie with tears of gratitude in her eyes. Don't know how long it went unspoken between the sisters, but at that moment she's acknowledging (for the movie's sake I'm sure) that Dottie let go and she's grateful for it.

    • @devorahacts
      @devorahacts 2 года назад

      @Kevin Joe Fo I think rather than focusing on whether someone says the right words at the right time they're focusing on the notion that Kit kept working while Dottie took breaks because she didn't care about it as much. Also it was a good lesson to younger siblings that sometimes if your older sibling is too distracting to grow then taking your own space can help you to improve. That's exactly what happened. In the Montage while the two teams were working up to their series, it said the Kit pitched a shutout. That means she struck out each and every player on the other team. Only top-level players can do this not schmoes who don't care. She did the work while Dottie was going home hanging out with her husband. The reason that, she didn't leave the league much earlier was because she enjoyed the team camaraderie. She enjoyed hanging out with the girls having time that didn't have to do with the farm and working every day, and instead was running around playing ball which she was great at and everybody loved her for it. But Dottie was not the best sister. She helped her sister get on the train but she didn't really want her to grow that much. She let her have her Adventure because she cried so hard for it, but she didn't want it to take anything away from her. Even though she cared less about baseball she still wanted to win over her sister as she had always done. She was hurting her sister mentally and emotionally by doing that. That is not the best sister or the best person. Honestly I think you've lost objectivity on this because you think Dottie is prettier and hotter and therefore nicer. She learned as an adult that it was important to let the younger sibling have room to grow. That's what was happening in the early scene with older Dottie. She learned that to have a good relationship with her sister she needed to put her ego aside and not always force a win especially when just playing together. Her sister did want it more, and had the same family skill that she did oh, she just expressed it differently and was somewhere between five and 10 years behind her sister. In the original breakdown she's supposed to be somewhere around 6 to 8 years younger than Dottie. That's why she seems to act bratty is because Lori Petty is trying to behave as if her character is much younger and that's how she chose to do it is to show the constant frustration and to appear less intelligent.

    • @LucianDevine
      @LucianDevine 2 года назад

      @Kevin Joe Fo Do you think it would have added to or taken away from the scene if Dottie somehow got injured on that tumble into the dugout, and that injury is why she dropped the ball on the final play, maybe shaking her right arm a bit as she walks back to the plate and then again after telling Ellen Sue about the fastballs?

    Dottie didn’t drop it on purpose. She threw everything at Kit. She tried to win. She even told the pitcher Kit’s Kryptonite. It hurt Dottie to see her sister suffering but she knew she had to give it everything as to not cheapen it. Kit wanted it to come easy from the start of the movie and Dottie knew for her to truly succeed Kit had to earn in the game and in life. The whole movie she only had a bad game because Dottie sucked or she lost a race because Dotties legs are longer. The symbolism of Kit ignoring the stop sign is that she was finally taking it into her own hands. She quit crying and went right at it.

    In a real game, the runner on first could have tagged up while Dottie was lying on her back in the dugout, and could have been at least on second, if not at third. But the next scene shows her still on first.
