My late mother was a 12-year old girl (1944-45) that used to spend summers at her grandparents in Wisconsin. She went to many of these games. It's always bugged the hell out of me, that when I've seen it on TV.....that end title sequence has been sped up....or the footage showing the older ladies on the field playing has been completely edited out.
This ending reminds me of my mom so much. We watched this movie countless times, I was born 1989 her 1967. Seeing the characters get older, reminiscing, and adjusting to losing their loved ones, jus moving and keeping it going. It really hits different now as an adult . I’ll miss my mom forever :( rip
This scene, my god. Our grandmothers or maybe great grandmothers. Brings tears to my eyes every time. Respect them and realize they had a rich full life before kids or husbands came along, just like you.
They might also be our great-aunts or distant cousins. You never know. Food for thought. That means it will really get you thinking about it for a good while, ponder things.
Funny how dottie left after one year because her and Bob wanted to have kids. But yet she shows up alone and her sister ends up showing up with her kids and her kids, kids.
The League was more important to Kit than it was to Dottie, so IMO it's only natural that Kit's extended family would be there to celebrate such a major part of her life. I like to think that Dottie's extended family celebrated her own important milestones with her.
@@yooneeque1 I think it was meant to be that she didn't have kids you're right it meant more to kit because kit wanted to always beat her sister Something. In the end dotti didn't stay in the league so that her sister could thrive. Kit finally won Something which was what dottie always wanted a family. Kit ended up winning without trying.
@@SneakySnacks I definitely agree about the sibling rivalry between Kit and Dottie. Still, if you see the beginning of the film, you'll see that Dottie had at least one daughter and two grandsons. Her daughter was the one who encouraged her to go to the reunion. Also, IMO, Kit worked her butt off to make a name for herself in the AAGBL. Dottie may have had more natural talent, but Kit ultimately triumphed thanks to her hard work and determination.
Sure, while Dottie only played the first season and was a natural superstar. Kit most likely stayed in the league for several years (improving her game) and was a star after leading Racine to the first championship.
I loved the happy ending. While a few of the characters had passed away, the reunion of the two sisters in the end was beautiful. It’s a great way to not only close one chapter in their lives, but also to show that they both were still alive and well after all those years. I’m sure afterwards they would probably spend time telling their grandkids all their exciting baseball stories because now they were seen as celebrities to these youngsters. The old ladies who they used to see as “Grandma” who were from “the Old days” were now people who their kids could brag about to their friends. Their legacy would live on!
I was in HS when I first saw in a cable. I've been watching it all through this years and I never get fed up. It was always one of my favorite movies of all time no matter what anybody says.
One of the best movies ever made. It has a lot of meaning for me, from the 1990s, and the Madonna song at the end was beautiful. This movie never fails to get me teary-eyed.
Gets me every time I'm in tears. no one never knows when they're living the best times of their life . so just live everyday like is the best time of your life words from a very unwise man who knows love.
I first knew Mark Holton as Francis from the Pee Wee Herman movie, and other wild zany characters from different films. It was refreshing to see him play such a kind, and earnest character here as older stillwell.
The casting department did a great job with the older counterparts of the characters. The woman who plays older Dottie is SO SIMILAR to geena Davis and the voice! Also older Doris and older Mae have strong Rosie and Madonna vibes Even Stilwell 💕 it was sweet to pay tribute to his mother
Just another one of those films that I absolutely love and each time I watch it I always end up with a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes, especially when I see that the character played by Tom Hanks has died...Yes another of my favourite Tom Hanks movies.
GinaAlexandra sure enough Gina you got that right just now I was watching a clip from a league of their own at the end when Dottie &kitt see each other again and I started to cry.🙀😿😞 that was such a touching momement they shared 😇Rhonda Bienes
Jeffrey Jones and actually that’s the one thing about this movie that some former AAGPBL players apparently took issue with was the portrayal of Jimmy Dugan. The women who played for the real life Jimmie Foxx say that he was never anything but a gentleman with them. It is true that Foxx did struggle with alcohol issues after his playing days were over, but according to his players he never behaved in the rude and abrasive manner in which Dugan often does here. Obviously artistic license to give Tom Hanks a more memorable character, but some felt it was disrespectful to Foxx.
Always thought this film was an absolute masterpiece and it still is. This ending scene where they all reunite is emotional. For me though, This Movie and Field of Dreams are two of the most iconic and magnificent baseball movies I have ever seen and am glad that both have been selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being deemed "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant". Both reflect so much of American Culture.

My aunt was a very good semi pro in the era that followed this. I remember her talking about taking the train to Texas and bus trips. This movie gives very good perspective of that time.
Probably the most underappreciated part of this movie is the background music, especially during these ending scenes. This movie was literally perfect, yet it still amazes me to this day how many dudes consider it a "chick flick". Not ashamed at all to say this is one of my 3 most favorite movies ever!
Just saw this movie this week as I have not seen it in years! I always get choked up at the end as being a coach and dad of my daughters softball team really brings back fond memories as she does not play anymore.Great movie!
I think that will be debated until the end of time. ETA: I have a hard time believing that Dottie would deliberately drop the ball. That would have been pretty disrespectful to Jimmy and the girls with whom she had formed a tight bond and who had busted their tails all season. Baseball simply wasn't as important to Dottie as it was to Kit, and Kit fought for her big moment with all she had.
I disagree too....Kit legit beat her, it happens to even the best. She was happy for her sister though, but then again Jimmy gave her that look like he knew... but I think if he really thought it he would have been really mad.
"She always said it was the best time she ever had in her whole life." That's a great line that always makes me reflect back on my youth, i wish someone would have told me to appreciate things more at the time instead of taking them for granted, thinking they would last forever, who was it that said "youth is wasted on the young?"
I love this movie so much , I always have tears on my eyes especially the ending part , I love this soundtrack of this movie , this used to be my playground , this used to be my childhood place , this used to be my pride and joy ....it is truly a good movie , the cast are great , story are good , the background of the movie also showcase and introduce how woman tried to do something different then just stay home , they gave their life and they earn the respect , I remember this movie because i started to learn English , it was so many years ago but every time when i watch this movie i have so much emotion , and goose bump, I just so love this movie i think.
This ending chokes me up. From Stillwell to then happy joy choked up when they are all together and Dottie and Kit when Kit came in. Just a beautiful movie.
This was a really good movie. I remember watching it when I was a kid. You really go on a journey with the characters and this scene was the perfect way to end it. I don’t think I will watch the new Amazon series. I truly believe some classic movies need to be left alone and this is one of them.
I would like to see Geena Davis react to this aged version of herself now lol! They did such a great job with this scene... So many movies copied the "make them older in the reunion" format but this movie did it the best!
Must have been summer of 1992 or 1993 but my mom and I were house sitting way up in the mountains. I was a kid. There was a TV with no service, a VHS player, and 3 movies. A League of Their Own, Demolition Man, and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. I watched those 3 movies about 100 times each. Still love them to this day. There was also one CD and a CD Player. One of the best heartwarming movies ever. Great, great cast! Even Madonna was a memorable character here!
The part about Stillwell Angels mother always makes me sad but I'm glad he was there for her as she wasn't able to be
Dustyne Yeah he grew to be a good honorable man, that time made a difference being on the road with Mom, we all know he wasn't an Angel, he was a little 'Hellion, 'all the way May(Madonna)grabbed a bat, and, went after him, after he made the 'bus driver, quit.
@@Janvsone yea well little kids grow up. most do anyway. he knows she loved ball.
Those old gals playing at the end were amazing! They were really getting into it, like it was 1944 all over again!
robynsegg Some of those gals were the actual players! The one sitting in the stands who said, "That's Dottie Hinson. She only played one season" was Dolores Pickles Dries.
oh really?thank u. i was assuming a few were or at least 1
and i been watching A L O T O(a league of their own)off and on since 2001 or so. thank you chica, and was goin to research that part jen.
adios.
Competitive spirit never dies
@@robertborg852 You got that right!
I like the old lady that throws the bat down and gets in the ump's face. Hilarious.
I’ve always said this.. they did an incredible casting job! The young players who are now older all look the same decades later. Hard to believe all of them are different actresses
well none of them are that old yet though. 50 years hasnt passed. it was like 30 years
For the longest time I always thought it was the younger actresses in older make up
It's so comforting knowing that Dottie and Bob all those years together before he passed.
One of the best movies of all time. Captures life and how special and quick it is… rings true to us all.
I have watched this movie a billion times and yet I still sob my heart out over the last ten minutes. Brilliant film.
one of the best sports movies ive ever seen based off of a true story

It's always bugged the hell out of me, that when I've seen it on TV.....that end title sequence has been sped up....or the footage showing the older ladies on the field playing has been completely edited out.
This ending reminds me of my mom so much. We watched this movie countless times, I was born 1989 her 1967. Seeing the characters get older, reminiscing, and adjusting to losing their loved ones, jus moving and keeping it going. It really hits different now as an adult . I’ll miss my mom forever :( rip
Im a 31 year old married man when stue looks up at his mom when they are in the hall of fame how do you not get terry eyed.
Feeling the same..
What's a stue? You mean Stewie? LOL
"Terry"
54 and still brings tears to my eyes because of how important it was what these ladies did.😢
It's nice that they're still close after all that time not to mention they finally got the recognition that they deserve good for them.
This brings tears to my eyes. This film and Practice Magic reminds me how sisterhood is honorable, and honor brings sisterhood.
They did for each other. Sisterhood is Goddam right.
Hallelujah lords
I would have thought that Dottie would have kept on playing for the league since she love baseball so much
I love when Dottie and Kit see each other! It is such a good moment!👩❤️👩
You cut out the best part. The closing credits when you got to watch the real veterans of the league playing on the field.❤❤
No one wants to see the real players and their wives
@@weneedreagan are you saying those women that played ball married women? Dumb...
, we do. YOU might not, so feel free NOT to watch.
My late mom broke her knee doing a double play for the Jersey Tomatoes softball team.
Victor Haywood yaay jersey we dont suck 😂
What a badass!!💪
That scene always brings tears to my eyes. It’s filled with so much emotion
I was in HS when I first saw in a cable. I've been watching it all through this years and I never get fed up. It was always one of my favorite movies of all time no matter what anybody says.
Best part of a great movie...brings a tear to my eye every time I see it. Music score under the dialogue and scenes is PERFECT.
Stilwell Angel's "You're gonna lose" set us up for the Dottie's grand reunion with Kit.;)
A part of me had hoped that Tom Hank's character was still alive for the ending. Just to hear him give a theres no crying in baseball or something
I love how happy Kit and Dottie are to see each other.
The casting department did a great job with the older counterparts of the characters. The woman who plays older Dottie is SO SIMILAR to geena Davis and the voice! Also older Doris and older Mae have strong Rosie and Madonna vibes
Even Stilwell 💕 it was sweet to pay tribute to his mother
They used Geena Davis’s actual voice for the older Dottie, the actress playing older Dottie was lip syncing her lines
Just another one of those films that I absolutely love and each time I watch it I always end up with a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes, especially when I see that the character played by Tom Hanks has died...Yes another of my favourite Tom Hanks movies.
I love the part when Dottie and Kit see each other! It's such a nice moment!
the only part I didn't like was they were the same height as senior citizens, when Geena is taller than Lori.
i was hoping for a "you bitch!" moment, but yes it was nice
GinaAlexandra sure enough Gina you got that right just now I was watching a clip from a league of their own at the end when Dottie &kitt see each other again and I started to cry.🙀😿😞 that was such a touching momement they shared 😇Rhonda Bienes
I teared up
Older Kit had such a great smile! I wanted to hug her too!
*One of the best movies ever made!!* ❤😍😭
I freaking cry every single time I watch it!!
When they showed jimmy dugan i literally started bawling.
Ari Grande me2
Jimmy Dugan was really Jimmy Foxconn, a truly great hall of Fame slugger.
Jimmy Foxx
Jeffrey Jones and actually that’s the one thing about this movie that some former AAGPBL players apparently took issue with was the portrayal of Jimmy Dugan. The women who played for the real life Jimmie Foxx say that he was never anything but a gentleman with them. It is true that Foxx did struggle with alcohol issues after his playing days were over, but according to his players he never behaved in the rude and abrasive manner in which Dugan often does here. Obviously artistic license to give Tom Hanks a more memorable character, but some felt it was disrespectful to Foxx.
ADEAL918 I can see why especially when he was probably like a family member or father figure to some of the girls
Both reflect so much of American Culture.
l'm a Bull Durham girl myself :)
@@Mftjan2000 I still inexplicably haven't seen that yet. I need to go fix that since I've heard it's one of the greatest sports movies ever made. Also another favourite in that genre is Hoosiers (1986) although it is about basketball but nevertheless a masterpiece. Cheers for mentioning Bull Durham, you've got me primed to go and watch it :)
@@vinaymulukutla358 Oh try to find it. Intelligent, romantic, funny as heck....Great if you love baseball! Susan, Tim, and Kevin are top of their game!
Both of the movies you mention are indeed iconic, but I believe “The Natural” belongs up there as well. Just an AMAZING movie!
@@sundeeproctor8711 Thanks for telling me of The Natural. I will check that out. There are a lot of epic sports films that slipped by me over the years that I should have watched and would have enjoyed.
Sad Fact: Lynn Cartwright, who portrayed older Dottie, passed away Jan 2nd in 2004. RIP Lynn, forever our Dottie...
To anyone in their early 20s who watched this movie for the very first time in their lives, I will always have love, admiration, and respect for thos film...I saw it back in 2015-16 and am still in love with it ❤
This 2 hour movie seems like it's only about 45 minutes long because I get so into it that before I know it, it's over. One of my all-time favorite movies!!!
It’s such a shame we’ve all got to get old. That’s why I always say, make good memories today because they may be all you have tomorrow!
That's very good advice right there.
"There's no crying in baseball" lol
Also,"Don't catch the clap."
266 comments today 8/23/2020 show that I am not alone nor crazy for enjoying, no, I mean, LOVING this movie the way I do. This ending scenes always get me, can't contain a couple of tears, that Madonna song during the credits, after 28 years I feel these people are friends or family to me.
Blessings from San Juan PR !!!
I love the way they still called him Stillwell Angel. It was like he had a whole team of moms still looking out for him.
Lynn Cartwright played "Older Dottie" HOWEVER that's Geena Davis' voice!
I, thought the woman was Geena Davis. Cause in the face looks like her. Cause when young actors play old actors. They use a lot of make-up
Jacqueline Wade I thought it was Geena Davis at first but it's lynn Cartwright. However it's still Geena's voice you hear.
They did the same with the original Superman. Jeff East played the teenage Clark Kent but it was Christopher Reeves voice
True, i seeing something she died like 3 years ago. She was like 101 years old
+Jacqueline Wade i thought it was geena davis too until i looked at the credits
Jacqueline Wade Lynn Cartwright died in 2004, she was 76. A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN was her final appearance.
My aunt was a very good semi pro in the era that followed this. I remember her talking about taking the train to Texas and bus trips. This movie gives very good perspective of that time.
This movie was/is so awesome. I love it and I cry during these scenes even when I try to hold it in. A masterpiece. 💕
Why does this scene always bring tears to my eyes
I believe because it's intended to.
For years, I thought that older Dottie was Geena Davis in a really quality make-up job.
ASimoneau isn't it?
sliat1981
Nope - different actress.
ASimoneau its really her
+sliat1981 Maybe the voice is dubbed-she sounds almost exactly the same. Or they got an older actress who sounds exactly like Geena Davis.
Older Dottie was played by Lynn Cartwright - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lynn_Cartwright
The ending always makes me teary Eyed. No matter how many times I've seen it.
It has that effect on anyone.
NGL
I always thought that Dottie Dropped that ball on purpose, so Kit could have her moment.
I think 90% of people who have seen this movie, myself included, agree with you. There was no way she couldn't hold on to that ball.
Vic Damone she did
Stephanie Gittinger I disagree. A competitor is not going to throw a game like that. I think what Dotti said was correct, Kit simply wanted it more.
"She always said it was the best time she ever had in her whole life."
That's a great line that always makes me reflect back on my youth, i wish someone would have told me to appreciate things more at the time instead of taking them for granted, thinking they would last forever, who was it that said "youth is wasted on the young?"
A wonderful ending to to an equally wonderful film. This is one of my all time favorites ever......
Every time I passed this field during work hours these women come to my mind. I love history and just seeing the field gives me chills
The famous Doubleday Field in Cooperstown NY I took would pass this field as a tourist and saw little bit of games that played there as well
This was a really good movie. I remember watching it when I was a kid. You really go on a journey with the characters and this scene was the perfect way to end it. I don’t think I will watch the new Amazon series. I truly believe some classic movies need to be left alone and this is one of them.
That was a emotional ending and a happy ending at the same time Dottie sees her siste once again
I would like to see Geena Davis react to this aged version of herself now lol! They did such a great job with this scene... So many movies copied the "make them older in the reunion" format but this movie did it the best!
A league if their own is probably penny Marshall’s best movie. The story telling , the dialogue and the chemistry is incredible.
Emotionally overwhelming. Every time.
yeah man... The sense of mortality.
I'm wiping my eyes as I write this . This weekend I met Wilma Briggs who played in this league in real life and appears somewhere in this clip
Patrick Krott the part with stilwell gets me
From 06:08 that connection and both facial expressions of both is really something. Very emotional.
Grown man.. and this sequence and song gets me EVERY time!
It was Reba McEntire's Greatest Hits Vol II, to this day I'm a huge Reba fan.
One of my favorite movies of all time..my mom died in 1999 and she taught me sports..she loved baseball ⚾️ and one of my earliest memories was listening to a night baseball game with my mom over the old radios 📻..by the way this movie besides being about baseball was about life and the friendships we make along this journey of life
Dottie: May? All the way May? May: Nobody has called me that since. Doris: Since last night!
This is one of two so called chick flicks that I love and watch over and over and cry at every viewing...the other being Fried Green Tomatoes!
You need to add "Dolores Claiborne" to that list too.
One of the best movies ever. The bar scene was the best part of the movie. And one of my favorite Tom Hanks roles.
The real actresses who played those girls will be that age pretty soon.
Lori Petti looks older than the actress playing older Kit.
Time truly is a slow poison.
@@tankgirl9324 oh well I was 17 when this movie came out now I'm 47 but I embrace it.
