I'm so happy you're getting into Fantasy Amber! I remember reading The Hobbit in elementary school, and that was my gateway into becoming a lifelong fan on the genre. Bilbo is just the loveliest little man!
I hope at some point in your fantasy journey you give the First Law trilogy a try. I heard Merphy say it was one of her all-time favorites and so I picked it up recently. It is so AMAZING but I have nobody to talk about it with other than my dad! The characters in these books are like nothing I've ever read. They are so well-realized that they straight up feel like real people, down to every passing inner thought.

Great review! We read the Hobbit in 7th grade language arts class and its been a favorite ever since. Bilbo is the best! Be prepared though, the Hobbit is YA, but Lord of the Rings is for sure not. The prose is beautiful and the characters are just as well-written, but there is so much more depth to the lore and time spent on those in-between moments, and thorough descriptions of battles, so just know that its going to take time. Oh, and more singing too 😂

Commented below on Dolphinsrock post my thoughts about the animated movie, but it was my life as a kid. Funny thing was I didn't realize that it was a part of Tolkien's wider universe, so when I watched the LoTR movies many years later when they came out (dating myself here), I remember watching those and thinking some things felt familiar, like I'd heard some of it before. And then researched and found out this epic story was connected to the one I had loved so much as a child. And of course I have since gone back and read the book, and loved it.
Regarding the LotR books themselves, it's crazy, because Tolkien does a lot of stuff I don't particularly generally like in my fantasy books (won't get into specifics here just for spoiler reasons), but I like them when *he* does them. And I think it's mostly just because his love for the world he created just shines through. Even with things that might not work/might be boring (because he does love to talk about his world) with other authors, you learn to accept and later enjoy because he loves his world so much and you can't help but get caught up in. At least I couldn't, and hope you have the same experience.

The Hobbit was my first true love as a reader. I've read this book more times than any other fictional book. Every time I read it I find something new and interesting that I didn't notice before. And I agree that it's pretty dang close to perfect. Not perfect but very close.
My favorite moment is when Bilbo rescues the dwarves from the Spiders because to me that is the moment when he stops being Bilbo the homebody and becomes Bilbo the hero. Such a good book. And now I want to read it again.

Speaking from recent experience, The Hobbit is THE book for a homebody-introvert to take on a road trip!

The hobbit is my most re-read and favorite book. The Lord of the Rings is a VERY different story. If you struggle with the get to the point of the story you may not like it.

I'm assuming you're referring to the 1977 movie. I also came down here just to mention it. I forced my library to get a new vhs copy of it because I wore out their original one just checking it out over and over and over again. That movie was my jam as a kid. And the animation was amazing. Maybe the characters look a little different than I would think, but everything else was just great.
@Amber - Don't watch the travesty of the live action movies. Do watch the animated one.
