  • The cast talk about 'The Office' and their favourite scenes. Had to cut out one scene due copyrights, my apologies. Enjoy!
    Edit: What was said during the kiss scene that I had to cut:
    Lucy Davis (Dawn): ‘’Mum and dad had been out at a friend’s house and they’d asked for it to be put on. The moment where Dawn had come back into the party to get her man, this roar had gone up of joy.’’
    Stephen Merchant: ‘’We sort of worked hard all the way through to make sure the love story was quite classic, traditional.’’

    like many americans, i watched the US version first and it is a great show but the UK version is incredible. David Brent is one of the funniest characters of all time, everyone knows someone like him and that personality type has never been represented so perfectly.

    • @gibberconfirm166
      @gibberconfirm166 7 лет назад +24

      I just finally watched the early seasons of the US version, Michael Scott seems much less 'real,' except maybe his actual sales prowess winning him the job (but even on that note, the writers for the US Office don't seem to know much about the personalities of actual salesmen, except as shticky cartoons.)
      When Brent brings his guitar out in S1E4, or compares his dynamic with friends to famous comedian teams, you're uncomfortably-learning something about who Brent is (or aspired to be as a young man.) I don't care if the US version has 200 episodes, Carell feels more like American shtick, Brent feels like a real 'chilled-out entertainer' of a frustrated personality type.

      +pied a' terre. The United States version is not simply “great” - it’s monumental. Why people try and be such naysayers (and Romanticists of) towards the show after, more-than-likely, figuring out the British version of the show existed NOT in retrospect, is so puzzling. It’s such a weird instance of human behavior.

      Partridge's last series was a good as ever and 'Mum' is one of the sweetest comedies ever and that's just in the last year. To say we'll never see anything like this post "the early 00's" is daft as fuck. The Inbetweeners will piss down your fingers and shit down your arm.

    When I saw one of the show's first episodes, I was shocked. It was airing on a local PBS station, which tends to do documentaries and such, and so I thought it was real! I sat there literally CRINGING at Ricky Gervaise's character. But then I thought he looked vaguely familiar and that maybe this was some kind of a put-on. About a week later I read that it was a comedy done like a documentary and that a lot of people (such as myself) had been fooled by it. Such a great show. For some reason, although the American version IS good, the Brit version just seems so much better to me, and I think that's principally because of Ricky and his acting. You can actually see fear and insecurity in his eyes. Fabulous show, as was "Extras".

    Brent : Who else has seen this filth? [everyone puts their hand up, including Joan the cleaning lady]
    Brent : You haven't even got email Joan.
    Joan : Someone printed it out for me.

    That music reminds me of the passing of life the trials and tribulations the mundane the little glimmers of hope. The rainy days the cold streets the empty dreams washed away with the tide of time. Thanks Ricky. David was your best!

    @10:58 this is why the Brent movie did not work.
    People weren't emotionally invested in David Brent. They never really cared about him. He wasn't an underdog. At the very most people pitied him. He isn't a hero.
    On the other hand Tim is a likable and relateable guy and the struggle of romance in The Office with all the clowns and distractions there there were was the real magic of the show.
    The love story came from Steve Merchant. You can tell in Gervais' reaction here while he's talking about it. It looks put on, but I feel it's genuine.
    What was missing from David Brent: On The Road? Steven Merchant's writing chops.

      UberKuma84 Brent was a good character. The storyline for the movie was just lame. In the Office it was all the characters together that made it so brilliant.

    • @paulorocky
      @paulorocky 5 лет назад +2

      What was also missing - the other characters. How did Tim and Dawn go? Did big Keith work on his communication skills? Is Gareth still in the TA?

    Ten years later Gervais makes David Brent: Life on the Road, without Merchant, who presumably still felt the same.

      Perhaps he meant the story of the Office, which primarily focuses on Tim and Dawn, whose story had it's conclusion, while Brent's was far more open-ended and as such had plenty of potential for more entertainment.

    Like Steve Coogan's Partridge, Brent is Gervais' best creation, he'll never equal it. That's why he's ressurected him.

    • @georgewicks1380
      @georgewicks1380 7 лет назад +1

      strumbolli I would agree but I feel Coogan has equalled or even excelled on his earlier AP stuff. Gervais hasn't imo made Brent better since The Office. Do you agree?

    • @strumbolli
      @strumbolli 7 лет назад +1

      Yes I agree and ressurecting him smacks of desperation.

    • @whatryewatchin

      The amazing thing about Gervais, which I'm going to point out everywhere(!), is that he created a character Andy Millman in Extras, who ends up selling-out his 'creative' comedy for cheap laughs appealing to the wider audience.
      Ironically and unbelieveably Gervais has done Exactly the same thing with his crap unoriginal cameos and shite slapstick films and shows since.
      Chubby little loser indeed! (Sing it Bowie!)

      There is music in the background yes, but only for a very short time. Had to cut more than 1 minute and the music was only 10 seconds or so. I don't get it either why that specific scene has copyright issues.
