Brents reaction to ‘still in the garage’ is an absolute masterclass. A glimpse of annoyed, remembering himself, then embarrassed, then covering up the embarrassment by pretending to be nonchalant. I’ll never tire of Brent
I have not since a better comedic performance before or since. He is so locked in with the character that it almost feels real. Tiptoeing the line between "totally absurd" and "actual person." Pure genius. Carell did a great job early in the US version (his performance throughout "Casino Night" is sublime), but they went so deep into farce that it just became something completely different.

Gareth was the right choice for the job. Disciplined, structured, detail-oriented. Yeah he's a bit of a plank at times and drops some absolute clangers, but he's the easy choice over Tim for a 'real' office.
@Metallex He and Jenny originally offered the role to Tim, but Tim cut his nose to spite his face and rejected the offer, stating that he intended to leave. Of course, he never actually left though.
He was formerly assistant to the regional manager, so Neil is most likely playing it safe while he gets the lay of the land and leveraging what exists of the existing hierarchy.

The big joke with Brent was he didn’t really understand the deeper meaning of the egalitarian concepts that he espoused and merely repeated them to gain social kudos and approval. Is there a chance that he’s mocking the same people for doing the same thing? Brent today would be loudly proclaiming all the causes which Ricky currently mocks. I don’t think you’ve really understood the original joke and think the joke was mocking middle aged middle managers.
@@RaferJeffersonIII The world was very different then. He was spoofing the insincerity of douchecanoes at the time (which seems to be more Merchant's contribution than his own). His character postured caring about things in front of the camera, but his actual crew was guys like Finchy and Gareth. If The Office was made today to parallel culture, David Brent would talk about the importance of stoicism and act like he'd read Marcus Aurelius or was into Jordan Peterson. Because that would be "cool" now. I don't think the joke was mocking middle-aged middle managers. I think the show understood the toxicity of guys like Chris Finch and enablers like Brent.
