"He went home to get it". Such a simple line but brilliant. You know Brent's character, and you play out your own scenario in your head of what led to him feeling the need to go home and get his guitar.
The Office is a seminal piece of art about the human condition. The fact they know the camera is there works because for the staff the mundanity of office life means they mostly just forget it’s there & act as they normally would which contrasts beautifully with Brent’s narcissistic obsession with it & allows for amazing subtlety as Martin Freeman communicates so much to the audience with simple glances acting as our everyman mirror who can see the absurdity that underpins ‘normal’ ‘boring’ office culture, people & life in general. The US office is just a sitcom set in an office.
Yes, the type of people who watch and enjoy or would write the comedy for the US version are the same type of people who would watch or write the so called comedy on late night shows like Steven Colbert, John Stewart, Jimmy Kimmel, James Cordan and John Oliver. Thinking its so original and ground breaking. In their mind the Micheal Scot character is some buffoon how they see Trump, there to be laughed at and ridiculed by the rest of the cast and the audience watching from home. With the British Office it is deeper and more nuanced and subtle, with one of the differences being that the audience is privately rooting for and entertained by Brent and subconsciously agree or at least understand some of his actions and know deep down hes not all that bad. Its people like Brent that make life enjoyable and transport us away from the mundane, while ironically the bores who mock Brent behind his back because they are up themselves would love all those late night TV shows and find them hilarious but dont appreciate Brents humor.
Dawn's expression when Brent and Gareth are trying to be funny is priceless I've seen that expression so many times on girls in pubs when their guys are showing how funny it they are 😅
I thought I’d give the US office a go , having been a big fan of the UK - how anyone can suggest for a moment that the US is better than the British is beyond me, the US one is contrived , forced and generally deeply unfunny - whereas the UK is nuanced , layered , and quite easily one of the most cleverly written British shows ever made .
I hate it when the US calls our version “The UK The Office” No. It’s The Office USAs is USAs version of The Office. Yanks version is awful yet they have the nerve to criticise ours!!
You can’t compare the 2. The only thing in common is the name. I liked the Uk one but I understand that the quality of the writing and characterisation of the us version.
The customer care training day deserved the Brent treatment! Awful cliched boring nonsense that doesn’t benefit anyone. Well done Brent for making a mockery of it and Rowan probably grateful in long run for being pushed into a new career path
The US version is crap. They seem to have a reason to make things go on for too too long. The Office is 2 seasons and 2 Xmas specials and unforgettable. The us office goes on and on and on and on and on and on. Ricky knew how to end the show.
The Office is a work of genius on many levels. Comedy, satire, politics, business, the human condition - envy, status, greed, despair, hubris, pathos, ambition, failure, success etc. The viewer is taken on a journey that obliges laugh out loud and deep cringe at the same moment. Truly Shakespearean in depth and breadth. But I feel Gervais, the writer / observer is still not recognised as the truly great actor he is. For me his bodily gestures - face, hands, standing position relative to others and overall demeanour at all times in character in front of the single camera, reflect the massive preparation he must have put into the role of David Brent. One day someone will do a PhD thesis on the Hand Gestures of David Brent. The Brent character so dominates yet supports, enhances, adds to and sits alongside the other characters (Lucy, Martin, Mackenzie et al) on the stage of the office. The US version was scripted comedic artifice whereas the UK Office was Observation put into art form. A post modern comedy of manners.
