Keep up the "random thoughts" at the end! You inspired me to get back into pottery after 20 years, and my 6 yo son LOVES your videos. We got a wheel, built a studio at our house and are saving up for the kiln!
I was wondering how hard is it to get a handle on it with the crackle? Your videos are very inspiring and love watching them!! I am 59 years old and started pottery about 3 years ago. It is so much fun and I always think of ways to do things and what I could make. Sometimes it’s hard to fall asleep because of an idea in my head that I can’t wait to try! Thank you so much for all your ideas and videos and best wishes to your beautiful family.
Love the fact that you talk in your videos. Keep up the ramble! You inspired me to build my own studio and I would love to have you visit. Hopefully I will be in my studio by the end of the year. We are working hard right now to get it buttoned up for winter. Utah would be a great place for your family to visit. Lots to see and do and very kid friendly. I agree with AnnMarie. A fun kickstarter or sponsored video of Potters Across America would be awesome!
I started a blog and an Instagram account to talk about plants. That's what gets me excited! Especially growing food, but I enjoy a lot of other plant things too. Right now I'm getting a lot more houseplants and learning about them. Yes, I love the random thoughts at the end! It's inspiring to watch someone who loves what they do!
Ok so the last 30 seconds really got me. Found your channel the other week, have experimented with pottery and enjoyed it, but the main thing is just became a chartered accountant after 4-5 years auditing - and the idea of quitting to move to the countryside and do something that actually gets you excited & passionate is big on my mind right now. So anyway, old video, may not see the comment, but thanks - your mission of inspiring people to follow their passions is truly appreciated. Also appreciate the transparency of videos on a financial level and reality level so people like me with only a little bit of experience don't go investing thousands into something like this before having ever made a mug. Cheers!
You mentioned something in a previous video about not being afraid to fail, & that has always been my hang up. Always felt like I had to do something perfectly right away. Luckily in my later years, I have found hobbies that are very forgiving so that I can create without the fear factor 😉. Weaving, spinning yarn, crocheting & flow painting. Not sure that I will ever take a pottery class in this earthly life, but I absolutely love watching the process & really appreciate the artistry. Thank you, Jon, for sharing your joy of pottery & life in general! I smile the whole way through every video - clear to the very end!
I took a pottery class at the local college over the summer with my twin college aged daughters and now I am hooked. I am in my second semester class and just signed up for spring. I really love these videos they are so informative and uplifting. Thank you!
I started embroidery and weaving! Ive always wanted to and I'm so happy I'm finally trying it out. We all love your passion so much, its really infectious. Much love
12:45 nailed it! That theory is what I live by. As I'm sure you know, it becomes contagious and people begin to gravitate towards you. Love your work, great idea for the trip, we should talk!
This is by far my favorite channel on RUclips right now! Makes me want to get back into throwing pots! Thanks so much, Jon!!! Yes, I love the crackle stuff. Seeing new techniques is why I spend time on RUclips watching vids. Yes, keep gabbing at the end of your vids...you inspire and your positive energy is infectious. The road trip sounds cool too! Come to Eugene, Oregon!! We have a ton of potters here...and good surfing near by!
I’ve gotten the crackle without the liquid glass stuff (I couldn’t get any that was allowed in class) I used a torch to make the outside clay hard and then made my shape 🙌🏻
I really like this technique. I’ve been doing it for a couple of years now and have mixed underglaze or iron oxide with the sodium silicate before applying it.
Passion drives you! I love you videos! They always make me antsy to get in the studio and create!!! I love the idea of you going around to different studios! I'd love to see what other potters are up to! :D
Jon, I love that you spill at the end. I am new to pottery but use a great studio just down the street. I am obsessed almost all I think about and watch on RUclips is pottery. Come to Utah on your way to California next spring. Beauty here. Pottery is a spiritual path for me.
The marbled clay turned out awesome!! I’ve worked with sodium silicate before, I made a cylinder and carved mountians on it then stretched out the clay and made a bottle. It turned out pretty cool!
I watched...to the end:) that's exactly why I look forward to your videos-I always learn a little something but at the same time, you are always positive and uplifting!
My wife and I have finally completed closing our carport in to make it two rooms one for her art and one for my pottery. I admire the way that you complete your pots with very little clay, I like eficiency
I think those tinted clay cups with the silicate are some of the neatest pieces you've ever made!!! Love the look of them! Love watching your videos and the inspiration you share. Pottery is such a solitary thing sometimes. It's fun to see what other potters are doing. Thanks!
I love this effect. Sodium silicate is one of my favorite techniques. I love it paired with a Curly Mudtool cut-off. I also just glaze the rim and inside (and the skip the crackle and do the base if I wanna get fancy).
Great video as always. You and the family are welcome anytime at Ryker Studios in Indiana. Yes the web site is mostly slip casted items. But we have a kick wheel and a electric wheel. We throw and are planning some exciting things next year including a RUclips channel, raku firing, and maybe construction and firing a pit firing. Thanks for inspiring and encouragement you give us all.
Hi Jon, I watch to the very end on all your vids. Come on down to San Antonio, I've got my little studio that I love to work in, in my own back yard. The plus side is San Antonio is a great place to visit with so many family oriented things to do. Love this technique! Keep doing what you' re doing!!!
You should see about coming to our school and teaching us a technique!!!!! My teacher recommended the class watch your wheel throwing video, so I assume she's a fan! Definitely is an amazing teacher!!!!
I say yeah man to the crackle!!! So cool. Awesome textures going on. I also yeah man to the road trip. We have a guest suite in our house that you’re welcome to if you make it Memphis way. I have baby nephews so lots of toys for Ryder and pack n play supplies etc for the new little one. 😍
To make the crackle pop even more, try brushing on a contrasting slip, and put the sodium silicate on that. The cracks then show the main clay body. This could be especially interesting with the marbled clay.
I also enjoy the random stuff at the ends - hearing someone else's wild ideas is probably the most helpful thing for not thinking I'm crazy for mine! It'd be awesome if you came to our studios at Hocking College!!! My students love you and kept talking about you until I had to see what was up. We have a 10 wheel studio and are about to start transforming another room into a glaze/spray room. Coooould be fun 😄
Yes!!! I am just about to retire from my Interiors company and go full time potter !!!!!! You are so right, I am following my dream. If you come over to the UK please visit my pottery studio. I love the marbling technique as you saw on Aitchpots my instagram page, inspired by your last video. Not fully sure i like the crackle but a great video showing what is possible. Love the thoughts at the end, keep 'em coming!
Wonderful video! Would you please make a video of some of the various ways you mentioned regarding glazing? I have worked with sodium silicate and I love it, but my glazing doesn't give it the justice it deserves. Thanks.
Jon, have you ever been to Seagrove NC to visit the large potter community there? I’ve visited several times and there are lots of multi-generation potters. It would make an excellent place to visit for your road trip.
Big fan of the JTP musings! Keep talking, a whole bunch of us do like to listen the whole way through! ☺️👍 Still waiting for Thursday Thoughts with JTP.
Come to Tampa, fla! We have an awesome studio and our Thursday morning class has an amazing range of different talented potters! It’s through the city of tampa parks & rec dept at the Brian glazer family community center. We’d love to have you!
Another potter you should visit is Simon Leach, remember your grandfather met his grandfather years ago, you did a great video about him. Simon is in America now. Cheers Bob 🇬🇧
Jon, you're welcome to take a practice tour of my studio where I do woodworking, blacksmithing, bbq, homebrewing, and oil painting as well as pottery. The kicker is that I'm only an hour away, on the other side of St Paul. I might have an attention span issue where I can't pick just one hobby. Pottery is the latest addition.
Great vids Jon. You might consider Shearwater Pottery in Ocean Springs, MS as a place to visit, Great story to the place with family pottery works for almost a hundred years now.
Hi Jon, I am passionate about being inspired by passionate artists! That’s why I watch your video’s. I really love the crackle technique you have demonstrated here. I was thinking how a glazing that would enhance the dimension in the cracks so that they give the feeling of being somewhere green mountainous with crevasses and possibly some blue water vibe would be fantastic! It could be Hawaii or the North Shore of Superior! The glaze you used on that large bowl that was at the top of your kiln opening I believe would achieve this. Just thinking! Sally in the Valley
Yo JTP, I'd love to see a video on your technique for making a large bowl, such as a large salad bowl. I think some potters use a blow lamp to firm up the clay midway, cos its so plastic it tends to collapse otherwise. Love to see your ideas on that mate.
You inspire loads of people Jon, it would be interesting to see you go to other pottery studios in America and do your “ Thing “. You should go and see Matthew (can’t think of his surname) he has built a huge wood fired kiln, I think I saw a comment from you. Cheers Bob 🇬🇧
If I have to single handedly carry the weight of your video retention rates, then dang it that's what I'll do. The bit at the end was a pleasant surprise!
I would love to see a low fire vs high fire clay video. Is midfire clay just a happy medium of temperature or are most earthenware just not really used much outside of classrooms?
I combined this technique and the spiral mug tutorial to create a spiral pattern of cracks. Was a pain to apply the silicate but turned out pretty nifty
Going out to a friends house Monday. They have a big kiln still sitting in the crate for the past 5 years. What do you think?? Should I get it and have what ever is wrong with it fixed?? And it is in an old falling apart shed. Never used. And covered in plastic.
I participate in a group studio in Yucaipa CA. I’m sure we all would love a visit! I was wondering where to purchase sodium silicate. Also would love to see you attach handles on the crackle. I definitely want to try this! And you just ramble on anything y’all want! I love watching the add ons with your videos! Passion chasers face their fears! That’s why some don’t follow their passion. Excuses like time and money often are used to avoid moving forward. But everyone goes at their own pace. Having people believe in you helps a lot too💕🥰🤗
You’re ADORABLE!!! Love your passion and I hope one day you will decide to visit my beautiful country CHILE 🇨🇱! To bad we have the pandemia right now though.....🙄🤦♀️😷😷😷 so stay safe, stay home🤷♀️
I would love to learn about pottery, I've been wanting to start a new hobby and love watching your videos. I live by waconia do you ever offer classes at all?
Keep up the "random thoughts" at the end! You inspired me to get back into pottery after 20 years, and my 6 yo son LOVES your videos. We got a wheel, built a studio at our house and are saving up for the kiln!
that's awesome

I’d love to see these pots glazed with the variety of techniques you mentioned.
I started embroidery and weaving! Ive always wanted to and I'm so happy I'm finally trying it out. We all love your passion so much, its really infectious. Much love

I'm a fan of the post-credit epilogue! Super fun to hear the cogs turning
I watched...to the end:) that's exactly why I look forward to your videos-I always learn a little something but at the same time, you are always positive and uplifting!
That speech at the end had me inspired! 👏
I love that you talk at the end!!! I learn so much and it gets me excited about my pottery too!!

Love watching the main vid, but also love the “offcuts” at the end! Fun and interesting content dude!
I love this effect. Sodium silicate is one of my favorite techniques. I love it paired with a Curly Mudtool cut-off. I also just glaze the rim and inside (and the skip the crackle and do the base if I wanna get fancy).

You are such a good teacher and fun with it. Thank you so much
Hi Jon, I watch to the very end on all your vids. Come on down to San Antonio, I've got my little studio that I love to work in, in my own back yard. The plus side is San Antonio is a great place to visit with so many family oriented things to do. Love this technique! Keep doing what you' re doing!!!
I've never tryed it but it's definitely fascinating ! It would be so kool on a hugeeee pot !
Hope to see you at NCECA 2020. So excited it's here in VA and only a couple hours from me!
Yes!!!! You must come to NCECA! You will find all of your people!
Great look, I love the one with the red glaze that snuck into the cracks. :)
You should see about coming to our school and teaching us a technique!!!!! My teacher recommended the class watch your wheel throwing video, so I assume she's a fan! Definitely is an amazing teacher!!!!
I love the marble clay, man. Cant wait to see in which direction your road trip idea takes you.
Jon that turned out perfectly! Beautiful pieces!
This is the future, you might want to take a rain check on that road trip. Maybe next year, still cool videos 👍
Love it and looking forward to doing it. I strongly agree with the statement at the end of the video about doing what you're passionate about
I say yeah man to the crackle!!! So cool. Awesome textures going on. I also yeah man to the road trip. We have a guest suite in our house that you’re welcome to if you make it Memphis way. I have baby nephews so lots of toys for Ryder and pack n play supplies etc for the new little one. 😍

Yes! Come to Chattanooga!
Thanks for the video. I agree we should all do more things we are passionate about.

That is such a cool technique. I’m a mixed media artist and so appreciate those cracks and texture 🙌🏻😍
YES! Road trip to the UK 🇬🇧
Excellent questions at the end!❤️ Thank you! 💛
Yes!!! I am just about to retire from my Interiors company and go full time potter !!!!!! You are so right, I am following my dream. If you come over to the UK please visit my pottery studio. Hello there! Could you please make a video of how you make the different planter potts that you do?
I haven't tried this, yet. Thank you for showing the process.
I would love an ocarina with this effect
Come to Canada! Me and my workshop are in Ontario just above Michigan (UP) and I have a cottage your family can stay in too :) on a very big lake !
I would love to watch you glaze these!!!
I did this for my college work last year. Obviously, yours are way cleaner 😂 Love this
I have added different metal oxides to the sodium silicate solution for an additional color accent on the surface.
Come to Tampa, fla! We have an awesome studio and our Thursday morning class has an amazing range of different talented potters! It’s through the city of tampa parks & rec dept at the Brian glazer family community center. We’d love to have you!
Such an awesome question!
Another potter you should visit is Simon Leach, remember your grandfather met his grandfather years ago, you did a great video about him. Simon is in America now. Cheers Bob 🇬🇧
melhor canal gosto de mais dos seus videos Brasil
I have an awesome studio in Georgia, would LOVE to have you come here. Other great potters close by as well. Def think you should road trip!
I would love it if you visited me at the studio. It's in Flagler Beach Florida. The studio is right on the beach.
Thank you for THIS!!!🤗😍🤗🙆👌👌
When will you be doing the next etsy stock? Thanks
Great vids Jon. You might consider Shearwater Pottery in Ocean Springs, MS as a place to visit, Great story to the place with family pottery works for almost a hundred years now.
Too bad I don't have a studio for you to visit!! I could've gotten you out of chilly MN. Love your videos!
It looks very interesting.
Wow that’s pretty cool
Love it!
Yeah, dude! Thanks for the sharing!
Come check out Seattle!
Come to Maryland!! The Clayground in Ellicott city is a great studio. I have been there for a pottery class as a team building exercise

I finished the video!
What is the lense you use for your videos.?
Perfect

Pottery road trip is a great idea!! Yes always do a cut at the end!! Can you bottle your energy?
I love the end of video dialogue
Do you think a hair dryer would work? I also have a kitchen blow torch - maybe that would work?
I combined this technique and the spiral mug tutorial to create a spiral pattern of cracks. Was a pain to apply the silicate but turned out pretty nifty
Going out to a friends house Monday. They have a big kiln still sitting in the crate for the past 5 years. What do you think?? Should I get it and have what ever is wrong with it fixed?? And it is in an old falling apart shed. Never used. And covered in plastic.
What if you heat the outside without sodium silicate added? Will it still crackle?
Can i use the sodium silicate on wall .. will it also crack?
Can you reclaim the clay if you don't like the way it turned out?
I participate in a group studio in Yucaipa CA. I’m sure we all would love a visit! I was wondering where to purchase sodium silicate. Also would love to see you attach handles on the crackle. You’re ADORABLE!!! Love your passion and I hope one day you will decide to visit my beautiful country CHILE 🇨🇱!
To bad we have the pandemia right now though.....🙄🤦♀️😷😷😷 so stay safe, stay home🤷♀️
If you dried the pot without the sodium silicate (?), would you get cracks or would it just tear it?
If you hand build, could you also use this technique?
You should come up to Wynyard, Saskatchewan. I run a small community based club. We have a base of 3.5 people. Would love to have you here.
All the way!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻❤️😊
You could do a Kickstarter or patreon campaign for the road trip, the same way you did your studio.
I would love to learn about pottery, I've been wanting to start a new hobby and love watching your videos. I live by waconia do you ever offer classes at all?
Passion!!!
My studio is in my house... I’d love to have you visit.
