    Good one Alan. My memory of collecting the Who back in the seventies was that albums like By Numbers and Quadrophenia were quite difficult to get so was a big moment when I found them. I didn’t get to see them live until shortly before JE died but quite a few opportunities since thankfully. Agree their boxsets are state of the art

    I first saw the Who in 1971 at the Warehouse. They were promoting Who's Next. I don't remember the first Who album I bought..... We are getting ready here for what will be Hurricane Francine. Should hit Louisiana coast on Wednesday. Don't know how close to New Orleans it will get yet. Fun!!! WHO ARE YOU, Alan Rosenberg!!!

    First Who concert, none, but my parents saw The Who with Zep as the opener, and they played during a T-storm!
    First Who elpee, Meaty Beaty... MCA reissue
    First Who compact cassette, Who's Next
    First Who ceedee, Who's Better Who's Best (BMG club issue)
    One of my best Who finds was a first Decca pressing of Tommy, near mint and complete with libretto, first record is sides 1 and 4, second record 2, sides 2 and 3.
    Good memories!

      Thanks so much for sharing. I remember the days of vinyl split like that because we had a spindle on our turntable and would pile the albums on it. And then when the side was over the next would "crash" down and play. Back then, we weren't so precious over vinyl. We played the hell out of it..lol. Meaty Beaty is an amazing compilation - one of my favorites. I don't know that concert - dont' remember hearing about Zep opening for The Who. That's amazing. Wonder where when that was. Talk about a double bill - that's wild. Thanks so much for sharing.

    My first Who album (mirroring your first, as with The Rolling Stones) was the compilation 'The Story of the Who', followed by 'Live at Leeds.' No older siblings in the house though. I began checking out books and albums at the library and met a friend at school who always added The Who into my discussions of The Beatles, Stones, and Led Zeppelin. Their inclusion into my list of bands completed my "Mount Rushmore" of rock bands!

    Great back story about your Who journey .... in UK I don't remember 8 track being that big a thing ... we swopped cassettes ... my mate made a mix tape for me with Wishbone Ash, BJH, BeBop Deluxe, Zep, etc ... and Substitute was on it ... what a tune ... so thereafter I checked out The Who Story, Meaty Beaty Big and Bouncy, saw the Tommy movie (enjoyed Tina and Clapton bits) ... first purchase was, I think, the Who Are You album (still one of my favourites) before exploring rest of catalogue ... saw Face Dances tour in Glasgow .... upper tier of the legendary Apollo where you were not allowed to stand as the balcony would swing up and down ... structurally insecure ... needless to saw the Who came on and blasted into the Kids Are All Right ... place goes nuts ... balcony sways up and down a good few feet! ... good times ... next saw them at Wembley for Live Aid in '85 .... awesome band ... and Pete is a superb songsmith and axe man ... favourites remain Who Are You, Who's Next, Tommy ... still "getting" Quadrophenia ... will need to revisit it ... Thanks my friend. I was watching a documentary a few months back on the Glasgow Apollo. I didn't realize it was long gone now. The story was always, one of the greatest and toughest audiences. You had to be good to play there, but if you were, it was the greatest and the place would literally rock. Well I read and watched about it, but you LIVED it. That's awesome. Thanks.

    The Who are another band I was exposed to at an early age thanks to my older siblings. They remain my brother's favorite band to this day. I love them as well, though I don't have quite his level of devotion, few people do. I think I connected with Quadrophenia right away, and it is not only my favorite Who album but a contender for my favorite album of all time. Oddly enough, another one I connected with right away was Face Dances, and back in the day I probably listened to that album more than Who's Next or Tommy! I think Face Dances is highly underrated, but of course nowadays I wouldn't rank it as high as those other two. Still love it though.

    • @TheAlanRosenbergShow
      @TheAlanRosenbergShow  6 дней назад +1

      Thanks Chris. I remember when Face Dances came out and critics went after it. It had Kenney Jones and not Keith Moon, Townshend had a successful solo career at that time and some felt Empty Glass was superior. But of course, they neglected to realize Moon was barely on Who Are You album and his skills were depleted. And You Better You Bet was and is one of the Who's biggest hits and still gets play. And the 1979 tour showed a very powerful rejuvenated Who. Is Faces Dances an all time classic - no. Are Face Dances and It's Hard better than many say....absolutely.

    Hi Alan,
    I got in The Who in 76 as I mentioned to you few times after I saw them at Charlton Football Club stadium. I don’t think I bought any of their albums in the 70’s as all my money was going on the Stones, Beatles and Beatle solo related back catalog. My cousin and some of my friends had a lot of the Who albums, so I taped some and was really familiar with most of them. The first Who LP I actually bought was My Generation which I think is an excellent debut album, it’s probably my 3rd favorite Who album. I couldn’t find your video where you rank your favorite Who albums but here’s my top 5:
    1. Who’s Next
    2. Quadrophenia
    3. My Generation
    4. Who Sell Out
    5. A Quick One
    I never really got into Tommy, I like some of the tracks but I just couldn’t get into the album as a whole. I have the rest of the Who’s studio albums (Who by Numbers Who Are You, Faces Dances and It’s Hard) but to be honest I don’t play them much and don’t remember what’s on them except for the singles. I’ve never bothered getting Endless Wire or Who.

    • @TheAlanRosenbergShow
      @TheAlanRosenbergShow  День назад +1

      Great choices - there is a Who ranking video - one of my first so it's older. One of the few that I filmed in my basement where most of my collection is, so its dark. Honestly there is a fairly big dip in quality after Quadrophenia. Endless Wire is actually pretty awful - I did a video on it in Treasure or Trash. Face Dances and It's Hard are good for what they are but not near the level of the earlier classics. I do really like The Who By Numbers - How Many Friends is an all time classic song for me. Slip Kid is great. Hard to argue with Who's Next - most would say it's their best album and song for song probably is, but not my favorite which is Quadrophenia. I also deeply love Sell Out. I agree that the debut album is great too. Thanks so much.

I also saw the movie (and bought that soundtrack) in 1979 as well and the movie I thought was spectacular. Still one of my favorite movies of all time. Yea... Quadrophenia is just on another level. My first Who album was a (cheap) 2 LP compilation '64-'74, quickly followed by everything I could get. Something you may already know is that the photo at the beginning of the booklet in Quadrophenia with Phil Daniels riding his scooter with Battersea Power Station behind him was what Pete wanted as the album cover but Roger vetoed it. Maybe Pink Floyd's Animals cover would be different if Pete got his way.

    First album, and the only Who album on vinyl I have ever paid full price for (once again, in the early seventies mates owned other Who albums so I didn't need to buy them) was Quadrophenia, still my favourite, although the extended mega-CD version of Live at Leeds is excellent, as you say - the original vinyl was probably the first Who album I ever got to listen to. First live gig: Charlton 1974, then Charlton 1976 (for many years apparently the official loudest gig ever), and then not until the 21st Century, 'cos Keith was gone, and I didn't really want to see them without him. By then it was semi-nostalgia anyway, but they were still damned good.
