All I can say Alex, Tavarish and all the other car you tubers. The reason why we enjoy your videos is because you are human, your not Hollywood who live in another world. we know that if ever we meet you in the street, we can say hi, how are you, love your content, and we know you will never shut us down, you will respond, even if its only a wave. Its like seeing a long lost mate. We respect your privacy and would never intrude on your private life. I'm housebound (between bed and couch) after a brain injury at work 3 years ago.
I've missed weddings, funerals, birthdays and everything in between.
I completely understand the mental health that makes you want to quit. For me it's life instead of a job though.
Thanks for making your content. It is genuinely one of the only things I can do now.
It still causes me pain to watch tv but if people can make car videos that interest me it's enough to push past the brain pain and have a moment of "normal"

I also think people who have a fan base think that their viewers want something of them that they aren't or don't want to be. The fact that the likes of Alex, Tavarish and Matt A all seem like decent regular guys is what makes what they are doing so inspiring, and why I for one like meeting or interacting with them.

    • @turbo_brian

I imagine a large part of it is that divorce is more likely with people who dedicate all their time to their job. All three of them have pretty drastically increased their fanbase over the past 3-4 years, which increases the demand on them to create more content and takes them away from their marriage. It seems like Ed produces the least content and still has his marriage.

Fantastic stuff. Thank you for talking about it openly, I know how much effort it takes, so its greatly appreciated. It helps remind people that they are not alone. It goes a long way to making people feel comfortable getting themselves into a better place and openly talking about something we all struggle with at some points in our lives and something that is normal, especially in traditionally masculine spaces. Its really important as its just as important as your physical health. If the mind and body aren't working together, its not gonna work at all. Strength is all encompassing. Really nice topic this one, I know I’m not very big on RUclips but instagram I was big at one point until I found myself questioning why I was doing it when I wasn’t enjoying it. I think this topic covers a lot for creative people who try and make what they do work, even making videos and working out what to put in those. There’s so much work involved that isn’t seen, also the anxiety, depression and panic attacks are just a part of it. The hard bit is working out when it’s actually having a bad effect on you and how you bounce back.
Alex, Rory and Taylor do an amazing job! You’re just people at the end of the day but what makes you different is you create content that helps people feel better or get through hardships.

The channels we follow we can see the suffering and struggle everyone goes through, and we don't mind hearing about. You guys are the faces of the video. The fans that are chering you on and want the best for you, the person with a negative comment still watched the video and helped the algorithm.

I went from having pretty good mental health to crippling within the space of a few months in 2020 and still haven't properly recovered - but looking at guys fixing cars which are past it and dealing with brokenness is one of the most encouraging parts of my day - because we all have to face it every day like you guys do when a part doesn't work or you know yourself - it's not in the least bit surprising to me me that you guys would suffer as youtubers - comments must be very hard to deal with - as tavarish correctly stated they focus on a weakness in us - but thank god there's always a possibility of upgrading the suspension and mapping !!! .. and many others have occupational related mental health issues - but tbh tavarish sounds like he might have been narc abused to me - it's got a distinctive fingerprint ( do you suffer confusion ? that's one of the primary markers ) - lots of that around too everybody's narcassism is coming out since the lockdown imho - thank you tavarish for your open book attitude it's very encouraging - the more we all appreciate that we all suffer from these type of things and share our experiences and get it out of the dark room the better - it;s not in the slightest bit. Alex I love the mental health aspect I hope you keep some of these videos in the mix - best of luck growing the chanel

I bumped into you coming out of the loo in the museum and it was one of those really awkward moments of wrong place to say hello and then you were grabbed by a couple of fans. 😂😂. What you and Freddy said about imposter syndrome is understandable but I think you both need to realise that you are both doing what so many people do on their driveways and in garages and you give us a voice and an identity. More importantly, you're ordinary guys like us who are passionate about the cars we build. Fully sympathise regrading the anxiety, it sucks the description of it being like waiting for the other shoe to drop constantly is spot on. When I was really suffering from it then I'd get panic attacks at work that would last all day for no good reason. As a contractor, I had to just push on and keep it hidden from the rest of the office because I couldn't afford to not work. I'd get them in the middle of the night and get night sweats. Just horrid. But it is always good to hear big names talking honestly about it as it really helps to know that nobody's life is perfect, we all have our struggles in one form or another. Never really been into Tavarish, largely because I just didn't really know about him, but the more I see him on other channels the more I realise I've been missing out on his stuff and need to catch up on it!

I had Hubnut come round as I offered him my Fiat Marea 1.9 JTD Weekend, he did a video about getting it started. It has been sitting on my drive for over 3 years, it started with no trouble once he had figured the Topdon out. As Ian was tinkering with it I went in and made him a brew, which you don't see in the video. Anyway one person made a comment on his youtube saying the owner ( me ) has left you to do everything.. This got to me as I had been helping him, had to cut half my hedge down so I could open the bonnet open.. So I understand why one person's comment can stick in your mind.. Anyway your channel is brilliant, if you want to see the video of the Marea its on Hubnut's channel and quite funny I think

Really good to hear this conversation. Men are just supposed to grind on, don't complain, earn the cheddar. It's hard man. Thanks for this podcast, I think I needed it.

What you guys all do elements off that we miss - the crazy bits of the old Top Gear that we miss, but with current style and relevance - the format works and it's working for you. The bits I love are the getting things sorted and the stuff that was always behind the scenes on Top Gear, preparing, fixing upgrading what was done - the technical bits. I spent nearly 20 years fixing my own, friends and my wife's cars until I decided at 45 that my body had had enough of crawling around outside on cold dark days and nights fixing things and I made my wife get a lease car with a service package! I still have my own car I love to work on (aside from the company EV) which is a very late model Saab 9-3 twin turbo (came with a chip programmed to in excess of 200BHP somewhere) which just lets me tinker and prep it to go back on the road. I watch your shows and dream of picking up a deal like the ones you do lol. Keep on keeping on but remember there is also more to life than pleasing the people, and that old trope you can please some people all the time but you can't please everyone all the time - just something you have to remind yourself off - and can your life exist without our affirmation...? yes, it can, so just enjoy the ride whilst it stays fun :)

My wife is a nurse and she says exactly the same; she can get 19 people that are unbelievably grateful and say how caring and wonderful she is, then that 20th patient will be abusive and rude and that’s all she’ll fixate on for days.
It’s difficult not to think about the bad stuff, but try and take an objective step back - everyone has bad days, chances are that either the person posted the negativity has their own $hit going on, or that the video just caught them on a bad day.
You guys are great - never lose sight of the massive base of support you have, and hopefully you get to continually enjoy what you do and share with us 😃👍

Its quite simple really, you guys are more real and relatable than anything on TV or other mainstream media. You've emerged through hard work, passion and authenticity and you understand your platform. Moreover, you are all humble and vulnerable when discussing the reality of its impact on you and your lives. You are the voice of new media, which is why you carry the 'influencer' monicker which you probably don't even like ....

You guys are doing a great job with this podcast, love watching it instead of listening to it. So fun to get to know all of you / your guests better!
@Rory - could you have Alex / guests / yourself talk about their thoughts on how a normal person like me / anybody else in the audience could start a RUclips channel? Tips, tricks, the do's and don'ts etc. Would be amazing to get some motivation and insight!

Didn't expect you two to be so emotionally intelligent and aware of mental health issues.
Kudos. We need to teach our young adults more about emotional intelligence.

It’s impressive how much tavarish (and I guess you too Alex) can’t take a compliment, or use a compliment to describe who he is or how he is. Like he’s being super humble, and he goes “I guess it makes you somewhat humble. Or I guess you come across as humble.” DUDE! Take the fucking compliment!! 😅 It’s sad… but I totally get it though. I really struggle to step back and look at my accomplishments as well. I’m never satisfied and fixate on failures or things to improve.
Thank you for talking about it. It’s nice to hear successful people admit it. It makes us (at least, me) feel more “normal” in a way. It’s a relief

Thank you for talking about mental health and how outsiders can think that you are fine when things just are not right. Your friends and supporters would rather hear "I'm not in a good place right now" then have you or anyone push too far.
