  • Hi Friends!
    Mics dicussed:
    Rode VideoMicro: geni.us/i0dA
    Rode Videomic Pro: geni.us/zDOzxL
    Rode Videomic Pro+: geni.us/kY01
    bonus - if you are looking at the Pro+ then id seriously consider the new Rode Videomic NTG: geni.us/OvAD
    This week I'm doing a quick test of 2 very popular Rode microphones. Ive used the Rode videomic Pro for a good few years and recently picked up the Rode VideoMicro as a second option and something smaller for vlogging. I've been so impressed with it that it got me thinking, is the videomicro good enough for most people? can you save a ton of money??
    I'll let you decide for yourselves after listening and watching the video but if you don't require the extra features that the rode videomic pro provides then the rode video micro actually sounds great to me.
    The rode videomicro is arguably the best mic for vlogging due to its size and this microphone comparison shows just how good it sounds next to the videomic pro. It's also a great budget microphone so won't break the bank if that is a consideration for you.

    I'm using the VideoMicro and my problem is that I'm getting a TON of background noise using it with my Fujifilm X-S10. I tried all kinds of settings and it's always the same. The Low Cut Filter makes it a bit less bad, but I basically can't use the audio without throwing FCP's Noise Removal on there, and that makes my voice sound a bit weird (although it does remove all the background noise). I also have a very cheap lav and it doesn't have this problem, so I don't think it's the camera. Do you have any advice? Thanks a lot!

    • @WillChidlow
      @WillChidlow  3 года назад +3

      Hi, I normally plug the micro either directly into my camera or into an audio recorder like the zoom h1. you can plug directly into a mac but you would need to change the settings so the headphone jack acts as an input (which then means you cant also use headphones at the same time) Alternatively you could buy a cheap audio interface which would give you a line in to use and more flexibility. Finally if you plan on doing lots of videos like this you might be better off looking at getting a usb mic as these are the simplest way to get good audio on a computer

    I think it would have been better to have the mics mounted above the camera for the test, as that's where most people will use them. Using a shotgun mic angled upward below the person speaking makes the audio very bass heavy, which I think is the problem with the videomicpro here. I'm pretty sure it's why sound recordists angle the shotgun downward from above the speaker in most situations?

    Thank you Will! that was very helpful! I already had the Rode VideoMicro, and after watching your video, I believe I am happy with what I got. That money can go into something else.
    I do have a question that I hope you can help me with: What kind 3.5mm cable to you use to extend it so far from the camera? Does it need to be a Rode to keep quality good? Or any extension will do? Also any recommendations for a stand for that mini mic?
    Thank you!

    • @WillChidlow
      @WillChidlow  3 года назад +3

      Hi Gus, thanks for watching! Personally i've only used a rode extension which i've been very happy with. I think cheaper options would also work but will probably be more prone to interference. As for stands, as the mini has a 1/4 20 thread you can mount on pretty much any stand, it all just depends on the application. I use a cheap boom mic stand most of the time, but also use a friction arm sometimes or a small tabletop stand

    • @WillChidlow

      this likely depends on the preamps of your camera. in this test i was recording into a cheap zoom h1 recorder which has nice preamps so that might be what made the difference. Canon cameras are particularly bad for preamps, when i moved over to Sony i noticed an immediate improvement

    using my micro directly on my canon dslr creates a lot of humming in the background. how did you reduce the humming effect is it editing? I tried lowering the Db on my canon but that created way too low audio. what's the best option ?

    • @WillChidlow
      @WillChidlow  3 года назад +1

      This is a common issue with canon cameras, they use very poor quality preamps that produce noise unless used at very low levels. I got the best results using the videomic pro with my canon as I could boost the gain on the pro by +20db and keep the canon levels on very low. With the micro this of course isn’t possible which leave your only options to either remove the hum in post or use an external audio recorder with a cleaner preamp. Hope that helps

      @@WillChidlow i have the Micro on canon 600D, but can't get rid of noise, even in post! Thought of buying lav mic, but I kind of like to hear some ambient sounds... so it seems like the rode videomic PRO is the only option to remove hiss.

    Side by side the Pro is noticeably better. But if you did a video with only the micro it’s passable and wouldn’t deter from the video.

    Did you mount the mics on the camera and test them? No , then it’s not a complete test

      I think a lot of people like it because it sounds so bright in comparison
