Thanks man
Jesus really?
When he said he was going to read poetry I was expecting some profound masterpiece... I was not disappointed.
Reuben Hawkins 😝
I was hoping for Vogon poetry.
At least a true test of the Rode linup ! ... Thank you so much.
Thanks Johannes!
I agree!
Røde please.. it's not Rode...
@@TheLittleChicken English language speakers don't have that on their keyboards and every single person in the world knows what you're saying when you say Rode.

I love the way you structure, edit, and film your reviews: easy for even a newbie / non-techie like me to understand. Clear, logical, comprehensive. Thanks so much!
That is easily one of the best educational videos ever. Thank you
I learned something about a mic I already own. Turn it up to +20db. Thanks for the shoot out Caleb!
Thanks Greg! +20db is the bomb!
are there many circumstances where you WOULDN'T want it set to +20?
i want to know too
probably when youre in a really loud envirnoment, like at a concert
The tl;dr version is the GO will give you better sound quality than the internal microphone, but if you want noise reduction you have to go PRO. You won't regret it though, you get a lot for the price, and the microphone is very versatile (it comes with the standard boom/mic stand mount as well)
This is phenomenal! I immediately shared it with three friends who are in the market for an on-camera mic right now. Thank you!!
Thank you Hammerhaus! Helps a lot when viewers share videos!
bravo! just did a video about the micro a few days ago. Preamp is the real key! Canon preamps, just brutal. Panasonic preamps are very decent. surprisingly.
Panasonic preamps are decent. When audio is crucial, I run the Rode VideoMic Go into a Zoom H1, then into the camera. Dual Recording is always a beneficial feature, the Zoom's recordings are also uncompressed.
Good tip Greg!
Thanks for this; I've been searching the net for whether you can use the VideoMic Go with a Zoom H1 (which I already have). Might need to go get one!
I watched this before picking up my GO. The quality of your videos, and amount of work you put into your videos is awesome.
Your explenation as to why you're using the worst possible DSLR to create a baseline, earned you my subscribe! Appreciate that.
Was gonna stop watching, but holy shit those shots man. Good camera work caleb!!
Haha! Thanks Scuba!
Client wanted to know what mic we should purchase, came right to DSLR Video Shooter to find a review! SO HELPFUL! Thanks Caleb!
12:41 Final recommendation
Love that you included the pre-amp example, plus how you did this entire video. So fricken nice to have 'analytic' included with 'real examples'
I think you could have memorized Humpty Dumpty.
I think one should remember thats all of the mics can easily be improved in postproduction by eq, compression and noise suppression. When recording the same voice in the same environment you could even work with templates. So don´t despair when you can only afford the cheap ones.
This is how mic reviews should be. As a sound engineer, I sincerely approve! 😁👏❤️
This was so well done. I’ve been getting by with the VideoMic Go, and while I love the lack of batteries of having to use a power switch, the sound is really thin and harsh. This video confirmed a lot of what I’ve been experiencing.
This was great. Would love it if you made one on the Stereo Mics 🎤
Really like the approach here with the standardized test followed by the voice test. Makes for a really complete comparison, great job.
Thanks HW2H! Was hoping it all made sense!
Great comparison. I've been using the videomic pro for a couple of years now and absolutely love it. And the mic uses little power because those 9v batteries last a very very long time!
Love your vids man 👍🏽
Huge. Your tests, review and explanations were thorough, partially scientific, and excellent. This made it possible and pleasurable to sit through a 15 minute video. So many DSLR and consumer tech reviewers and influencers talk fast and have great presence, but they lack an understanding of tech specs and tech expertise. So often I catch them using big words, but unaware of the meaning or the scientific principles involved. Your depiction and description of cardioid and super cardioid were accurate and not to tech or over the top for the consumer and prosumer users. So many of the other RUclipsrs out there unaware, and trying to learn the basics and are hearing a ton of misinformation or versions of what's right and wrong, repeating it, and sounding like fools. Kudos to you. I will be subscribing and tuning-in in 2017.
He needed his phone to read one line from Humpty Dumpty?? lol
Hahaha! I actually read the entire original poem, but cut it down in post to save time. Ain't nobody got time for a 22 minute video!
DSLR Video Shooter HAHAHAHA!!
@@dslrvideoshooter 🤣🤣🤣SO FUNNY
Thank you so much! I decided to pick the micro. I mostly only take photos but every now and then I take video and this microphone is just perfect for what I need, a simple plug and play.
OMG Thais was so helpful. Thank you for your review. I have the canon EOS70D and I’ve just got the video mic GO and Istill hear the white/hissing noise like I was recording with the intern micro of the camera. I guess I should get the pro now...
@@kempetai2099 😂😂
should be the standard for product comparison videos. Especially appreciate the quick side by side after the longer side by side
Amazing test. I'm glad you did the 1st SPL test with a 1k tone for consistency. Hands down as far as dynamic range, the Rode Videomic Pro won the battle. Also, the equalizing possibilities are plentiful with the videomic pro. Thank you for sharing, just ordered the videomic pro while typing this lol.
Thanks Archie! Means a lot. And yes, that Pro has great dynamic range. Almost too much in the low freq range, but like you said, EQ options are plentiful.
Thank you for this! I have 2 Rode Pro's and have always wondered if I was spent too much and could get away with one of the cheaper versions. I must say, ramping up the pro's to +20 and pulling back on the levels in the camera really give it a robust sound, more depth.
I know now I made the right choice by spending the extra money on the Rode Pro's.
Keep up the great work. Review Review Review! For poor people like myself, it is awesome when a reputable community member does real world reviews and explains the finer details that a " sales video " wont or can't do.
Thank you!
Very interesting review but you've missed something on the Videomic!
This too has the boost features of the Videomic Pro but the switch isn't as accessible!
If you have a look in the battery compartment you'll find there is a switch with settings for 0dB, -10dB and -20dB. You need something like a toothpick to flick them into each position, but it's simple enough when you see it.
OK, this isn't as convenient as the Videomic Pro but it's definitely there,
It would be useful if you could re-run your tests on the Videomic to see what results you can achieve using these options and whether they come near to those you achieved with the Videomic Pro.
I was thinking the same thing. I wanted to ask why he did not try the other settings. I have 2 of these mics and the micro as well. The outside has at least 2 settings and more under the battery.
Cool. I thought for sure the +20 db boost would introduce more noise. Glad to know it comes through clean.
Can anyone tell me what Humpty Dumpty was doing?
;-)
no no he had a great fall don't you remember?
Melvin Jose no idea
He fell off the wall and broke his shells, right.... or, he humped too much and he broke his shells!
I couldn't believe nobody made a video about this. But now, voila, here it is. Thanks a lot, helped out big time.
Thank you Marnix! So glad you enjoyed it. And yes, there seems to be a lack of straightforward audio tests/recommendations out there.
You've got yourself a new subscriber. Had been checking out your video's in the past, but it has now reached the point where I don't want to miss anything you publish anymore. Keep it up!
Thank you Marnix. Means a lot! Glad to have you aboard!
Great test as always Caleb! I use the Video Mic Pro/G7 combo (learned the G7 from your paid tutorial on Vimeo) and will upgrade to an external pre soon. Ironically, it’s used in my recording studio where I have $2000 mic pres and expensive mics:-) But, I’m lazy and like recording audio into the camera.
SOOO much research to just find this video. I have a canon, and every person only glazed over canon cameras with these mics but never explaining why they aren't great beside the pro version. Thank you I really needed this for my finally decisions!
First Off Amazing Review! Best I've seen. Nice cinematic shots too.
I have the Røde VideoMicro and thought it sounded great on my camera. It's great for the price. I think if your and indie filmmaker just wanted a mic on your camera the Micro is your friend.
In this test I found the Pro had way to much bass. The original VideoMic didn't sound too bad.
All in all for convenience, price, and quality go for the micro. :)
Thank you Nate! Yeah, damn good that Micro is... And yes, I fine myself taming the Pro with some EQ work in post most of the time I use it. The high pass option helps, but almost takes too much out.
Thanks for the info. I have the Go and now just upgraded to the Pro. Looking forward to testing it out.
Now THIS is how you do a review
Straight to the point, lays down the facts. Back to the youtube roots. Thank you guy.
Great comparison! Best I've seen in a long time.
Finally. Someone did a complete accurate test on the Rodes. You are a great man Caleb.
"I'm going to read you some poetry"
...
"Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall"
this is a top quality video. You answered all my questions and more. It was really fun to watch you and also educational too. I learnt a lot more than what i was coming to this video for. Thanks for a quality upload. loved it.
Very nice, thanks! Please do the equivalent video with lav mics ;)
I use the Mic j 044 plugged into a zoom h1. I'm wondering what would be more important to upgrade, the recorder, or the lav mic? Not sure if the H1 even has a pre amp, and which zoom would be best to get? Thanks!
Something I have found that helps with the video micro and canon hiss, is to record low, and then boost in post.
"Humpty dumpty sat on a wall" humpty dumpty sat on a wall" 😂 that part got me .
I love his on-screen personality and his calm, monotone delivery. Great work man!
Epic, indeed! Nice practical comparison.
Hi, Curtis. Good to see you´re here, man ! You also make damn good reviews !
I just got the VideoMic Pro after a VideoMic GO, I LOVE IT
Did you know that the VideoMic Rycote also has a gain setting of +10 and +20db? I did not see you adjust or use this? The VideoMic Rycote actually gives pretty much the same results as the VideoMic Pro ....
I have tested this and you are right, the difference is very minimal.
Really good review. I wish I would have seen a video like this after having experimented with all kinds of mics and recording devices before figuring out what I have now. Fortunately, there were a lot of resources to read but it's nice when someone like you takes the time to sum it up into a concise video with proof.
Great stuff Caleb! Always informative and helpful. Looking forward to your budget LED video. 👍👊
Sir, we were looking for a MIC and we have a very low budget so our purchase should be well thought. And let me tell you, you have made it so easy to make a decision!! Thank you so much!
cheers!!!
What about recording audio externally to the ZOOM H1?
>>>> CONGRATULATIONS DSLR Video Shooter...
Do you know if a Nikon D3200 would be better off with a preamp or direct connection? Great vid :)
Incredibly helpful thorough comparison thank you!
Awesome Comparison bro!
Can you please tell which mic you used for your video in this?
Wow, outstanding test, Caleb. Love the effort and production value you're pouring into these videos.
what an amazing reviewer..
thumbs up from saudi arabia brother.. i'd owe you a beer but they don't sell them here xD
Big thanks man good video and info! I'm not even to dslr yet just my iPhone with a videomic go, and biggest thing I've learned is I have to put it on a boom and get it closer!
Damn bro. This video was so helpful! I shoot on a t5i. I just bought and returned the vm go. It was bad
Jusy want too say great review very thoroughly done! Propz...
What mic would anyone advise for my canon 700d
Zoom h1 does not have great preamp. Other than that i agree. You could use Saramonic SmartRig amp if you have mic that requires more powah.
I thought you could just take the 3.5 from smartrig and plug it to zoom h1?
Yes, really depends on situation and field conditions.
why not just get the rode videomic pro? surely thats easier than carrying around a preamp swell as the rode videomicro
Depends what you're shooting. If you seriously want to do something it's better to have mic on external recorder and boom pole to get good audio. Sticking the mic on camera is just a run and gun method for me.
i really like your reviews. super objective, calm, no bullshit. Appreciated.
I have a rode mix pro but I still get bad audio... Does any one know the best settings for the rode video mic pro for VLOGs - I cant figure it out lol - I either Clip or have it to low or cant hear when I turn the camera (I Know its a shotgun mic) but, still I see people use it and get clear audio. I get horrible audio. :/
Bayardo A Rugama Check the levels
Bayardo A Rugama boost mic +20db, then set camera volume preamp to 1 above silent. watch levels from there and aim for -12db to -6db. if it hits 0, then you are clipping.
To start, keep your mic within 3 feet for you (at most 3 feet).
I don't know what camera you have but if you have a flip screen or can hook it up to a external monitor (through HDMI) do a test recording and look at the audio levels ... that's a good indication of your recording levels. If they don;t go into the yellow you are probably recording too softly. If they are hitting the red then you are too hot. Then adjust your cameras levels (or switch to +20 or -120 DB on your mic since it has that option).
If your camera has a headphone jack for monitoring, get a decent set of headphones and do a test run while listening (you might need an extension for your headphones).
I used my iPhone 5c with a recording app with no mic on it and used audacity to take out the noise and boost the audio a little and it sounded great. So I'm convinced with any mic you have you can use it and bring it into audacity to clean up the noise and be set. If your interested just RUclips "how to clean up noise in audacity".
David Biondo where can I learn about doing that in audacity?
The most professional and effectively informative review I've seen about these mics.
Thank you :)
I've got a 600D😑
And do you have any microfon on it ? And if you have how it sounds like ?
me too, which one would be the perfect mic?
Fantastic - so helpful seeing all of those mics in one place instead of trying to cobble together an opinion across multiple reviews.
Side shopping tip - if anyone is trying to save some money to buy one of these used, make sure you get the Lyre mounted version. The old ones with the rubber-band suspension don't hold up well to anything beyond hobby use.
Thanks Ken! And great tips on buying... Those rubber bands don't hold up super well.
Man this is sucks because i watch other videos and they say VideoMic is a better choice. I just got VideoMic today lol
Its a great choice... Caleb didn't mention the switches beneath the battery...take a gander and be extra happy with your purchase!
I have a GH4 and all of the Rode Mics. And i really love the cheapest one, the micro. Its so tiny, needs no battery and has this cute fur. I also use one of these on my Sony PXW-X70 as ambient-backup-mic and it works great. But there i need an XLR-Adaptor and 48V Phantom Power. Thank you for your work, great video!
how good/Bad is the preamp in the g7 ???
JwP - Tech & Stuff the preamp is solid on the G7! Very comparable to the Gh4 in this video. I use a G7 with Video Micro for 90% of the videos on my channel. Hope that helps.
yea helps a lot :p do u tweak the audio in post ? looked at some of ure latest vids.. audio was pretty good !
JwP - Tech & Stuff just play with the levels a little bit, that's it! Thanks for checking them out, and glad it helped!
Very good. Probably similar to the GH4 as Joel mentioned.
This is "just" a gear test, but man the production value you put into it is just phenomenal !! Eye candy :D
Does the panasonic g7 count as a "newer mirrorless camera"? Does it have a good preamp?
Panasonic has great preamps unlike Canon cameras like the 70D, 80D, 6D which he has and even 5D mark 2/3/4. So you would do fine with a GO or Micro if you are on a budget, which in my guess you are on a budget because you got a G7. G7 is great for $500-600 btw, nice choice!
JJ thanks! I went for the takstar sgc598, some kind of chinese mic but based on most reviews it seems to be pretty good for 30 bucks.
Kobben have received your mic yet? I'd be curious to hear (pun intended) how you got on. I just bought the G7 too.
Eye In The Sky yes, I just got it a few days ago and so far it seems all good although I haven't really tested it for real. But I mean it does make the audio noticeble better.
I went with g7 and sgc 598 aswell. I might have to get recorder if i boom the mic. Zoom h1 + Saramonic SmartRig amp + sgc 598 cheap budget. Also the possibility to monitor the audio with zoom h1 is good.
EDIT: Bad thing about audio in g7 is that it compresses the audio file a lot.
thorough AF! What an awesome review, heard all I needed to hear. Thanks for that, cheers mate!
Знатный балабол) я помню как он ещё рекламировал "супер-стабильные" стэдикамы мёрлин под видом независимого обзора :)))
Finally! The video that the whole RUclips filmmaking community needed. Thanks Caleb for making these great videos. Keep up the awesome work! :)
Was definitely stressing about how terrible the sound was and if it was gonna sound terrible on the a6300 as well I'm so glad you tested it on the a6300 as well THANK YOU!
wow the change from the canon 6d to the sony a6300 was huge, so glad to hear that since im buying the sony with a videomic go. Thanks you so mucho for this comparisons!
Thanks for the video! Was going to get the Rode Go but since the Rode Micro sounds good and comes with the wind shield I wanted, I'm sold.
Nice! Glad you enjoyed the video Lily!!!
Worth mentioning about the Rode 3.5mm extensible cable. It's an option for getting your mic within the 12" you spoke about, while keeping distance from camera. Works great for interviews setups etc.
Great point, I should have mentioned that. I've been using this $6 25' cable for a while and love it: amzn.to/2fDy9Xg You can see me using it for the voice tests. Overkill sometimes but great when length is needed!
Thanks so much! Buying a mic for my son & I really needed some guidance.
Caleb. I just discovered your content. Absolutely fantastic stuff. Anybody can talk into a camera as we all know. But it's your supporting visuals and graphics that differentiate your stuff, superb. Kudos. Also, kudos for recognizing the value of those Sony mirrorless cameras. Just to prove I have more money than brains, I own: Canon 70D with all sorts of high end lenses, Sony A5100, Sony A6000, and a Canon C100, Mark II. So ... guess which camera is actually the most practical for video shooting - even on a tripod? The A5100. Quick, easy, sharp as a tack, flip forward screen. I over-purchased again and put audio into a Zoom H6N instead of into the A5100's audio jack. But, all things considered ... man, that Sony stuff is great. (Except - the overheating problem - in which case we're all scrod.) Keep up the great work.
I've seen a ton of reviews regarding the rode mic's and yours was the first to mention the importance of what camera the mic is used on. I bought a cannon m50 and a rode mic and was disappointed with all the static noises. I'll be returning my rode mic go to get a pro.
One of the best reviewers i have seen so far, thank you!
So nice to have such a thorough review that's not only entertaining, but informative! Thanks!
The Micro is such an interesting idea. I just got the Pro+ which is now my favorite by far, but I like the simplicity of the Micro.
Excellent. Trust you're as good behind the camera as you are in front.
No arm waving or odd mannerisms - clear reviews well shot. Thanks a bunch.
One little question: noticed you used a cable extension to link your Rode micro when you had the mic off camera (at 9'.06"). I have a cable I use for exactly that purpose but suffer terrible attenuation (probably a cheap cable). Any recommendations for a good quality extension cable ? (I'm in the UK)
Just the comparison I've been looking for. I really liked the technical diagrams too. I know which one to pick now. Thanks!
Thank you Tony! Happy VideoMic'ing!
This was very borough and great and awesome idea to pair and compare with different cameras
Hm ! Finally i found THE rode mic comparison video ...
Really good job ! Thank you ! Helpfull video wich is simple and goes deep in essentials details !
Fantastic video comparing all of these products. So much value packed in 15 minutes, thanks!
Rode Mic PRO takes the cake for ALL TESTS. I love this mic!!!!
This cannel just blows my mind what an amazing and super well done comparations and reviews! Amazing! Thanks a lot dude!
amazing video. You clear some many doubts that I didn't even know that I had. Thanks a lot man! As video will be not my main goal with my new future camera, I'm thinking going with the 80D.
Awesome video Caleb! I just placed an order for the Videomicro for my Sony A6400.
This was a great comparison video. Liked that the micro was very front and center in this video and not overlooked as it's the cheapest of the bunch. I currently own the micro and think at it's price point, it's wonderful.
Well done, sir! I just purchased the Rode VideoMic for my Sony a77 mkII. So far, so good... Keep up the good work!
I closed my eyes and just listened to each one as to not be influenced by any bias and the pro sounds the best. Rich, clear no white noise and not tinny at all. I say either the micro or the pro. If you got the cash, get the pro. Otherwise, the micro is good enough.
I did subscribe to your channel. I just got the Rode VideoMic for my Canon 80D and it makes a huge difference to no mic on my videos. Most of my vids are of my Z06 but I do sometimes make How To Fix videos with the Vette and it helps to be heard. Thank you for sharing your experience.
Thanks for all the hardwork on this one , lot of people like me would find this insightful.
Thank you for noticing Sanket, not a quick video lol. But it was a lot of fun to discover the differences between the mics.
