      To be honest, the Deadcats are kind of expensive for what they are, probably because of Rode's branding. I recommend getting a $5 one from Ebay or Amazon, which works just as well. Be sure to check the dimensions before you buy though. Also: 10:59 -> Don't forget to "Always Rig to the Right!"

    I think the video was great, it was very complete dealing the pros and cons in a way beginners would understand. Its not easy to find videos that have the sounds tests as you provided. Only downside the decibel chart didn't seem to match its location to the mics behind, so it was hard for me to follow as i am very new to the product names and specs. overall loved it!

    I used to work at this tech company where we recorded internal stuff like external speakers and important company wide announcements. When I got there they had the Rode VideoMic mounted on a camcorder and that was the kit I was working with. I was not impressed with the Røde to say the least. I actually ended up using my personal Zoom h4n after a few times and to me it just sounded sooooooo much better. Mind you I'm actually a newbie when it comes to audio stuff. I had the H4n because I was a gear junkie that wanted to start doing more video stuff but never really did.

    Interesting comparison, but this test would have been better if your room had had some sonic treatment. The Røde VideoMic sounds best actually from seemingly not picking up the room reverb as much as the others, so if you'd had a treated room, the result might have been different.

    2. Does it still pick our voice loud.?
    3. Can I use third party extensions cable to connect video micro to my Canon 700D?

    I don't think it's fair to compare how much they block noise from the back, since each are designed for different things. There is a reason why sometimes you want a supercardioid versus a cardioid mic, and each one doing its job for what it was designed for.

  • @kahnjugaming
    @kahnjugaming 5 лет назад +10

    Please be warned that this video is incredibly misleading.
    As someone who has been working with sound for a very long time, I have to clarify something.
    When you're working with sound(editing it), it's a much better idea to cut frequencies than to boost them. The reason why the more expensive microphones capture more sound is so that during the editing process the integrity is kept. So, no. It may be a lot easier to boost, but by doing that, you actually degrade the sound. It is destructive.
    I know it may sound weird, but that is how it works. Again, when editing sound, it's better to cut than to boost.

    • @kahnjugaming
      @kahnjugaming 5 лет назад

      @@brandonkriegerKNSS It really depends on what you're trying to aim for. I would suggest a mic with a high pass filter, a good noise to sound ratio, something with -20db to -10db to 0 to +10db to +20db.

    • @BrandonKrieger
      @BrandonKrieger 5 лет назад

      Wealth Coach Kahnju Ecleo what would you recommend then?

    • @kahnjugaming
      @kahnjugaming 5 лет назад

      @@BrandonKrieger From the ones in the video? If you know how to process audio, buy the most expensive one. If you have no knowledge about it, buy the cheapest. In the world of sound, it's either you buy the cheapest or the most expensive or you buy what your money can buy, but there are items that are just for luxury (made for audiophiles).
      The problem with this video is that it only talks about rode on-cam mics. You can check the specs and find something equivalent from other brands.

    Yeah, I own a Canon T3i/600D and it has a nasty hiss at higher audio levels.
    So if anyone is having that kind of issue, you're gonna need that +20 DB option so you can lower the in camera audio to kill the hiss.

    EXCELLENT video with rigorous methodology and useful result data. Waaaaay better than the usual hot air of RUclips. Thank you, sir, for taking audio recording *seriously* although that is obvious from the quality of your own output. Subbed.

    I came back to this video because I noticed my Rode VideoMic Go was introducing static and hiss in my videos and wanted to see what mic is should get to replace it. I thought maybe it just quit on me. Nice (and sad) to know that it's not just my mic...

    Great shootout! Myself, I have a VMPR and cheep VideoMicro and I completely agree with you that the cheeper mike sounds much better. What I also noticed is that the comments that I make as a videographer from the behind of the camera sound extreamly muffled and low quality with VMPR and much better with VideoMicro. I think it would be great if you could add your own voice recording from the behind of the camera, and not only brown noise rejection test.

    The quality difference seems to be greatly effected by the equipment each mic is connected to so the quality is not mic dependent but camera dependent as well. Try these same tests with different cameras for truer quality comparisons

    • @MaksimYuryev

      All of the mics were tested connected to the same Sony so the tests were fair, and Sony mirrorless cameras have the best pre-amps when compared to the competition.

    Super useful video! I just ordered a RØDE VideoMicro Compact last night then watched your video afterwards (yeah I did that the wrong way round I know), but how good it was to hear how well it holds up. Although I have no idea how to boost Bass in editing, so I will be looking to see if you have a video showing how to do that next (if not there is a video idea for you). :-) My camera is a Sony a6400 so I am guessing that will be similar in sound quality to your a6500, so was great you mentioned the camera you used too. Thanks again for a super useful video.

    I think takstar mic that you use for main recording is better than all.....

    • @ericklorena
      @ericklorena 6 лет назад +9

      You can find some videos comparing videomicro and the other rodes with it. It's really great for the price, but the downside is that Rode mics last forever. My takstar just died after about 1 year =/

    After buying the $150 VideoMic I learned the Nikon in-camera mic is pretty good. The VideoMic has a slightly fuller sound, unfortunately, it also records the autofocus much better. When you buy a longer cord and a stand you can put the Rode mic at a distance from the camera to eliminate the focusing sounds. For on-camera use, these mics seem a waste of money. (I haven't tested sounds recordings at a long distance from the camera.)

    But why would you be using the eye piece during video? Pretty much any DSLR or mirrorless would have a screen you would use for framing the shot. Helpful video though.

    • @MaksimYuryev
      @MaksimYuryev  5 лет назад

      Some mirrorless has sharper EVF’s than LCD’s. I’m very bright conditions you’ll see perfectly through and EVF if the LCD isn’t bright enough or hard to see in direct light. If your shooting handheld and want the most stabile shots and more.

    I thought the video micro for a while and was surprised at how well it worked and wouldn’t hesitate to get another one. If you’re on a budget you can’t beat the Rode Video Micro.

    Why not just just a forward coldshoe extender? No big deal. If you are buying a 300 dollar mic a few bucks to make it work for you I think would be acceptable

    What about stereo video mics?

    • @sonicjackalopeproductions3342
      @sonicjackalopeproductions3342 2 года назад

      Stereo microphones aren't often Shotgun microphones. Most of those mics are actually hyper-cardioid condenser microphones, which don't act the same way. The Videomic line from Rode are shotgun mics

    great information... i still ended up buying the most expensive one, i think it all depends on preference... i have a problem remembering to turn on my microphones, even in a professional environment. So, while i'm freelancing, i'll be forever forgetting to turn on my mic and the most expensive one will cure me of that problem... also, i think it all depends on what you are using these mics for, not everyone needs them for youtube, podcast, or something of that nature... but i believe that ANY mic, besides the onboard camera mic, will be 100x better... just my opinion.

  • @ArlynEmrys

    when your using a 3.5 mm jack you need to be sure you have a good input. If you record those mics directly to a zoom H5 or H6, you will see different results. The zoom H4n doesn't have as good a pickup, & neither do many cameras. Movo SMM5-R is a shockmount for the top of camera. Also another person recommended a Sescom LN2MIC-ZOOMH4N cable to reduce noise.

    they are designed to protrude or at least have minimal protrusion so that it doesn't go over your lens. most people wouldn't use their viewfinder when making a video. which is more important, the mic in your video or a little inconvenience not being able to use your viewfinder.
