I very recently purchased the Pro Plus and I love it!!! The auto on off feature is just great and the battery lasts ages once charged. I use mine with a long cable and a boom pole and it sounds so much better than my old sound (which was just the internal camera mic on the 80D). I probably need to play with it more to get the best out of it but am very happy with it. The battery door is really simple too, I watched too many videos of frustrated people with the pro.
I just bought a cheap tripod boom mic stand, think it only cost me something silly like £19. I didnt need anything massively portable or heavy as i dont really move it with the content I am currently doing. I will possibly upgrade in the future as have plans to do other content but for now its fine. Only disappointment was it doesnt fit on the RODE desktop tripod so will need an adapter in case I even want to use it like that.
I’m still using my Videomicro that you suggested many moons ago. I just can’t justify the upgrade. It’s probably the best $50 I’ve spent on gear for my channel.
Alex Rudd Music I didn’t say I couldn’t tell, I said I couldn’t justify. I’ve used on board mics of my G7X for awhile on my channel and never gotten a complaint about the autofocus noise. It drives me crazy but no one else seems to mind. I shoot vlogs and the Videomicro with the Panasonic amp in my G7 sounds great. In fact, I’d take a LUMIX with a Videomicro over a Canon with a Video Mic Pro for audio any day. The preamps are just that much better.
Sean, the auto on/ off setting is my favourite as well. For $50 more than the last version I think it is well worth the upgrade. Thanks for sharing the tech review.
Hi Sean, I just started to do videos in Arabic language, and I have been Following your tips. I bought the rode pro last week and it looks great. I will keep crushing it😃😃. Thank you
I just got this mic, i needed to upgrade. i previously had the movo vxr10, it started glitching 2 years after use. IT WAS TIME, lol. so happy with my choice of getting this mic.
I need headphones. The pro sounded slightly louder. The pro plus sounded slightly crisper. But not a big sound difference. The new features look like the big plus.
I’ve been using the videomic go for over a year & I think it’s time for the pro plus. The go has been giving me a lot of hissing and crackling sounds as of late!
I currently use the Pro, but I've had to send it in to get repaired due to shorting out, so I feel like I would benefit from upgrading to the plus. That way if the wire does short out again, I can just simply replace the wire, instead of shipping the mic to be repaired. Just my opinion! Great review of both mics!
THANK YOU SO MUCH for all of your great videos and content!!! Anytime I need reviews on anything tech I come to YOU and I always leave with my mind clear about the products and what I need to buy for myself. THANK YOU!
maybe pro plus is tad better, at 6:10 background noise seemed lower but auto on and off, also rechargeable battery with USB to charge it is great! price sucks though, should be under $200, I can buy PS4 or PS VR or canon cam for that price which has way more tech than this mic.
I have a RODE VideoMic Pro and am really happy with it. Biggest lesson learned was getting a wide angle lens that allows me to stand close to it. Within 2-5 feet max. Remember your video on the Tokina 11-16 F 2.8? I picked one up! Appreciate the tips.
@7:00 body language head-shake is saying no, verbal is saying yes! .... hmm I would listen to the subconscious and say no, go with the Original, save some money 😀
That shake of the head was more like "it's a no brainer". Nobody would nod their head in that situation. Reading body language is pretty much bullshit.
I'm moving up from iPhone 7+ and Garmin Virb to a G85 and the Rode plus mic. We really appreciate your excellent videos. I do travel videos from my motorcycle. Also, is there a group I can join that just does videos? I'm still learning. I have 25 vids on you tube and my last one is always the best. I love to have the experts critique my videos.
Hi Sean, I have bought my first ever DSLR, Canon 1300D. I prefer to take photos with my camera. But sometimes I wish to record videos as well. Unfortunately I heard a lot that, it's bad to the camera to shoot videos with a camera that you use for photography. Is it true? What do you think? Please help me out. I am just a beginner. I love your videos anyway.
i think it is worth it. I am a woman and I do not like hassle so the quality is worth it for the new features, especially the battery life and versatility.
Excellent review and comparison of the two models, this video outlined exactly the questions I had regarding both Models. Opinion? The battery upgrades on the Pro+ alone are worth the price. So many other pieces of equipment in my kit use AA batteries, that's a deal closer for me. Also impressed with Auto On / Off, and the digital versus analog controls. The sound wasn't dramatically different between the Pro and the Pro+ in your video that I could tell offhand. For those who may be reading this on Thanksgiving day in the United States (2018), there are deals today and tomorrow on these, the Pro+ is US $264 (B&H and Amazon). Good luck to all.
You just convinced me to get the pro plus but out sounded worse during the test inside. When you recorded outside, did you use the dead cat for both microphones? Thank you!!
I just bought my first external microphone & choose the Rode Pro Plus so I didn’t have to upgrade. I went for the newest Rode Pro Plus $299 at Best Buy. Thanks Sean.
The PLUS's plug is poorly placed and interferes with one's forehead when attached on top of a DSLR or mirrorless. Its a fatal flaw in its design. Busy shopping for such a mic right now and really frustrated by this as the pro+ ticked all other boxes for me. I'm new to your channel. Good work BTW. New sub.
Interesting. Original Videomic Pro example seems to be less background noise but also slightly less sharp vocals, while Proplus may be a little sharper on vocals but more definite rumble from traffic in background. Seems like internal gain may be increased on Proplus but to no great effect if it also increases ambient noise? I'm looking for a mic that cuts out wind noise so I just don't know which is more suitable. Maybe the Pro Plus due to extra filter controls?
i am a current owner of the pro. while hearing audio test with both. i dont notice a difference. its all great quality. BUT i would love to upgrade bc i love the new features, rechargable battery, auto on and off with camera (especially i forget to turn the mic back on when i film) and detachable cable. the cable on the pro is very thin. since i film with it at home only, its fine. but if i were to take it out vlogging, its possible for easy wear and tear. with the detachable cable. its easier to replace and since i still only film at home i still have that option to take it out knowing if there is wear and tear i can just simply get a new cable without having to get a whole knew mic.
In the outdoor test I heard WAY more noise/wind cars going by etc, when you stopped talking with the PLUS...hmmmm That is not good...Was that a fluke or is that the case?
They sound the same but you pay more for the plus because if the other great features like turns on and off with camera and has way more on mic features and has a removable cable. I have the video mic go and if you want to learn more and see the sound quality watch my RUclips videos. But I’m soon upgrading to the video mic pro plus, it’s just to good to not get. For vlogging and professional use just unbeatable.
I love this it's very informative. I'm looking t buy a RODE mic for my Canon SL2. Which by the way you helped me find the right camera for me!!! I loved your video on volgging cameras it was really helpful and informative.
Thanks for the advice also i think the plus is a little bit better

Perfect for film maker. One thing... the buttons on the rear. By pressing them it just feels like you're going to break the shock mount. Pretty sure that will be their main repair cases.
If you are watching this in 2019 I think it's an easy choice to go with the Plus due to it being a $30 price difference. You can find the Pro+ version everywhere for $249
Hi, I was wondering... I am using the Nikon D5100 camera, but video's just aren't sharp enough! What camera would you guys advise for product video's In lower light as well!
I been thinking about getting the rode video mic pro seeing this video with the pro and plus the audio sound about the same but the plus does have unique features with a longer battery life and attachable mic cord and etc definitely a good investment also.
I got the pro (original) based on Sean's recommendation. I use it for all my videos and i love it. You'll definitely be happy with the sound. But if youre going to spend the money, get the new one. It looks like they fixed all the little issues, like the bad battery cover. And that auto off feature would probably be a life saver!
Dear Sean, thanks very much for your review about mics. However, you forgot to add that the mic jack on the Pro + sticks right into your eye if you try to check the view finder. I think it is a big design failure from Rode (it would have been so easy to place the cable inlet on the side or enable the the mic to be placed a little further to the front). What do you think?
I agree, the sound quality is just about the same. It’s the features of the pro plus that are the selling point, especially the auto on/off! I have the video micro because it was bundled with my G7 but as soon as I can afford it I will be upgrading to the pro plus. Great info as always 👊💯
what about this white noise in recorded audio? i don't listen it on your video, but it is in my records. pls tell me what you're doing to not get this sshhhhh in back
I have olympus omd and i don't see there any option about gain. I have something called volume limiter and it's ON. Can you listen to this noise in background pls ?
Yes I have a question I’m starting a Q and A vlog with guest sitting beside one another. My cam will be about 10 feet back. Now the question what would be the best mic setup shotgun, lapel, condenser? They will be facing one another, not the cam if that helps.
Quick question...I'm prepared to purchase the pro plus but just wondering if there is any news circulating that Rode is preparing to release a new upgraded version anytime soon? Don't want to invest if there is a new release around the corner.
I think I prefer the sound from the Pro... Although I'm looking at getting the Pro+ just for future proofing more than anything. Just wish it wasn't as bulky looking....
Hope you can help. I purchased the canon XA40. I love it. I was going to buy the rode video mic pro. Or should I say have bought. Is it best to use the 3.5mm jack or plug it into the XLR socket in the canon. Thanks
Been using this mic now for a few vlogs and its auto on/off is a godsendddddd
I very recently purchased the Pro Plus and I love it!!! The auto on off feature is just great and the battery lasts ages once charged. Kirsty Kirby agree - such a great mic!
Don’t you hate that when you keep forgetting to turn your mic on? It happens to be quiet a bit. Lol I need the pro plus for sure 😂
Great tip, what did you use for your boom pole + RHODE mic setup? I also love my 80D as well.
At $300, expensive. Alternative? Buy a used Pro used. Half price or better. Sound quality is rhe same.
I don't hear any difference. But the new features especially the battery are great
Toby Horn agree!
Agree!
agreed
Think Media hey do you think the VMP+ can be used professionally?
Thanks Sean! I'll hold onto my old Rode.
You're welcome Eric - keep crushing it!
I’m still using my Videomicro that you suggested many moons ago. I just can’t justify the upgrade. It’s probably the best $50 I’ve spent on gear for my channel.
FatheringAutism eh. Trust me. Pros can tell, maybe no difference to you or your friends. But, you can definitely tell. Haha
Alex Rudd Music I didn’t say I couldn’t tell, I said I couldn’t justify. I’ve used on board mics of my G7X for awhile on my channel and never gotten a complaint about the autofocus noise. I bought already, soo excited to use it
Hi Sean, I just started to do videos in Arabic language, and I have been Following your tips. I bought the rode pro last week and it looks great. I will keep crushing it😃😃. Thank you
I really want the PLUS! The amount of footage I’ve lost for Vlogs because the mic wasn’t on is a joke. Thanks for the review!
I really didn't hear a difference. Thank you for providing examples of both!
This man is like my youtube dad! I come to him ONLY when i have questions.
haha agreed ! Same here haha
At least you have a dad...
hahhahah same here
Love how Sean has come such a long way since this video, but the video itself is still amazingly useful 😎
I’ve been using the videomic go for over a year & I think it’s time for the pro plus. The go has been giving me a lot of hissing and crackling sounds as of late!
We bought the Rode Videomic Pro+ because of your other video about it :) we love it.
Just ordered the Pro Plus based on your recommendation. Can't wait! Thanks so much for reviewing it! :)
I currently use the Pro, but I've had to send it in to get repaired due to shorting out, so I feel like I would benefit from upgrading to the plus. THANK YOU SO MUCH for all of your great videos and content!!! Anytime I need reviews on anything tech I come to YOU and I always leave with my mind clear about the products and what I need to buy for myself. THANK YOU!

in June 2021 This video helped me to choose Rode Pro over the Plus. Thanks Sean.
انت مبدع فعلاً، لقد شرحت كل شيئ في اقل من تسع دقائق، من يستطيع فعل ذلك، انت مذهل أحسنت
Great extra features. The side by side sounded identical in audio quality
Rode is killing it
I have a RODE VideoMic Pro and am really happy with it. Biggest lesson learned was getting a wide angle lens that allows me to stand close to it. Within 2-5 feet max. Remember your video on the Tokina 11-16 F 2.8? I picked one up! Appreciate the tips.
Nice - solid set up!
just i wanna say thank you so much, most of my stuff i bought them after your review like the camera sony a6400 ,Sigma 16mm, tripod joby pro
After many days of waiting got this type of video...Thanks😊😊😊
@7:00 body language head-shake is saying no, verbal is saying yes!
.... hmm I would listen to the subconscious and say no, go with the Original, save some money 😀
Teo G Poker Vlog actually that was a uncontrollable head shake caused by aliens and an affiliation with the illuminati.
Good catch. 🤣
looks to me like "kind of worth it depending on the person" :)
hahaahaha
Good catch!
That shake of the head was more like "it's a no brainer". Nobody would nod their head in that situation. Reading body language is pretty much bullshit.
Always deliver 👌🏾. Thank you Sean. You rock 👌🏾👏🏾. Keep it up ...
Great video and overview. I just bought the + in 2022. I'm expecting to use it frequently.
i love this man energy that i why i watch him even if i dont like his topic
I'm moving up from iPhone 7+ and Garmin Virb to a G85 and the Rode plus mic. We really appreciate your excellent videos. I do travel videos from my motorcycle. Hello, Think media team...overtime using both of these mics....which would is better in all categories and would prefer to use?
Im going to be opting for the pro + thanks for sharing the video
Just bought it, can't wait to check it out
You always give the best reviews, thanks for all the info!!
You're welcome!
I'll stick with the video mic pro for now. Glad you shared the difference between the two mics Sean.
Love your tech videos!!! Keep doing these; they're great!!
Brandon Rivera thanks for the feedback!
Think Media Thanks for the vids!!!! 😃
5:36 Tests start. Great review btw!
Hi Sean,
I have bought my first ever DSLR, Canon 1300D.
Bought the plus because of this video. Thanks bro!!
Great video, man! Thanks for sharing this!
That auto off feature is awesome!
Brandon Rivera I️ agree!
I REALLY DIG THIS, THANK YOU..
This mic is good to recordar at live band concerts??? And is ok to use with full hd sony camera recorder????
About as good as a review as you will find! Right to the point. All I needed to know. Didn't have either one, so I picked up the Pro Plus. Thanks.
I have the Rode Videomic Go I love it
Thanks for the video I really learned something the buttons
I think I'm going to buy this mic mainly because of the auto on/off feature
Ethan Bares yes - game changing feature for sure!
I like the features of the plus version and will likely be buying that one instead.
I like the video... I watched the whole video... I don't even need a rode mic right now. Must be a good video.
Great review and well presented. I think you convinced me to go pro plus!
i think it is worth it. I am a woman and I do not like hassle so the quality is worth it for the new features, especially the battery life and versatility.
They sound the same but I purchased the Pro Plus because of the battery and the cable.. Thanks again.
Great comparison! You sold me on so much and made this decision clear. Thanks man

Thanks Sean. 👍 This video helped me with my decision on what mic to purchase. (Even 4 years after this video was made! 🙂)
Good review there mate :-)

You need a Cold Shoe Extension Bar Bracket. Buy on Amazon for not much.

This was so helpful, definitely getting the Pro + now! Can't wait to be rid of the atrocious audio of my first few videos 😂
I have the Video Mic Go, worth for the Pro+? Maybe won't upgrade soon, but maybe in the future yes.
Shimmer definitely is much superior.. if I was you I will sell it and update my microphone
Looking to upgrade from my current RODE Video Mic ME. Thanks for the comparison of the RODE PRO and RODE PRO+
thanks for sharing. got an idea what is best for my cam.
Awesome - happy to help - keep crushing it J!
I will :) continue sharing.
I love this it's very informative. I'm looking t buy a RODE mic for my Canon SL2. Which by the way you helped me find the right camera for me!!! I loved your video on volgging cameras it was really helpful and informative.
Its basically the only camera shotgun mic in the world with a rechargeable battery. For that reason alone I'd say its no contest
Great video! Subbed and liked. It really helped me to decide!
Another fantastic review, do you have courses on your site?
HIIT STEP yes! Www.Courses.seancannell.com
Also checkout www.TubeMasterclass.com 👊🏼💯
awesome cheers dude :)
Thanks for the advice also i think the plus is a little bit better

I bought a used one for $150, check your local marketplaces!
Hi, I was wondering... I am using the Nikon D5100 camera, but video's just aren't sharp enough! What camera would you guys advise for product video's In lower light as well!
My original videomic pro shock mount broke. Any place I can get a new one?
TerrelLism try to contact rode

always great video, surprisingly very low likes and dislikes
I own the Mic pro using 80d and it's great :) thanks for comparison
You're welcome!
Love your channel
thx!
was it just me or did the test outside test on the newer one have more air noise?
Omar and I felt like they sounded nearly identical ... the Pro+ sounded slightly louder (with the +20 setting turned on).
Nice! But I'd go with the lower priced version.
May i know why aside from being cheaper?
Dear Sean, thanks very much for your review about mics.
However, you forgot to add that the mic jack on the Pro + sticks right into your eye if you try to check the view finder. I think it is a big design failure from Rode (it would have been so easy to place the cable inlet on the side or enable the the mic to be placed a little further to the front). What do you think?
Would like to see a video on the pro plus vs the Sennheiser mke 400
I bought the Plus. The Auto on/off function didn't work correctly. Rode's customer service took forever to get back to me, so I returned it.
I agree, the sound quality is just about the same. It’s the features of the pro plus that are the selling point, especially the auto on/off! I have the video micro because it was bundled with my G7 but as soon as I can afford it I will be upgrading to the pro plus. Great info as always 👊💯
what about this white noise in recorded audio? i don't listen it on your video, but it is in my records. pls tell me what you're doing to not get this sshhhhh in back
Naucz się grać do you have your automatic gain control turned off in your camera?
I have olympus omd and i don't see there any option about gain. I have something called volume limiter and it's ON. Can you listen to this noise in background pls ?

Yes I have a question I’m starting a Q and A vlog with guest sitting beside one another. My cam will be about 10 feet back. Now the question what would be the best mic setup shotgun, lapel, condenser? They will be facing one another, not the cam if that helps.
I would like to see a new test with new Shotgun mics for iPhone =)
SIR_Pierre I shot with my Samsung note 8.. works really well
The original is bit louder and crispy as well, but Pro plus. Is lower but crispy and smooth .
No Bg noise. Nice.
Quick question...I'm prepared to purchase the pro plus but just wondering if there is any news circulating that Rode is preparing to release a new upgraded version anytime soon? Don't want to invest if there is a new release around the corner.
The last product they released was the VideoMic NTG, it goes with USB C to connect to a computer etc ... I am also doubtful if there is a new product.
Sounds very similar but I like the fact that the pro plus has a detachable cable.
Thanks
